The Men’s IPL, meanwhile, is likely to begin on April 1
Nagraj Gollapudi09-Dec-2022IPL 2023 is likely to begin on April 1, while the inaugural season of the Women’s IPL is likely to be played from March 3 to 26 with both tournaments to be played in India. While the BCCI is yet to formalise the dates, it has earmarked a window for the WIPL with the tournament set to start a week after the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup final, which is scheduled to be played on February 26 in Cape Town.As for the IPL, ESPNcricinfo has learned that the BCCI is working out the availability of overseas players before it finalises the end date for the 10-team tournament, which will return to the home-and-away format that was shelved due to constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It is likely that the BCCI would want to wrap up the IPL by the end of May since England are scheduled to play Ireland in a one-off Test at Lord’s from June 1 to 4. A few days later, The Oval will host the second ICC World Test Championship final – which India have a chance of contesting – while the Ashes begin from June 16.Related

BCCI set to launch five-team women's IPL in March 2023
On Friday the BCCI announced the media-rights tender for the first five seasons of the WIPL, 2023 to 2027. While the last date for picking up the tender is December 31, 2022, it is learned that the bids will be opened around January 8. The BCCI has decided to adopt the closed-bid process instead of an e-auction. While further details will emerge once the bidders pick up the tender document it is learned the BCCI has not set any base price for each of the three categories for which rights will be sold: television, digital, and a combination of the two.In October this year the BCCI shared with its members – the state associations – a plan for the WIPL, which was ratified at the board’s Annual General Meeting.According to the plan, the league will be contested by five franchise teams playing a total of 22 matches. Each squad can have up to 18 players, with a maximum of six overseas players, and each playing XI can include five overseas players (four from Full Member countries and one from an Associate nation). In the league phase of the WIPL, each team will play the other twice (a total of 20 matches), and the table topper will progress straight to the final. The teams that finish second and third in the league will play an Eliminator to determine the second finalist.According to the BCCI’s timelines, the next step would be inviting bids for the five franchises. Unlike the men’s IPL, where franchises bid for teams in a particular city, the BCCI had drafted two initial plans for the WIPL. The first one was to sell teams across six zones spanning the country. A set of cities in each zone has been shortlisted and comprises: Dharamsala/Jammu (North zone), Pune/Rajkot (West), Indore/Nagpur/Raipur (Central), Ranchi/Cuttack (East), Kochi/Visakhapatnam (South) and Guwahati (North-East).The second plan involves teams being sold but without a solid home base, with matches to be played at six shortlisted IPL venues: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. The final leg of the process involves the assembling of squads and the BCCI is yet to finalise whether this will be done via an auction or a draft. Player availability will remain a concern considering the WIPL could clash with the inaugural season of the Women’s Pakistan Super League (WPSL). While the PCB is yet to release a final plan for the tournament, March 18 has been earmarked as the date of the WPSL final.

WHAT HAPPENED?
According to Marca, negotiations over a new deal were put on hold following Al-Nassr's 3-2 Saudi Pro League loss to Al-Ittihad in midweek, mere days after their AFC Champions League semi-final exit to Kawasaki Frontale. The report states Ronaldo was expecting to sign a two-year extension but these poor results have given the 40-year-old pause for thought.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Ronaldo has been the face of the Saudi Pro League since he signed for Al-Nassr from Manchester United in early 2023 but his team's failure to win a trophy yet again could make the Portugal international rethink his future. The report adds that Ronaldo's frustration at the situation has left Al-Nassr pondering their options over a renewal, with a switch to another Saudi side not ruled out.

Arsenal forced to wait for new striker after January transfer window ends
Manager Mikel Arteta saw his side fall short in a late £40 million January bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins (David Ornstein), and they were linked with a plethora of other high-profile centre-forwards throughout the winter transfer window.

