Next captain after Bruno: INEOS have struck gold on Man Utd's "warrior"

For the fourth time this season, Manchester United faced off against Leicester City on Sunday evening. For the fourth time this season, the Red Devils ran out winners.

Up against a man who had actually led United against the Foxes twice earlier in the campaign, in the form of Ruud van Nistelrooy, the Old Trafford side enjoyed a rare smooth outing in the Premier League, with the hosts already looking rather resigned to their relegation fate.

Manchester United celebrate after beating Leicester

The nature of the opposition may suggest otherwise, but there were once again real signs of progress for the away side, having also hit Real Sociedad for four on Thursday night.

Spearheaded once again by midweek hat-trick hero, Bruno Fernandes, the visitors comfortably powered to a 3-0 win at the King Power Stadium, ensuring Ruben Amorim can head into the international break in positive mood – excluding the cruel injury blow to 18-year-old, Ayden Heaven.

The loss of the shining teenager was the obvious negative in a largely impressive night that saw both Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho end their respective goal droughts, although it was that man Fernandes who was – again – the pick of the bunch.

Bruno Fernandes' form in 2025

Whether Roy Keane was aware of what he was doing or not, the Irishman’s targeting of Fernandes – after stating that “talent is enough” late last month – appears to have lit a fire under the belly of the Portuguese.

It hadn’t been vintage Fernandes in the early months of the season, yet in 2025, in particular, the 30-year-old has been simply masterful, putting in a string of ‘captain’s performances’ from his new deep-lying role.

Whether it be at Anfield in January, or at Goodison in February – where the playmaker’s stunning free-kick kickstarted a late comeback – the former Sporting CP star has repeatedly delivered the goods in 2025, cementing his status as United’s talisman even under the new Amorim regime.

Bruno Fernandes celebrates for Manchester United

Now with 31 goals and assists to his name in just 44 games in 2024/25, the experienced midfielder has particularly come alive in recent weeks, registering six goal involvements in his last four league outings, while also scoring in the FA Cup clash with Fulham – alongside his treble in the Europa League.

As for his most recent appearance, the genius talent found Hojlund with a clever dinked pass over the top, before prodding the ball into the path of Garnacho in the second half, with both men duly converting.

To emphasise his rich vein of form even further, Fernandes rounded off proceedings with a goal of his own after sweeping home from Diogo Dalot’s pullback, making it eight goals and assists in the league in 2025 to date.

United’s number eight very much remains captain fantastic, although it looks as if INEOS and United have already found the perfect successor for the future.

Man Utd already have their next captain brewing

Fernandes’ merits as a captain have long been debated since he took the armband from Harry Maguire back in the summer of 2023, yet on current form, the question remains just where this side would be without him.

Still only 30 and something of a freak with regard to staying injury-free – having missed just three games in five years at the club – the one-time Udinese man may even have one eye on leading the club into their new stadium, amid the INEOS-led goal after making that transition ahead of the 2030/31 campaign.

That said, should the midfield maestro – who has just two years left to run on his current deal – opt to move on in the near future, the club may have found the perfect replacement as skipper, in the form of Matthijs de Ligt.

Signed from Bayern Munich over the summer on an initial £38.4m deal, the towering Dutchman endured a rocky start to life at Old Trafford, having notably been ripped apart by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher amid his shaky display against Tottenham Hotspur back in September.

To his credit, the former Ajax man has shaken off such moments, including his mad five minutes at Anfield in which he gave away a penalty and allowed Cody Gakpo to cut inside, to emerge as a real leader and “warrior” in Amorim’s ranks, as hailed by the United Stand’s Beth.

There have, of course, been mistakes still in the 25-year-old’s game, including his foul on Mikel Oyarzabal in midweek, but even the best make errors. Who can forget Rio Ferdinand inexplicably scooping the ball to Craig Bellamy in that 2009 Manchester Derby.

Now operating typically on the right side of a back three, De Ligt has put in a string of commanding displays of late, having been hailed by journalist Samuel Luckhurst for enjoying his “best game” in the FA Cup against Fulham, showcasing a combination of defensive aggression and ball-playing quality.

Captain of Ajax at the age of just 18, the experienced talent was also crucial away in San Sebastian after denying Orri Oskarsson with a crucial intervention, having again thwarted Facundo Buonanotte’s strike with a vital bloke on Sunday evening.

That outing at the King Power saw the £195k-per-week titan lauded for his ‘mini-revival’ of late by Luckhurst, who awarded the defender an 8/10 match rating, with it looking as if INEOS have struck gold on a player who is now worth around £44m, as per Football Transfers.

A true, old-fashioned defender who is a threat in both boxes – having scored two league goals this season – De Ligt is now stepping up at a crucial stage of the campaign, just as captains do.

