ECB finalises process for Hundred private investment

The ECB’s leadership believe that private investment will take the Hundred “to the next level” and turn it into the world’s second-biggest franchise league after the IPL. The board has confirmed its financial advisors and legal counsel for the sale process, which it aims to complete by the end of this year ahead of a revamped competition in 2025.Earlier this month, the counties signalled their approval on the ECB’s proposed “direction of travel”. They all stand to benefit financially from the sale of stakes in the eight Hundred teams – who are all owned by the ECB – to private investors, which is likely to include IPL owners and private equity firms. There has been extensive discussions over the proposed model but there is now broad agreement over the mechanism by which the proceeds would be split. Initially, the ECB will hand 51% of the shares in the eight teams to the host counties (MCC in London Spirit’s case) for free. They will then decide whether to keep all, some, or none of their respective stakes.Related

The ECB will then sell its 49% stake, with 10% given to the recreational game in England and Wales and the rest shared by the counties. The first £275 million would be shared 19 ways (between the 18 first-class counties and MCC). The next £150 million would then be shared between the 11 non-hosts only, and any proceeds beyond £425 million would be shared 19 ways again.Vikram Banerjee, the ECB’s director of business operations, has led the process. He said in an ECB press release – the first public communication by the board on the privatisation of the Hundred – that it would “unlock the future potential” of the Hundred while supporting the rest of the sport financially.”We have identified this moment as the opportunity to take the Hundred to the next level while capitalising on the global interest in the competition to underpin the structure of the whole domestic game,” Banerjee said. “The opportunity to engage new global strategic partners will help us unlock the future potential of the Hundred.”We will be looking to engage the very best in world sport to grow the Hundred into a competition which can benefit the whole of cricket for years to come. With proceeds from any investment going direct to the recreational and the county game, it will support the other parts of cricket which are so cherished by fans and players alike and play an important role in identifying and developing talent.”The ECB said that the Hundred will play “a vital role in the future of our sport” and that counties have been supportive of their plans. “The ambition is to seek partners with the expertise to help take the competition to the next level, while ensuring any investment benefits the whole of the game,” the board said.”The ECB will continue working closely and collaboratively with its members through the process, including finalising how proceeds will be distributed among the first-class counties, MCC and the recreational game.”The Raine Group, which worked on the recent sales processes at Premier League football clubs Chelsea and Manchester United, will be the lead advisor and has been tasked with sourcing partners and negotiating the terms of investment. Deloitte, one of the “big four” accounting firms, will provide strategic advice, while Latham & Watkins and Onside Law will act as legal co-counsel.The Hundred will run from July 23 until August 18 this year, and the ECB hopes to use this season as a shop window for prospective investors. The first six days of the season will clash with Major League Cricket, which could cause as many as half of the men’s overseas players to arrive late.

Head, Abhishek and Bhuvneshwar star as SRH smash LSG and knock out MI

Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the stifling of LSG’s batters, before Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma blew away their bowlers

Sidharth Monga08-May-20242:24

Deep Dasgupta: Quite a statement from SRH

Sunrisers Hyderabad obliterated Lucknow Super Giants, first stifling them with the new ball and then sensationally chasing down 166 in just 9.4 overs – the highest 10-over score in any T20. The massive win lifted them to No. 3 on the points table with 14 points in 12 matches, and also gave them a much-needed net-run-rate boost. The chase was so brutal that LSG didn’t even bother with their Impact Player.A lot will rightly be spoken of the explosive batting of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, who got to their fifties in 16 and 19 balls respectively, putting on a hundred between them inside the powerplay for the second time this IPL, both times the highest powerplay scores in all T20 cricket.Related

