'William Saliba looks like a Real Madrid player' – Jamie Carragher warns Gunners fans their club awaits same fate as Liverpool of old

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has no doubt that a team like Real Madrid could poach Arsenal centre-back William Saliba.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has fired a warning at Arsenal fans in light of the Gunners' trophyless spree, stating that William Saliba won't think twice before switching to a bigger club like Real Madrid in search of collective success.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Considered one of the best centre-backs in the world, Saliba has been a pillar in Arsenal's defence since the 2022-23 season, playing a big role in turning Mikel Arteta's side from top four outsiders to title contenders. However, the French defender has won just two trophies, the FA Community Shield in 2020 and 2023.

Recently, he has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants adamant on adding the 23-year-old to their ranks even if it means breaking the bank to make him the most expensive defender in history.

  • WHAT JAMIE CARRAGHER SAID

"There is one player, and people will be thinking I’m trying to cause a problem for Arsenal here and I’m not," Carragher said on the latest episode of 'It’s Called Soccer' podcast (h/t Mirror).

"But I think when you’re at a club, and this happened to us at Liverpool, once you don’t win the league or the Champions League, other bigger clubs start thinking, 'okay, we can take their player'.

"So for us at Liverpool it was [Xabi] Alonso, [Javier] Mascherano and [Fernando] Torres and then that team that had been built by Rafa Benitez – players were just leaving left, right and centre. I do look at Saliba and to me he looks like a Real Madrid player. I can imagine him in a Real Madrid kit."

    WHAT NEXT FOR WILLIAM SALIBA?

Next week will be a crucial one for Arteta and his troops, as they travel to Eindhoven to take on PSV in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday, March 4, followed by a trip to Old Trafford to face an out-of-sorts Manchester United on March 9.

Aston Villa now want "special" £83k-p/w ace in January ahead of Arsenal

Aston Villa are already eyeing up the January transfer window as they look to get out of their rut of poor form, and are keen to land one man ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal, according to a new report.

Aston Villa winless in six

Though they came from behind twice to claim a point against Crystal Palace in their latest outing, the draw with the top-flight strugglers continued a worrying theme in the Midlands.

It made it six games since their last win (a 2-0 Champions League victory over Bologna in October) – a run of form that includes four defeats and two draws. It has seen Unai Emery’s side fall off the pace, with Villa now eighth but just three points ahead of Manchester United in 12th, albeit only three behind Chelsea in third.

“We deserved more but we made some mistakes that we need to correct,” Emery explained after the game. “We had chances to score, we came back. The penalty was a key moment.

“In the second half, we pushed and felt close to scoring, but we have to accept one point.”

Now out of the Carabao Cup, they have also seen their 100% Champions League record ended and are in need of a string of strong results in the coming weeks to get back towards where they aimed to be this season, starting with their midweek clash against Juventus.

Now, attention has already turned to how they could add to their ranks in January, and they are keen to beat Arsenal to a market opportunity.

Aston Villa want to sign "special" talent

According to CaughtOffside, Emery’s side are keen to beat his former club to the signing of out-of-favour Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler, who is thought to be set to leave on loan.

The Turkey international has hardly featured this season, starting just four La Liga games and being an unused substitute on four occasions. Though he has starred while away with Turkey on international duty, there is a feeling that he may well need to leave to gain more experience and game time.

Aston Villa have hit the jackpot on midfielder who is like a current Premier League star

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 24, 2024

Highly rated and still having almost five years left to run on his deal worth €100,000 (£83,000) a week at the Santiago Bernabeu, he is only likely to be able to leave on loan in January.

Aston Villa are keen to pounce should he become available, with the report explaining that there is “strong interest” from the Villans in the Turkey international, who has been dubbed “special” on X by TheEuropeanLad after showing his impressive moves this weekend.

Though Morgan Rogers has enjoyed a strong start to the season, there is no doubt that another creative option for Emery’s side would give them the best chance of success this season, while Guler could prove a difference-maker at Villa Park.

Farke could drop Solomon by unleashing Leeds star who’s "different class"

Leeds United return from the international break as they prepare to travel to Wales to take on Swansea City in the Championship this afternoon.

The Whites have had to wait until the majority of the other teams in the league played on Friday and Saturday, and now know that they can move into the automatic promotion places with a win over the Swans.

Daniel Farke’s side secured a 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Elland Road in their last match before the break, and will be looking to build on that with another three points.

