4/10 Norwich performer must have played his last game for the club

Norwich City's 2023/24 season ended in dismal fashion on Thursday night as they were humiliated at Elland Road in a 4-0 defeat to Leeds United.

The Canaries had held the Whites to a 0-0 draw at Carrow Road in the first leg and gave themselves a platform to go and attack the match in Yorkshire, but failed to do so.

David Wagner's side knew that they could not let the hosts get off to a fast start, to prevent the crowd from getting behind them early, yet that is exactly what happened.

Leeds dominated the game from the first whistle and found their first goal, through Ilia Gruev, after seven minutes and were 2-0 up inside the opening 20, thanks to a header from Joel Piroe.

Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville then added a third and a fourth either side of half time to book the Whites a place at Wembley and the Canaries a ticket to their summer holidays.

Norwich now have another season in the Championship beckoning and have reportedly decided to sack Wagner, with Carlos Cuesta and Steve Cooper of interest, but the German boss was not the only person from last night's encounter who must surely have no future in Norfolk.

One player who must have played his final game for the Yellows after his poor showing at Elland Road is central defender Ben Gibson.

Ben Gibson's performance against Leeds in numbers

The 31-year-old defender's lack of mobility was on full display in Yorkshire as he simply struggled to cope with the pace and intensity of the performance from the home side.

Rutter, Wilfried Gnonto, and Summerville's athleticism and pace when running at the Norwich backline was a frightening sight, as Shane Duffy and Gibson looked terrified every time a Leeds player got turned and started running towards them.

In 63 minutes on the pitch, before Kenny McLean was moved back to centre-back in his place, the veteran defender failed to win a single duel on the deck or in the air.

As you can see in the table above, Gibson did very little to stem the flow of Leeds attacks during the match, as he was dribbled past as many times as he made tackles and interceptions.

His failure to win a single duel, as well as the fact the defender only competed in two, summed up the team's performance from a Norwich perspective. The Canaries did not get close enough to the hosts all evening and came out second best all over the pitch with their passive approach.

Gibson did complete 95% (56/59) of his attempted passes but they did not amount to much as the Yellows failed to score and did not offer a consistent threat in possession.

The Pink'Un's Samuel Seaman awarded the former Middlesbrough star a dismal player rating of 4/10 for his display on Wednesday night, which may even seem generous given the score and his lack of impact on the defensive end – as shown in the aforementioned statistics.

It is now time for sporting director Ben Knapper to be ruthless in his approach, unlike Norwich on the pitch this week, and ditch the left-footed enforcer when his contract expires later this summer.

Why Ben Gibson should be released

The experienced defender's current deal at Carrow Road is due to expire at the end of June and the time now feels right for the club to move on from him ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Gibson has racked up 124 appearances for Norwich since his initial loan move from Burnley in 2020, which turned into a permanent one in 2021, and the 4-0 defeat to Leeds must be his last.

The 6 foot 1 colossus started 33 Championship games during the regular season and both of the play-off semi-final clashes with Leeds, which shows that Wagner relied upon him in the heart of his defence.

Norwich ended their campaign with the fifth worst xGA per 90 in the division (1.45), below relegated Huddersfield Town, and this speaks to how vulnerable their backline was with Gibson, along with the likes of Duffy, Jack Stacey, Sam McCallum, and Dimi Giannoulis.

As you can see in the table above, the central defender is currently the highest earner in the squad and his performance in the play-offs and Norwich's defensive record this term suggests that they have not been getting value for money.

At the age of 31, there may not be much, if any, development left for Gibson to go through, which is why Knapper must now look to the future beyond him, and hope to bring through a younger, more athletic, heir.

The player who could replace Ben Gibson

Norwich may already have a replacement for the veteran centre-half already in the building in the form of academy graduate Brad Hills, who just spent the year on loan with Accrington Stanley in League Two.

The 20-year-old, who was born in Norwich, won the fourth tier side's Player of the Season award for his fantastic efforts in the heart of their defence.

Whilst not a naturally left-footed player, Hills could play on the left side of the Canaries backline or he could play on the right, with another signing brought in to offer a left-footed balance when playing out from the back.

As you can see in the table above, the young colossus enjoyed a significantly better season than Gibson, albeit in League Two and it remains to be seen how he would cope with the step up to the second tier.

Hills, as shown in those statistics, has the potential to be an upgrade on the current Norwich centre-back by winning the ball back with greater regularity, whilst also dominating opposition players in physical duels with greater success.

The first step for the Canaries and Knapper, however, is to release Gibson at the end of his contract, making the 4-0 defeat to Leeds his final game for the club.