'I'm lost for words' – The Travishek show leaves LSG stunned

Mumbai Indians knocked out after SRH demolish LSG

However, it was with the ball that SRH set up the win. Bhuvneshwar Kumar led the way with figures of 4-0-12-2, conceding only singles, completely shutting down the LSG top order, which scored just 66 in the first 11.2 overs. That the top order had not been enterprising enough was underscored by the unbroken 99-run stand off 52 balls between Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran, which eventually proved to be hopelessly inadequate.Mumbai Indians were collateral damage on the night, knocked out of contention for the playoffs by this result, the first team at IPL 2024 to be officially out.Bhuvneshwar gets stuck inA word about the fear surrounding the SRH batters first. It was that fear which, in part, prompted LSG to bat first. And then they ran into Bhuvneshwar, who was unerring in his length and drew movement off the pitch. Quinton de Kock – 66 off 66 off Bhuvneshwar in T20 cricket overall – managed just 1 off 4 off him, those four balls inclusive of a near-dismissal and his wicket, caught superbly by Nitish Reddy at deep-square leg.Bhuvneshwar Kumar nailed his match-up against Quinton de Kock•AFP/Getty ImagesIt was a sensational catch made to look easy as Reddy took it over his head, threw it back in the field of play, stepped out and came back to complete the catch, but Sanvir Singh soon outdid him with a low catch diving forward at mid-on to send back Marcus Stoinis. Bhuvneshwar ended the powerplay with 3-0-7-2. Add Shahbaz Ahmed’s 2-0-9-0 to that, and LSG had had their worst powerplay of the year: 27 for 2.IPL debutant, the Sri Lanka legspinner V Viyaskanth, kept the lid on after the powerplay only for Krunal Pandya to inject some momentum into the innings by hitting Jaydev Unadkat for successive sixes, the tournament’s 999th and 1000th. The first one was an extraordinary straight hook to a head-high slower bouncer over long-on. Little did we know the shot would become a mere footnote by the time the night was done.Badoni, Pooran rescue LSGKL Rahul, 29 off 33, perished trying to hit the pace of Pat Cummins, and Krunal was run out by the SRH captain and birthday boy as he tried to steal a single when the boundaries were not coming. It had taken 9.1 overs for the first four of the innings, but Badoni and Pooran found the boundary regularly. Badoni led the charge by moving around in the crease and manipulating the field, getting to a fifty in 28 balls. Pooran joined in towards the end, using the pace of T Natarajan and Cummins. Two of the quickest bowlers on display, Cummins and Natarajan, went for 97 between them.Ayush Badoni gave LSG a much-needed lift•BCCIHead, Abhishek deliver the knockout punchLSG tried to make use of the slow pitch by bowling K Gowtham’s offspin to the two left-hand openers, which was a sound-enough plan. With Head and Abhishek, though, plans hardly seem to matter. Head pulled Gowtham away for four in the first over, and Abhishek took down Yash Thakur in the second. Again, even Thakur seemed to be bowling to a sound plan: sweeper cover and deep-square leg, bowl into the pitch, but Abhishek pulled him in front of square. So he put two men back on the leg side, and Abhishek made room and carved him through point. By the time they had reached 25 in two overs, plans ceased to matter at all.Head and Abhishek just picked their spots and sent the ball there no matter the pace on the ball, no matter the length, no matter the fields. All told, the ball took that journey to the boundary once every second ball. You can take your pick from among Head’s kneel-down six into the sight screen, Abhishek’s languid pick-up over wide long-on off Badoni’s offspin, or his extra-cover drive for six to end the game… But try as you may, you will struggle to find a shot more incredible than Head off-driving Ravi Bishnoi off the back foot for a huge six over long-off.Head ended up with 89 off 30, and Abhishek, 75 off 28. Gowtham’s economy of 14.50 was the best among all the LSG bowlers.

PSG tell Lucas Beraldo to stay despite centre-back wanting summer transfer as Ligue 1 side set asking price for Galatasaray target

Lucas Beraldo has told Paris Saint-Germain he wants to leave, but the Ligue 1 giants are refusing to sanction a move until strict conditions are met.

According to , PSG centre-back Beraldo has formally requested to leave the club during the ongoing transfer window. Beraldo, 21, arrived from Sao Paulo in January 2024 for €20 million (£17m/$23m) and has struggled for consistent starts, particularly after a poor showing in the Club World Cup final against Chelsea. PSG are not considering his departure unless two conditions are met: the signing of a new centre-back and a minimum €30m (£26m/$35m) transfer fee. Galatasaray are interested in signing him, while his agents have reached out to the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bournemouth to gauge interest.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Beraldo’s transfer request follows limited game time behind Marquinhos and Willian Pacho in Luis Enrique’s central defensive pecking order. Keen for regular minutes to boost his prospects ahead of the 2026 World Cup, the Brazilian has communicated his desire to the PSG hierarchy. Despite being rated for his potential, doubts over his ability to establish himself after high-profile setbacks have contributed to Beraldo pushing for a move.