However, there were still some underwhelming performances from Leeds players in that victory over Marti Cifuentes’ team, with Manor Solomon potentially in danger of losing his place in the XI.

Manor Solomon's performance against QPR

The Tottenham Hotspur loanee was selected to start on the left flank against QPR and failed to make the most of his opportunity to impress.

In his 72 minutes on the pitch for Leeds, the Israel international missed a ‘big chance’ and failed to create any chances for his teammates, with that miss coming in the second half after his shot from close range was smothered by Paul Nardi.

Solomon failed with both of his attempted dribbles and lost five of his eight duels throughout the game, which shows that QPR’s players found it far too easy to get the better of him.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The 25-year-old flop has now gone seven Championship games without a goal or an assist, since recording an assist against Hull on his debut, and Farke must ruthlessly drop him to the bench after another match without an attacking contribution.

The player who should replace Manor Solomon for Leeds

Dan James was on the bench against QPR and bringing him back in from the start would allow the German head coach to drop Solomon out of the starting line-up.

The Wales international had started the three league games prior to the last match and should be brought straight back into the XI for this afternoon’s clash with Swansea.

James, who was once hailed as “different class” by Ally McCoist, has begun this season with a return of two goals and three ‘big chances’ created in six Championship starts, which shows that he has been far more involved at the top end of the pitch than Solomon has been.

As you can see in the table above, the Welsh speedster also proved his worth in the second tier during the 2023/24 campaign, with regular quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

The former Manchester United winger has the ability to provide a regular threat as a scorer and can break down opposition defences to create chances for his teammates on a regular basis, which is why he is such a key player for the Whites.

With this in mind, Solomon must be ruthlessly dropped to the bench after his poor showing last time out in order for James to be unleashed from the start, with Wilfried Gnonto moving over to the left wing with the Welshman on the right.

Alex Davies banned and fined over historic offensive tweets

Alex Davies, the Warwickshire wicketkeeper-batter, has been banned for five matches – four of them suspended – and fined £1500 for a series of offensive tweets he posted as a teenager.Davies, who joined Warwickshire ahead of the 2022 season, was one of five Lancashire players investigated internally for posting social media messages containing “discriminatory language” last season. The reported in June that Davies, Liam Hurt, Luke Wells, Josh Bohannon and Richard Gleeson were under investigation, following the emergence of Ollie Robinson’s historic tweets during his England Test debut. The players were handed formal warnings by the club.A disciplinary panel convened by the ECB’s Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) found that Davies’ tweets were “in clear breach of the ECB’s anti-discrimination policy”, adding that “the gravity of this matter lies not just within the nature of the posts themselves, but because the message must be made clear to all who play the professional game, and to all those who play elsewhere, that such behaviour will not tolerated.”The CDC report said: “AD [Davies] acted in breach of these ECB directives because of his posting of a series of 17 offensive tweets from his Twitter account over a period of 19 months between September 3, 2011 and April 6, 2013, when he was aged 17 and 18.”At all material times he was a registered cricketer with LCCC [Lancashire]. He accepts that he received training in the use of social media throughout this period, although the panel accepts that the sophistication of that training has advanced significantly since.”These tweets contained a number of racist, sexist, disablist, homophobic and other offensive remarks. They were publicly accessible until June 2021, when AD deleted his Twitter account.”Related

The report added that there were several mitigating factors in Davies’ defence. These included the time period – eight years – that had elapsed since his tweets were posted, a lack of previous disciplinary offences committed, his voluntary work within the sport, and character references “which persuasively demonstrated that a naïve and at times reckless young man has matured beyond his years, and is now regarded as both a leader and a role model by his peers in the professional game”.”AD’s remorse and shame are, in the panel’s view, both sincere and insightful,” the report added. “He expressed these sentiments in his early admission of guilt and ongoing cooperation in these proceedings, as well as a further apology made directly to the panel: these factors are very much to his credit.”Four of the five matches involved in Davies’ ban have been suspended, meaning he is only likely to miss Warwickshire’s opening County Championship fixture against Surrey in April. He has two weeks to appeal, but Mark McCafferty, Warwickshire’s chair, said the club expected him “to accept his punishment with good grace and focus now on being the best cricketer he can be, as well as working with us to ensure that the club is inclusive to all in every respect”.”We support the decision of the Cricket Disciplinary Committee to issue Alex Davies with a fine and match ban for comments he made on social media a number of years ago, prior to joining Warwickshire CCC,” McCafferty added. “There is no excuse for any form of discrimination, regardless of when it took place, and there has to be a real consequence for such actions.”That said, people need to be given the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and he is extremely apologetic, recognises that what he wrote as a young man was wrong and has since worked hard to improve his attitude to life, as well as support younger players as they transition to being professionals.”