Gabriel Martinelli has been ruled out for over a month after suffering a hamstring strain, with the Brazilian joining Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus on the treatment table and leaving Arteta even more bereft of quality forwards ahead of crucial Premier League fixtures.
These injury blows highlight the need for Arsenal to bring in more attacking quality this summer, as they hope to mount another challenge for domestic glory next season in the event they cannot catch Liverpool in this year’s title race.
Arsenal tipped to sign Tottenham legend Harry Kane
Some reports suggest that Arsenal are already laying the groundwork on a summer move for Benjamin Sesko, while Newcastle United star Alexander Isak is Arteta’s dream striker target.
However, Merson has now suggested a far more left-field name – Tottenham legend and Bayern Munich superstar Harry Kane. The 31-year-old has been flying ever since making the move to Germany, recently becoming the quickest player to reach 50 Bundesliga goals and smashing Erling Haaland’s record in the process.
England’s all-time top goalscorer also boasts 72 goals in 73 appearances for Bayern across all competitions, with reliable media sources reporting that Kane’s contract will include a £64 million release clause active from next January.
Merson is convinced that Arsenal could look to trigger Kane’s release clause, making a Sol Campbell comparison and stating he wouldn’t be surprised if the Spurs icon did end up on the other side of north London.
“Arsenal will buy him,” said Merson on Sky. “Why not? £64m, why not. Sol Campbell did [make the move]. People will go ‘oh he’s this age and that age’ but Arsenal need now.
“If Arsenal haven’t won the League, you’ve got to take a chance. You’ve got to take a chance, buy someone that’s proven. I wouldn’t be surprised, and when you’re Harry Kane, and you’ve been told you can go for £64m, there’s only a couple of teams who could buy him.
“Maybe Tottenham will buy him back, but he’ll have to win something at Bayern Munich to go back to Tottenham. If you’ve not won anything at Bayern Munich, you’re not going back to Tottenham to win nothing.”
Arne Slot is looking to make it a trophy-filled debut campaign at the Liverpool helm, but he’s not going to want to stop there.
The Dutchman inherited a top-class squad from Jurgen Klopp but has refined and polished the players to a standard that has seen them stretch 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League, also looking to wade deep into the Champions League knockout stage.
But this Merseyside outfit wants enduring success at the apex of the game. And to achieve that, FSG will need to invest this summer.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
But they will also need to trim the fat.
How FSG can save money this summer
Cost-cutters? FSG?
In fairness, with Darwin Nunez slated for a summer exit, Liverpool are going to need to invest big on a centre-forward. Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak is right at the top of the wishlist, but with a £150m price tag, you can see the kind of financial obstacles sporting director Richard Hughes might encounter.
There is soon-contractless Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk will sign new lucrative deals at Anfield, Trent Alexander-Arnold too – however, with Real Madrid desperate for his signature, the Scouser’s future is more nebulous.
Salah, who has scored 30 goals and supplied 22 assists across all competitions this season, is irreplaceable and must stay on the books. He turns 33 this summer but plays with preternatural athleticism, and would be a major player for several years to come.
But still, support is needed. Luckily, Liverpool have the perfect understudy in 19-year-old Ben Doak, who has enjoyed a successful loan in the Championship with Middlesbrough this term.
Doak is powerful, pacy and potent, with former Scotland manager Craig Levein even claiming: “this kid could be a world-class player.”
With such an exciting talent bursting onto the Anfield scene, it’s surely time for Slot to confer with FSG chiefs and make a decision on one struggling star’s future.
FSG should axe £150k-per-week Liverpool flop
Change is going to be afoot on Merseyside. However, if a player of Isak’s calibre is to become the central star of Slot’s squad, unnecessary members will need to be cashed in.
And while you should never write a player off, Federico Chiesa has flattered to deceive all season and doesn’t look like he’s going to become a significant piece in Slot’s long-term plans.
Federico Chiesa in action for Liverpool
The sole first-team arrival last summer, Liverpool signed Chiesa from Juventus as he entered the final year of his contract. The Old Lady wanted to cash in, and welcomed a cut-price £12.5m bid.
Once regarded as a “world-class” forward by those such as journalist Zach Lowy, the Italy international – instrumental in winning the 2020 Euros – has endured a torrid time on the injury front, with residual problems keeping him on the sidelines for much of his opening period on Merseyside.