DID YOU KNOW?

PSG have communicated that Beraldo will only be allowed to leave if a suitable replacement – most likely Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi is secured. PSG have set a minimum asking price of €30m for Beraldo, rejecting any notion of a cut-price deal. The club insists they will retain Beraldo if defensive reinforcements cannot be finalised, in order to maintain squad depth as Presnel Kimpembe is still recovering from injury.

With less than a month remaining in the transfer window, PSG are actively negotiating for a new centre-back before sanctioning any departure for Beraldo. Beraldo’s future will depend on PSG’s success in the market, with more offers expected in the coming weeks but with no move allowed until PSG’s high demands are met.

Eddie Howe admits Alexander Isak has 'acted poorly' amid Liverpool transfer saga as Newcastle boss warns wantaway striker he will 'have to earn the right' to return to training

Eddie Howe says Newcastle United players cannot expect to "act poorly" and then train with the team amid Alexander Isak's efforts to join Liverpool.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Isak stunned Newcastle fans when he asked for a summer exit as he tried to secure a move to Liverpool. The Swede then trained on his own at his former side Real Sociedad, rather than linking up with the Magpies for their pre-season tour in Asia. With a Liverpool switch now looking remote, manager Howe has fired a warning of sorts to the striker.

    WHAT HOWE SAID

He told The Daily Mail: "You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United. The player has a responsibility here to be part of a team and part of a squad – you have to act in the right way. So that is also at play here. We will make sure that any player does that to earn the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.

"Of course I'd like him to be (there), but whether he will I don’t know at this moment in time. We have been here with the time difference, preparing for training and for games. Other people have been dealing with that situation back at home."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Daily Mail states that Newcastle will only sell Isak on 'their terms', with the Magpies only likely to accept an offer approaching £150 million ($199m) as they try and line up a replacement. But Isak's actions so far have not made him a popular figure amongst Newcastle's fans.

Tom Prest century gives Hampshire control

Hosts pile on 503 but Durham responded positively after 146.4 overs in the field

ECB Reporters Network11-May-2024

Tom Prest flaunted his significant talent with his second Vitality County Championship hundred as Hampshire and Durham’s Division One clash turned into a run-fest.The 21-year-old expertly scored 102, to dovetail with Ali Orr’s day one century and Ben Brown’s 75th first-class fifty, to help Hampshire to 503.Alex Lees led Durham’s response on a Utilita Bowl pitch which has displayed heavy spin in patches but has mostly been fun in the sun to bat on.The opener scored 71 before departing in the penultimate over of the day, having teamed up with David Bedingham to put on a match-high 97 for the third wicket. Durham ended the day on 146 for 3, 357 in arrears.Prest furthered his reputation of being Hampshire’s most exciting homegrown batter since James Vince while showing his complete range. He had enthusiastically reached his half-century on the first evening but was forced to bedded in with Ben Brown, as the visitors bowled accurately during the morning. The pair eventually added 72 together.Prest’s overnight partner Liam Dawson was leg before in the third over of the day – having survived a caught behind appeal from Ben Raine the delivery before. The former England under 19 captain cemented his place in the Hampshire side after a century against Essex in the penultimate match of last season, before an 85 against Lancashire last month proved the ton was no fluke. He never looked in any discomfort, not offering up a single chance as he strode his side to three batting points and a 161-ball century.Prest guided to first slip two balls after reaching three figures to give Brydon Carse his first wicket of the season – having gone nought for 285 up until that point in 2024.Brown, who passed fifty in 95 balls, and Felix Organ maintained Hampshire’s progress – with a clear intention to only have to bat once, especially with rain forecast on Monday. They put on 60 before a flurry of wickets ended the innings. Brown lost control of the bat and splattered one-handed to midwicket, Organ was run out by James Fuller’s lazy running, Kyle Abbott was bowled by a Callum Parkinson ripper before Fuller – after some exciting shot-making – lost his off stump.Parkinson ended with an expensive four-for, with debutant Peter Siddle pilfering three. Hampshire reached 500 at home for the first time since 2019.Vince called for his spinners as soon as the eighth and ninth overs and was quickly rewarded with turn for Dawson and Organ – the former seeing two loud lbw appeals turned down in his first over.Organ was the first to strike when Scott Borthwick brought tea by misreading a full straight delivery to be bowled, and end a pacy 45-run stand with Lees. And then Colin Ackermann was plumb in front to Dawson.Lees batted himself out of danger of becoming a victim of the spin and variable bounce with a series of aggressive boundary shots. But the spell of peril eased and Lees slipped back down the gears to reach 50 for the second time this year in exactly 100 balls, with Bedingham keeping him company. He was adjudged leg-before to Dawson with the seventh from last ball of the day, with Hampshire the only side who could realistically win this game.