Lucknow makes KL Rahul joint-highest-paid player in IPL history

Ahmedabad, meanwhile, confirms that Hardik Pandya will captain its team

Goenka: ‘Looking to build a team that can compete successfully for many, many years’

KL Rahul has been signed by the Lucknow IPL franchise for INR 17 crore (US$ 2.28 million approx.), making him the joint-highest-paid player in the IPL across seasons, along with Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli. Kohli was signed for the same amount by Royal Challengers in 2018, ahead of the last mega IPL auction.Lucknow, one of the two new teams added to the IPL last October, will enter next month’s mega auction with INR 59 crore (US$ 7.93 million approx.) in their purse, after having also acquired the services of Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis for INR 9.2 crore (US$ 1.24 million approx.) and uncapped Indian legspinner Ravi Bishnoi for INR 4 crore (US$ 0.54 million approx.). The difference in the amount paid for the players and the purse remaining is due to the IPL’s rules on minimum amount deducted from the purse for a certain number of players drafted in, irrelevant of how much was spent on the players.ESPNcricinfo had reported on Lucknow’s pre-auction picks earlier this week, and on Friday night, Sanjiv Goenka, who heads the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG) that owns the franchise, confirmed the line-up on a Star Sports programme.Ahmedabad, the other new team, which was bought by global private equity giants CVC Capital, will enter the IPL auction with a purse of INR 52 crore (US$ 7 million approx.) after having signed Indian allrounder Hardik Pandya and Afghanistan legspinner Rashid Khan for INR 15 crore (US$ 2.02 million approx.) each and India batter Shubman Gill for INR 8 crore (US$ 1.07 million approx.). Ahmedabad also confirmed on Friday that Pandya would captain the team. The IPL allowed both new teams to pick three players (who had not been retained by the eight existing franchises) each ahead of the auction, which is scheduled for February 12 and 13 in Bengaluru.ESPNcricinfo Ltd’What’s better than someone who gives you three things?’
Talking to Star Sports, Goenka said that the three players his franchise had picked would not only “propel” the team but also “lay the foundation” for the future. “KL is not only an outstanding batsman but also a great wicketkeeper,” Goenka said. “Marcus is a great finisher, a good bowler and a phenomenal fielder. Ravi brings a unique dimension to the spin department and is an exceptional fielder. We want players to be here for three-four-five-six-seven-eight years.”Goenka also confirmed that Rahul would be Lucknow’s captain. “Yes, KL will be the captain. I have been very impressed with not only his batting and wicketkeeping, but also his leadership skills. He is evolving, growing, maturing as a leader. He is somebody I would have wanted to lead the team and I do believe that given the right atmosphere, environment, he will emerge as a remarkable leader.”The Lucknow team had earlier appointed former Zimbabwe captain and England coach Andy Flower as head coach, and former India captain Gautam Gambhir as mentor. Gambhir, who has won the IPL previously as captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, twice, said signing up Rahul was a “no-brainer”. “He’s a work in progress, he keeps, he opens the batting,” Gambhir told Star Sports. “He consistently has been a phenomenal run-scorer. And what’s better than someone who gives you three things?”Gambhir said the franchise viewed Stoinis as their designated finisher, especially since the likes of Ben Stokes would not be available. “Stoinis, purely from a finisher’s point of view, since we didn’t know if Ben Stokes was going to be in the auction or not. And Stoinis can bat in the middle or finish the games too.”Bishnoi was the highest wicket-taker in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup and was then picked by Punjab Kings, where he has been impressive over two seasons. Gambhir described the 21-year-old legspinner as one of the “most exciting prospects” in the IPL. “He is a complete wicket-taking option.”RPSG had bid a record sum of INR 7090 crore (nearly US$ 940 million) to buy the Lucknow franchise. This was the second time the group has bought an IPL team, having owned the Rising Pune Supergiant(s) franchise for two seasons in 2016 and 2017. An ambitious owner, Goenka was not shy of replacing MS Dhoni as captain with Australia’s Steven Smith in 2017, after the team’s below-par showing in 2016.1:41

Kirsten: ‘Hardik will be really motivated to come in and make a play’