Liverpool working on hijacking Chelsea deal for "confident" £40m attacker

In a move that would see them get one over on their rivals, Liverpool are now reportedly working on hijacking Chelsea’s deal to sign an attacking reinforcement worth £40m this summer.

Liverpool plotting Chelsea hijack

After a week to forget, Liverpool’s problems have become clearer than ever under Arne Slot even as they remain on course to become dominant Premier League champions. The Dutchman watched on as his side suffered Champions League defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on penalties before they were shocked by Newcastle United at Wembley.

One common theme occurred in both defeats and that was Liverpool’s need for an attacking spark other than Mohamed Salah. When it hasn’t been the Egyptian in the last two games, the Reds have been unable to fall back on the likes of Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez – sparking serious questions over their No.9 role.

Several candidates to take hold of that role have already threatened to steal the headlines in recent weeks, with Alexander Isak’s name sitting top of that list. However, it’s not just the Swede who seemingly finds himself on Richard Hughes’ shortlist.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsak

According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are now working on a deal to sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town after establishing contact with the former Manchester City striker in an attempt to steal in ahead of Chelsea.

Delap, valued at £40m, represents a far cheaper option than the likes of Isak and a player who has continued his personal rise despite Ipswich’s Premier League struggles.

Those at Anfield will hope their status as champions-elect is enough to lure Delap into a move over Chelsea and others this summer in what would hand them a much-needed attacking improvement. There’s also every chance that any deal becomes far more feasible if Ipswich are relegated this season, as looks likely to be the case.

"Confident" Delap would be instant upgrade

Whilst Nunez, Jota and Diaz have struggled to benefit from the league’s best creator in Salah, Delap has dragged Ipswich’s attack forward at times despite often going without the rewards for doing just that. Swap roles with those aforementioned Liverpool stars and there’s every chance that the former Man City man would not leave chances to waste on stages such as Wembley and a shot at silverware.

The only striker of the three to outperform on expected goals in the Premier League this season, it’s clear that Delap is performing in the area that Jota and Nunez have so far failed in the current campaign.

Earning plenty of praise as a result, Alan Shearer said when asked about Delap in January: “He held the ball up, he ran in behind and when his team were under pressure he won free-kicks to ease that pressure. He was a nuisance to play against. I loved his aggression right from the off.

“He has got eight goals this season and Ipswich have only scored 20 themselves. That tells you how impressive he has been. You’ve got a really confident, young footballer who is only going to get better.”

Accoridng to Sky Sports, the 22-year-old will earn a base salary of £195,000 a week. That could rise to more than £245,000 based on individual and team bonuses, representing a potential annual pay packet of almost £13m. Wirtz completed his switch to Merseyside earlier this week for an initial fee of £100m, which could rise to £116m should Wirtz play a key role in Liverpool winning the Premier League and Champions League.

The deal makes Wirtz the third highest paid player at Liverpool, but he still lags far behind numbers one and two. Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah's contracts were a constant story during the 2024/25 season, with both stars signing a new deal in the run-in of the Reds' title-winning campaign. Agarwal and Vihari star in thrilling chase as South join West in Duleep Trophy final

What was smooth sailing for most of the journey turned into a rocky ride towards the end, as South Zone, in pursuit of 215 against North Zone, slipped from 191 for 4 to 213 for 8 in their run chase. Eventually though, Sai Kishore kept his calm and deposited the opposition captain Jayant Yadav over long-on to steer South to a two-wicket win, and with it, a place in the Duleep Trophy final. South hunted down their target at better than a run a ball in Bengaluru, where there were two lengthy rain delays on the fourth and final day.The South batters kept playing their shots despite wickets falling in a hurry, with the finish line nearing, after the experienced Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari laid the foundations for their victory, which Ricky Bhui and Tilak Varma built upon with an aggressive partnership for the fifth wicket.Heading into day four, South needed another 194 to win with all ten wickets in hand, and the free-stroking Agarwal dominated his opening stand off 44 with Sai Sudharsan. Vaibhav Arora then removed Sudharsan and R Samarth in quick succession to leave South 59 for 2. That brought their captain Vihari to the crease, and with dark clouds overhead and rain in the air, he got into counterattack mode alongside Agarwal. They doubled the score in quick time, adding 59 off 47 balls while driving and punching boundaries at will. That forced North into defensive fields, but Jayant got rid of Agarwal for 54 to give North Zone a glimmer of hope. Vihari kept motoring at the other end, however, and even after he was dismissed for 43 by Harshit Rana, South were only 74 away with six wickets standing.Bhui and Varma then added 50 off just 33 deliveries, before Bhui’s wicket for 34 opened the floodgates, with Rana and Baltej Singh striking twice each in the space of 3.4 overs. In the end, South just scraped through, with defending champions West Zone waiting for them in a replay of the last Duleep Trophy final.File photo – Rinku Singh lit up a drab final day in Alur with a 30-ball 40•CAB