Kyle Abbott sets Hampshire record as pace-setters Surrey stumble

Fast bowler’s five-for followed by batting grind as Foakes back spasm adds to visitors’ woes

ECB Reporters Network24-May-2024

Kyle Abbott claimed a five-wicket haul•Getty Images

Kyle Abbott became Utilita Bowl’s greatest-ever wicket-taker as Hampshire showed a chink in champions Surrey’s quest for a third straight Vitality County Championship crown.Fast bowler Abbott overtook Dimi Mascarenhas’ 186 scalps at the ground as his predatory post-lunch spell of five for 25 put him on 188 home wickets since initially arriving in 2014.The South African was supplemented by Liam Dawson’s three for 21 as Surrey were rolled for 127 – although with the warning that they recovered from 15 for four to beat Worcestershire last week.To add to Surrey, and potentially England’s, woes, wicket-keeper Ben Foakes didn’t keep wicket due to a back spasm, as Hampshire ground out a glacial 102 for one.A relatively even morning session was headlined by Dawson picking off Surrey’s distinguished top-order, after the visitors had chosen to bat first on a used pitch. The left-arm spinner entered the attack in the 10th over and stuck after just four deliveries, as Dom Sibley returned a simple caught and bowled. After a missed chance to stump Rory Burns, Ollie Pope attempted to pump Dawson over long-on but mistimed to Keith Barker at mid-on to hand the all-rounder his 300th first-class wicket for Hampshire. His 301st came soon after when Burns turned to short leg, before Jamie Smith ended the morning session by having his stumps rearranged by debutant Michael Neser – the Australian coming in for Mohammed Abbas, who has returned home. The interval score of 89 for four slightly flattered the hosts, but when they returned, Abbott got his tail up and demolished the middle and lower order.Abbott became a father for the first time over the winter and also went on a fitness regime that returned him to a similar physique to the one he had as a Test bowler. The primary reason for the latter was to have the same energy and strength at the end of a long session or day with which he had started. It was really Felix Organ who got things rolling, as he snatched a wonderful diving catch at square-leg to dismiss Dan Lawrence. But from then on it was peak Abbott and his skilful bowling. He nipped in to displace Foakes’ middle stump, before another in-ducker found Jordan Clark’s outside edge for a duck. At that point, Abbott had taken three wickets without conceding a run after lunch.Abbott overtook Mascarenhas by getting a ball to lift on Sean Abbott, and then completed his 38th five-wicket haul of his career by cleaning up Gus Atkinson. All five wickets had come in a 34-ball burst.Neser rounded off the innings by pegging back Cam Steel’s off stump to end a Surrey collapse which had seen seven wickets fall for 38 runs. It was their lowest total since the last innings of last season – which came on this ground having secured the title the day before. The grey skies that had partnered Surrey’s innings were replaced by blue ones as Fletcha Middleton and Toby Albert – in for another back spasm victim Ali Orr – built a 51-run stand for the first wicket. The duo took little risk, with dot balls comprising of 85 per cent of their partnership, but were split when Middleton tickled a sweep shot behind to Smith – who had replaced Foakes behind the stumps. For Albert it was a contrast from the 51 off 33 balls and 86 off 31 balls he had scored earlier this week in T20 matches for the Second XI. In his first 100 balls he only scored 19 runs, and ended the day with a barely quicker 34 off 139 – having put on 51 with Nick Gubbins.