‘Motivated to show what he’s capable of as a leader’
Former South Africa batter and India head coach Gary Kirsten, who will serve as mentor-cum-batting coach at Ahmedabad, explained the franchise’s thinking behind making Pandya captain. “He’s a young, new captain and he’ll be motivated to come in, make a play and show what he’s capable of at this level as a leader,” Kirsten told Star Sports. “He’s a great leader, a high performer, and he’s really motivated. What I’ve heard is that he is keen to get in the mix. What I’ve heard, he’s raring to go and get in the mix from a leadership perspective. That’s very exciting for us to have a player with such a level of skill, motivated to do well.”Kirsten has also previously worked with Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Royal Challengers, and it was at Royal Challengers that Kirsten first teamed up with former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra, who will be Ahmedabad’s head coach. The franchise has also appointed former England batter Vikram Solanki as team director – he had worked with Nehra and Kirsten for one season (2019) at Royal Challengers. It will be the first time Kirsten works with Rashid, though. Rashid is headed over from Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Kirsten is looking forward to the experience. “Rashid has proven his value all around the world,” Kirsten said. “I haven’t yet worked with him, but I’ve met him a few times. Watching him on the field, he is a competitive young man and wants to do well for the franchises he plays in.”Kirsten called Gill, who was released by Knight Riders, a “match-winner”. “Gill is a fantastic player who, at the end of the day, in my view, should be playing for India. He’s on the verge of that and plays with great flair and instinct for the game. He can be a match-winner on his own.”

Bancroft shines again on his happy hunting ground

The opener fell late in the day for 117 as Western Australia continue to push for a home Shield final

Cameron Bancroft put in another long shift Bankstown Oval•Getty Images

Cameron Bancroft’s first Sheffield Shield century of the season lifted Western Australia to a strong position after day one against New South Wales at Bankstown Oval. The former Test opener showed trademark concentration before being dismissed in the final overs of the day as the visitors reached 3 for 231 at stumps. He fell victim to the new ball and was trapped lbw by Chris Tremain for 117, having hit nine boundaries in his 262-ball knock.Bancroft, who batted for 12 hours across two innings against the Blues at the same venue three years ago, looked more than capable of reprising that feat from the outset on Tuesday. He managed just 28 in the first session after Western Australia had won an important toss and elected to make first use of the wicket.”New South Wales bowled really well so I had to work hard for runs,” said Bancroft. “It is a wicket that is obviously quite slow with not a lot of sideways movement but there was enough variation to make it difficult.”The outfield is really slow as well which doesn’t help and I think spin will play more of a role as the game goes on.”Shaun Marsh proved to be an able lieutenant for Bancroft and batted with similar caution as the pair added 141 for the second wicket. The partnership ended when allrounder Jack Edwards induced a thin edge from Marsh for his second scalp.Edwards earlier sent Sam Whiteman back to the pavilion when the opener edged a sharp catch to Trent Copeland at first slip.Hilton Cartwright was 29 not out when stumps were drawn while new batter Josh Philippe is on 5.Daniel Hughes and Moises Henriques were notable returnees to the New South Wales side after missing the recent match due to a Covid infection and Australian team duties respectively. Both sides, along with Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania, boast two wins apiece heading into the penultimate round.

Fulham make enquiry to sign £2.49m star likened to "unstoppable" ace

Fulham are among the Premier League teams to have made an enquiry to sign a £2.49 million attacker, according to a new report.

The Cottagers come into this November international break in a very good place, having won their last two games after victories over London rivals Brentford and Crystal Palace. Marco Silva’s side have 18 points from 11 games, sitting just a point behind fourth-placed Arsenal.

Fulham put on red alert as Bayern Munich "jewel" set to be shown the door

He’s struggled for game time…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 8, 2024 Fulham transfer news

It has been an impressive 2024/25 season for Fulham and Silva so far, and they will hope that continues when the Premier League returns in a couple of weeks. The January transfer window is not that far away, and the Fulham hierarchy, along with Silva, may have their eye on one or two players that they would like to add to their squad.

However, they could face a battle to keep hold of one of their key players, as Juventus are plotting a move to sign defender Joachim Andersen. The centre-back only returned to Craven Cottage in the summer from Crystal Palace, but his performances have been rather impressive, and it seems that the Serie A giants are keen to bring him to Turin.