West Zone 220 (Sheth 74, Mavi 4-43) and 297 (Pujara 133, Suryakumar 52, Jain 4-56, Saurabh 4-84) drew with Central Zone 128 (Rinku 48, Nagwaswalla 5-74) and 128 for 4 (Rinku 40, Dodiya 1-16)Defending champions West Zone qualified for the final of the 2023 Duleep Trophy on the basis of the first-innings lead after persistent rain in Alur forced their semi-final against Central Zone to end in a tame draw. West will face South Zone for the title clash, starting on July 12 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.Resuming the day on 292 for 9, West’s last pair could add only five runs before Saransh Jain dismissed Yuvrajsinh Dodiya in the second over of the morning.Central never threatened to chase down 390. They lost their openers, Himanshu Mantri and Vivek Singh, for single-digit scores. Dhruv Jurel and Amandeep Khare took them past 50 before Dharmendrasinh Jadeja had the former stumped for 25.Rinku Singh took the attacking route and hit three fours and as many sixes to take Central past 100 at lunch. But Dodiya ended his innings on 40 off 30 balls with the first delivery after the interval.Rain, though, allowed only six overs in the second session, forcing both captains to shake hands around 2.20pm local time.

E digo improvável pois o impossível é palavra inexistente no dicionário do futebol.

E usar a base?

Liam Dawson: 'You still get nervous watching the 2022 final'

Allrounder a key influence as county seeks to become first back-to-back Blast champions

Whatever transpires at Finals Day this year – and let’s face it, the weather doesn’t exactly look conducive to high drama – it’s hard to imagine a more chaotic, breathless finish than Hampshire conjured up in winning their third T20 Blast title at Edgbaston last year.”It was really weird,” Liam Dawson says. “Even watching it back now sometimes, you still get nervous. You think, ‘What the hell happened there?'”What happened was this: After a nip-and-tuck pursuit of a target of 153, Lancashire reached the final ball of the tournament needing four more runs to win. Nathan Ellis had already done brilliantly to concede just seven from his first five balls of the over, and as he ran in to bowl at the recently-arrived Richard Gleeson, he duly pegged back his off stump with a perfectly executed slower ball.Cue utter bedlam from the Hampshire players and fans. The stumps were out of the ground, the fireworks were unleashed all around the stadium, the sub fielders were pouring onto the pitch to join in the celebrations. For a full 25 seconds, it was glory in excelsis. But then, umpire Graeme Lloyd got word through his earpiece that Ellis had overstepped. And as he stuck out his right arm – and waved them back into position with his left – Hampshire were obliged to reset and reload, but this time with just two runs left to defend.Ellis’s response was exemplary. He banished any mounting angst, and trusted his best ball to serve him and his team well. Another slower ball, just back of a length, hopped over the stumps as Gleeson swung across the line to no avail, and though they scampered a bye, there was no chance of turning for the all-important second. This time the celebrations could be for real.”It was a really incredible game of cricket, probably something that will never happen in a final again,” Dawson says. “To think that we’d won it, and the celebration, and then to hear on the tannoy that it was a no-ball. After the comedown from that and the disappointment, then you start thinking, ‘Oh, no, is it going to be? Are we going to win it? Have we messed it up?'”Vincey was very good,” he adds, recalling James Vince’s calming influence as captain. “It was all about understanding the situation, how many they needed to win, and staying as calm as we could to try and execute under pressure.”And thankfully Nellie [Ellis] did that. It was a good slower ball that he bowled, and then to actually win it and get over the line, all those feelings and emotions came back again. It was a really, really weird experience, but also fun because we got over the line in the end.”Getting over the line had been something of an issue for Hampshire in recent Finals Days. Though that third title drew them level with Leicestershire as the most successful county in T20 history, it also came after a run of five semi-final losses in the ten years since they had last lifted the trophy in 2012.Nathan Ellis held his nerve to secure the T20 Blast title in 2022•Getty Images