With just one goal to his name this term and not a single Premier League start to boast, Chiesa, 27, is struggling.
The £150k-per-week forward’s sale may be necessary. After all, he’s one of the top earners. So much so that Nunez (£140k per week) and the £120k-per-week Dominik Szoboszlai take home a smaller purse. This is in large part due to his existing salary in Italy.
In fact, Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher, not one to mince words, even remarked that Chiesa has “contributed nothing” since moving to England.
Given the Reds met with their fringe forward’s representatives in January to discuss the possibility of a premature exit, it doesn’t look good for a player who is used sparingly by Slot.
When Doak returns, is he going to be kept in the shadows? Will Chiesa be ahead in the pecking order?
It’s time to prepare to cash in.

For the Mexico national team, winning any CONCACAF tournament is not just a goal—it’s an expectation. That pressure is something veteran manager Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre fully embraces as he prepares to lead into the 2025 Gold Cup, where Mexico will aim to defend their 2023 title and capture a record-extending 10th championship.
Fresh off winning the CONCACAF Nations League—ending the recent dominance of the United States—Aguirre made it clear that Mexico welcome the favorites tag but recognizes the level of competition they’ll face.
“Yes, we are favorites. The numbers and history speak for themselves—we have the responsibility to be title contenders. I accept that label, but we also respect every opponent,” Aguirre said during a press conference. “We’re not the only favorites. The teams that reached the Nations League Final Four—Canada, the U.S., and some strong Central American sides—will also be tough rivals.”
One of the more emotionally charged matchups in the upcoming Gold Cup will see Mexico face off against Costa Rica, now coached by Miguel Herrera—a familiar name in Mexican football.
“It fills me with pride to see Miguel building his career abroad,” said Aguirre. “We all take a risk when we leave Mexico. I’ve been in that position. Miguel Herrera Aguirre, he’s my 'cousin', and facing him will be special—both professionally and personally.”
AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE
Aguirre also shared his thoughts on the evolving U.S. national team, now under the leadership of Mauricio Pochettino. While acknowledging the Americans are not at their peak, Aguirre sees them as a formidable opponent.
“Mauricio’s track record speaks for itself. I actually replaced him at Espanyol before he went on to succeed in England,” Aguirre recalled. “He’s a coach who values possession and control. International football is never easy, but with the kind of talent the U.S. has in Europe, they’ll be a serious threat.”
Mexico recently snapped a long winless streak against the United States with a 2-0 victory in a 2024 friendly match. Prior to that, El Tri had failed to defeat the USMNT in seven consecutive games—losing five and drawing two.
The two regional powerhouses could meet again in this summer’s Gold Cup. If both sides top their respective groups, a potential showdown awaits in the final. However, should either team finish second, they may cross paths as early as the quarterfinals.
Getty Images SportWHAT JAVIER AGUIRRE SAID
With Club América set to face LAFC in a play-in match for a spot in the Club World Cup on May 31 — a spot left vacant after León’s withdrawal— Aguirre acknowledged that scheduling conflicts with the Gold Cup could impact national team call-ups. Still, he hopes players will prioritize international duty.
“If América qualifies, yes, it could affect our roster,” he admitted. “But we have a pool of 60 players, and we can put together a competitive squad. Personally, I believe most players would choose to represent their country at the Gold Cup, especially with the World Cup just a year away. I know I would.”

Chelsea are now showing a strong interest in a “skilful” winger, but they will have to do battle for his signature with their Premier League rivals, according to a report.
Blues eyeing summer move for winger
Enzo Maresca had previously predicted that his side weren’t ready to be involved in a Premier League title race, and it seems like the manager was correct, with the Blues falling down to sixth place after their 3-0 defeat away at Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday night.
The west Londoners have spent big on new signings ever since the arrival of Todd Boehly, but Maresca may feel some new additions are necessary at the end of the season if his side are to catch up with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.
Maresca seems particularly keen on bringing in a new winger this summer, with FC Copenhagen’s Roony Bardghji believed to be of interest, while they have also been linked with moves for the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Luis Diaz.