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

Fulham will hope January is a month where they can strengthen their side rather than weaken it, as they have an interest in signing Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. The teenager has struggled for regular minutes this season under Vincent Kompany, and it has led to Bayern allowing Tel to leave the club on loan when January arrives. This has put Fulham on alert, as they would like to add the 19-year-old to their team.

Tel is not the only player that Fulham have on their radar ahead of the new year, as there is another player they are also keeping an eye on.

Fulham make enquiry to sign £2.49m star

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Fulham have made an enquiry to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Celtic. The 24-year-old joined the Hoops in January of this year from Rapid Vienna; he played 18 times last season, scoring three goals and recording three assists.

Kuhn, who has a Transfermarkt value of €3m (£2.24m), has been very impressive this season, scoring four goals in 10 Scottish Premiership games. That form has now put him on the radar of Fulham, as well as fellow Premier League team Brentford.

The Celtic winger, who can play anywhere across the frontline, is a player who, as per FBref, is considered very similar to Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo. The Dutchman, who has been labelled as “unstoppable” by Statman Dave, ranks third for comparable players to Kuhn in this season’s Champions League.

Marinakis planning Nottingham Forest January swoop for £60m striker

Nottingham Forest are planning on making a January bid for an “amazing” striker who could cost £60 million, according to a new report. The Reds have been one of the surprise packages of this campaign so far, as they find themselves in the European places after 13 league games and nowhere near the bottom three.

Nottingham Forest hit gold selling £15m star who's now worth less than Boly

Nottingham Forest made the right call in offloading the ace despite him being a crucial player.

ByEthan Lamb Nov 28, 2024 Nottingham Forest transfer news

The January transfer window is now under a month away from opening, and Forest could have their eye on one or two fresh additions, as Nuno Espirito Santo will want to keep up this pursuit of an unexpected European spot for next season.

It has been reported that Forest have made Anderlecht defender Moussa Ndiaye their priority target for January. The 22-year-old is being looked at by a host of teams across Europe, one of which is Forest, who are looking to strengthen their squad in January and have made him a top target for the New Year.

Signing a striker could also be high on the Reds list for January, as they have placed Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin on their radar. Nuno’s side are among the Premier League clubs looking to sign the striker, as he refuses to sign a new Everton contract, which means they could be forced to sell in January before he leaves for free in the summer. But Calvert-Lewin is not the only forward being considered, with cover for the excellent Chris Wood required.

Nottingham Forest planning January swoop for £60m striker

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest are planning on making a January bid for Evan Ferguson of Brighton & Hove Albion. The young striker has been with the Seagulls since January 2021, after making the move from Irish football.

Ferguson, who was described as “amazing” by former teammates, has been a breath of fresh air since joining Brighton. The forward scored six goals in 19 Premier League games in his first full season, and he then followed that up by scoring another six last season.

However, so far in this 2024/25 season, Ferguson has struggled for regular game time, playing just eight times in the league, and only one has come as a start. This report states that Forest are keen on signing Ferguson but on a permanent basis, as it’s been claimed that he could be available for a loan deal.

Several Premier League teams are interested in a loan switch, and Forest are hoping to beat them to the signing as they plan on making a permanent offer. Tanvir, Cutting revive old feud, pick up 15% fines in PSL

Sohail Tanvir and Ben Cutting have both been fined 15 per cent of their match fees after reviving a dispute that has been running for several years. The incident occurred in Tuesday’s PSL game in Lahore between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, which the former – Cutting’s team – won.In the 19th over of Zalmi’s innings, Cutting hit Tanvir for 27 runs, including four sixes off the first five balls. After the third consecutive six Cutting stuck out both middle fingers at Tanvir. After the fourth six, the pair had an exchange out in the middle, when the umpires intervened.Off the very first ball of the next over – the 20th – Cutting sliced Naseem Shah into Tanvir’s hands at short third man. Tanvir reciprocated Cutting by sticking up both his middle fingers as a send-off.

The pair have history, which Tanvir elaborated on in an apology on Instagram later. In 2018 in the CPL, Cutting had hit Tanvir for six, before getting bowled off the next ball. Then, Tanvir sent Cutting off with both his middle fingers out. Both the players were found to have violated Article 2.6 of the PSL code of conduct, for “using a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during a PSL Match”.Both pleaded guilty and accepted the sanctions proposed to be imposed by the match referee Ali Naqvi.”I went and apologised to him [Cutting] at breakfast the next morning,” Tanvir said on Instagram. “It wasn’t a good gesture at all, it should’ve been avoided.