And as one of Hampshire’s most senior pros, Dawson has been involved in most of those contests – seven semi-finals and two finals since 2011, not to mention their only other knock-out appearance in the 2009 quarter-finals against Northamptonshire.”It’s a fantastic day as a player to be involved in,” he says. “But also, one of the best days for a supporter coming to the ground. You get three games of cricket, you get four good teams and it’s always a brilliant atmosphere which, as the day goes on, gets better and better.”Assuming the weather holds, Hampshire will contest the first semi-final against Essex, a team that they bested twice in the group stages, with Dawson himself playing a key role in both. At Chelmsford in June, he cracked 19 from 5 balls then followed up with 4 for 21 in a thumping 118-run win, and though it was a tighter affair at the Ageas Bowl three weeks later, Dawson’s first-ball six in the penultimate over all but sealed a stiff 210-run chase. Those results, however, will count for nothing come Saturday. “It’s completely irrelevant that we’ve beaten them in the group stage,” Dawson says. “It means absolutely nothing. It’s a knockout game and anybody can beat anyone. It’s all about trying to play well on the day and trying to play well as a group. And if we do that, hopefully we get on the right side of the result.”He sees no particular advantage in contesting the first semi-final either – for, as he notes, each of the two finals that he’s won with Hampshire have come from a short turn-around after winning match two.”I don’t really know what to expect there,” he says. “I remember last year it was it was quite rushed actually, in between the second semi final and the final, so it wasn’t ideal preparation. But hopefully, if we can get over the line, it’d be a nice little break before the final. But as I said, there’s a hell of a lot of work to do before that. Essex are very good team.”We’ll be trying our best [to defend the title],” he adds. “There’s four really strong teams here on the day and anybody can win it. Surrey are extremely dangerous, as are Somerset, they got some players that can hurt you and take the game away from you. But hopefully, we can get a good day’s cricket in and the weather can look after everyone.”The forecast, unfortunately, could hardly be less accommodating. But while the prospect of a bowl-out for the title hangs in the rain, Dawson concedes that’s not something Hampshire are overly concerned about at this stage.”I have no idea, we’ve not even spoken about it,” he says, when asked who would be their five-man attack for such an eventuality. “If it happens, it’s like a penalty shoot-out, isn’t it? Complete luck on the day. Yeah, we’d try and win it, but any team can win that way. It’s complete luck and let’s hope it doesn’t get to that.”Related

Historic Dawson feat leads Hampshire to crushing win over Middlesex

Either way, Dawson is geared up for Finals Day being one of his indisputable highlights of the season. And given his allround form across formats, he is sure to be one of Hampshire’s key players as they look to become the first team in English T20 history to successfully defend their title.”At the minute it’s going well, but I’ve played long enough now to understand the ups and downs of the game,” he says. “I didn’t have a great start to the summer but recently it’s gone well, and I’ve got to try and keep that form up and stay hungry to do well. Because cricket is a hard game, so I’m not taking anything for granted.”He’s not dwelling on what might have been on the England front either. When Jack Leach succumbed to a stress fracture prior to the Ashes, Dawson’s name was one of the most prominent in the frame – and though Moeen Ali was recalled for the first Test at Edgbaston, Dawson’s response in his next Championship outing was a remarkable double of 12 wickets and a century in Hampshire’s innings victory over Middlesex in June. But, he says, he was not remotely put out by his omission from England’s plans, having played his most recent Test against South Africa in 2017.”No, doesn’t bother me at all,” he says. “I’ve said this to a number of people now, I’ve not expected to play Test cricket for a number of years now. It’s not been on my radar. If it happens, brilliant. If it doesn’t, I’m not fussed at all.”I’m enjoying playing my cricket, and that’s all I can do. I’m not getting any younger now. I’m 33 and worrying about playing for England is something that I’ve done way too much in the past, and it’s something that is not healthy to do. So if it happens great. If not, then I certainly won’t lose any sleep over it.”

Former Arsenal and Real Madrid midfielder Ozil has clarified his role in the surprise transfer of his Schalke youth academy counterpart Sane from Bayern to Galatasaray. WHAT MESUT OZIL SAID

Ozil confirmed that he and Sane spoke before the transfer, but insisted it was merely a friendly discussion about life in Turkey, not an attempt to influence the winger's decision. Speaking to local media, he shared his reaction to the move and addressed the rumours: “Big names are coming to Turkey. They are playing football here. Hopefully, our big clubs will also be successful in Europe.”

Ozil expressed his happiness at seeing Sane arrive in the Super Lig, pointing out their shared roots: “I am very happy that Sane has come to Turkey. He is someone who, like me, has come from the Schalke youth academy.”

Responding directly to claims that he advised Sane to choose Galatasaray, former Madrid star was clear: “We talked before I came to Turkey, but it's not like I directed him to Galatasaray as written in the media… He asked about life in Turkey and Istanbul, we talked about these things. I said it was a very beautiful city and a safe city.”

He added: "I said we have incredible food. I said we would be very happy if you came, and he came. We wish him success, too."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sane’s move marks a great coup for Gala as they aim to bolster their squad with international pedigree. Coming off a stint at Bayern Munich and with his contract expiring, the German international opted for a fresh start in the Super Lig. The presence of other big-name players and the growing ambition of Turkish clubs likely influenced his decision.