During the January transfer window, Chelsea tabled a £12.6m bid for Deportivo La Coruna winger Yeremay Hernandez, which was knocked back by the Spanish side – but there has now been a new update on their pursuit.
According to reports from Spain, the Blues are showing strong interest in Hernandez ahead of the summer transfer window, but there is now increased competition for his signature, with Arsenal also keen on getting a deal done.
A deal would be relatively inexpensive for either of the Premier League sides, as there is a €20m (£17m) release clause in his Deportivo contract.
The report states the 22-year-old would fit perfectly into Maresca’s system given his versatility, and Chelsea view him as a key part of their long-term project.

"Skilful" Hernandez performing well in Spain
Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has praised the winger for his performances in Spain’s second tier this season, and while providing an overview of the other skills he has at his disposal, also claimed that Hernandez has “excellent vision”.
The Deportivo star is his side’s top scorer in La Liga 2 this season, finding the back of the net on nine occasions and scoring at an average of 0.39 goals per game.
While performing well in La Liga 2 is not necessarily an indication a player would be capable of making the step up to one of the Premier League’s top clubs, the Spaniard is clearly talented, and it could be worth taking a punt.
At just £17m, signing Hernandez would be a low-risk move for Chelsea, but they will need to hope his head is not turned by Arsenal.

Since Ruben Amorim took charge of Manchester United at the end of 2024, the Red Devils have had to adapt to a new system, a 3-4-2-1. In many ways, this is a good thing, given how much they struggled in a back four under Erik ten Hag.
It has meant that plenty of players have needed to remodel certain aspects of their game to fit in with how Amorim sets his side up. For example, winger Alejandro Garnacho has had to play more as a number ten than as an out-and-out winger.
Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachocelebrates after the match
Another player who has needed to adapt is Diogo Dalot, who has been playing wing-back in recent weeks.
Dalot’s form under Amorim
Life under Amorim has been busy for Dalot. He has been a crucial player for the new Red Devils boss, playing 24 games across all competitions so far. He has only missed one game, the 3-1 Premier League win over Southampton for which he was suspended.
Dalot also managed to get himself on the scoresheet earlier in the season, scoring a well-taken goal in the Europa League against Romanian side FCSB.
He ghosted towards the back post, converting Kobbie Mainoo’s cross with an outstretched leg.
However, things have not been as easy for Dalot as they may seem. His form has been patchy at times, with football analyst and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown H particularly scathing with his criticism.
He said at the start of February that the United number 20 has been “garbage for months”, suggesting his form has been quite poor.
In The Pipeline
On Thursday night in United’s Europa League Round of 16 clash against Real Sociedad, the Portuguese international failed to cross to Rasmus Hojlund when the Dane made a great run to create space in the box for himself.
The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell said the United striker “went crazy” at the United right-back for his failure to pass.
It has certainly been a tough few months for Dalot, whose form has been patchy. Perhaps it is time for Amorim to look elsewhere to help reduce the workload on his right wing-back.
There is one option in the academy he could turn to.
Man Utd's academy wing-back solution
Even in their worst moments, one thing United as a football club can always be proud of is their academy. The Red Devils have lots of exciting stars coming through their esteemed Carrington Academy.
The solution to taking the burden off Dalot could be young full-back Jaydan Kamason. The 18-year-old has been in excellent form for the youth sides this season, and has been described as a “different class” by one academy insider on X.
This season, he has made 27 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and grabbing an impressive six assists. His performances in the FA Youth Cup have been outstanding.
Kamason grabbed two assists in the 5-1 demolition of Chelsea in the fifth round, and scored a sensational goal against Arsenal in the quarter-final, which United won 3-2 in extra time.
Kamason has also impressed for the Red Devils in the UEFA Youth League this season. One of his best performances came in the 5-2 thrashing of FK Zalgiris.
As per Sofascore, the full-back had 121 touches of the ball and completed 96% of his passes. He also won 100% of his tackles.

There is no doubt that Kamason seems like an exciting talent for Amorim’s squad going forward. He clearly has attacking nous, given the goals and assist numbers he has to his name this term, and is also an excellent defender.
After making a real impression for the academy this term, perhaps a first-team debut for the 18-year-old is not too far away, to help ease the burden on Dalot and unleash another talented academy graduate.

As journalist Shaun Connolly said, Kamason is certainly “banging” on the door for a debut sooner rather than later.