George Bartlett's unbeaten century stands Somerset in good stead

George Bartlett’s fourth first-class century transformed Somerset’s fortunes on a dramatic opening day of the Bob Willis Trophy match against Gloucestershire at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. The 22-year-old former England Under-19 batsman ended unbeaten on 100 as his side were bowled out for 237, having been 89 for 5 and 176 for 9 after losing the toss.Bartlett’s valiant innings occupied 143 balls and featured 17 fours. David Payne claimed 4 for 44 and Ryan Higgins 4 for 72, but a last-wicket stand of 61 between Bartlett and Jack Brooks frustrated the bowlers.By the close, Gloucestershire had slumped to 13 for 4, Chris Dent and Graeme van Buuren falling to Craig Overton, and Ben Charlesworth and nightwatchman Josh Shaw to Josh Davey in the first seven overs. The start of the day had seen Somerset plunge into trouble after visiting skipper Dent had elected to field, with threatening clouds gathering.Left-arm seamer Payne, fresh from eight wickets in the previous game against Glamorgan, bowled Eddie Byrom for a duck with a fine delivery at the start of the third over. With the total on 29, Somerset captain Tom Abell edged Shaw through to wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick, departing for 10, and at the end of a morning session interrupted for 40 minutes by a heavy shower, Somerset were 42 for 2.Higgins grabbed an important scalp soon after the interval, pinning James Hildreth lbw for 13 and it was 57 for four when opener Tom Lammonby was well caught low at third slip by Tom Lace off the same bowler, having made 24.Gloucestershire looked to be taking a firm grip when Steve Davies was caught down the leg-side by Roderick off Payne for 16 in the 35th over. But Bartlett looked in better form than his team-mates from the outset and by tea he had moved confidently to 43, off 89 balls, looking particularly strong off the back-foot through the off-side.Craig Overton provided support as batting began to look more comfortable under clearing skies and had contributed 32 to a stand of 75 when leg-before to Higgins with the total on 164 in the final session.A clatter of wickets followed, Roelof van der Merwe edging Payne to George Hankins at second slip, Jamie Overton caught behind aiming a mighty swing off the same bowler and Davey taken at first slip by Dent off Higgins, having been dropped by Hankins the previous ball.At 176 for 9, Somerset, whose top order batting had been fragile in previous games, looked in danger of ending their innings without a bonus point. But Bartlett, whose half-century had occupied 109 balls, began to cut loose and found a reliable partner in Brooks, not for the first time providing valuable runs at number 11.They should have been parted with the score on 195 when Hankins spilled another chance at second slip offered by Brooks off Matt Taylor.Gloucestershire’s fielding let them down as another chance offered by Brooks went begging and four overthrows contributed to the last-wicket stand.Bartlett continued to punish anything short through the covers and point. A richly-deserved hundred was reached with a single to third-man off Taylor and the young batsman leapt to punch the air in celebration.Brooks was caught at mid-off for 24 off the next delivery, but momentum was with Somerset and Craig Overton was quick to build on it by trapping Dent lbw for five in the third over of Gloucestershire’s reply.Charlesworth edged to second slip, van Buuren was caught behind and Shaw fell leg-before as the fiery Overton and accurate Davey threatened with virtually every ball.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Olise is enjoying life at Bayern following his summer transfer from Crystal Palace. The French winger shone again on Saturday, scoring a brace and bagging two assists in a 5-0 win over Werder Bremen. Yet it was a different story after the game. Olise didn't want to give a post-match interview and so was joined by team-mate Jamal Musiala. The two stood in front of the cameras, with Musiala answering all the questions while Olise remained mute. Musiala couldn't help but see the funny side and joked "That's the start Michael!"

This is not the first time that Olise's interview technique has made headlines. He gave blunt answers to questions during his Bayern Munich unveiling and does not appear to be comfortable in the media spotlight. Yet he's likely to find himself continuing to be the focus of attention if he can carry on his early-season form. Olise now has five goals and two assists in his last three matches for Bayern in all competitions.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Manager Vincent Kompany has been full of praise for Olise. He told reporters after the win over Bremen: “He's a special talent. It's a luxury at Bayern to have so many good players. Michael did very well. His start at FC Bayern couldn't be much better. He has to keep going this way. I haven't got the feeling that he's a player who feels much pressure. He just enjoys football."

Liverpool ready to submit substantial bid to sign £60m+ star who Slot knows

Liverpool are reportedly ready to submit their first bid to sign a midfield reinforcement for Arne Slot this summer, as the Dutchman looks to make his mark at Anfield.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds certainly aren't messing around this summer, with reports also suggesting that they've already tabled a bid to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson and have made contact with Benfica star Joao Neves this summer.

The Atalanta man played his part in the Italian side's shock 3-0 thumping of Liverpool at Anfield in their Europa League quarter-final first leg, before helping them go on to win the competition in its entirety.

Now, Liverpool could become the benefactors rather than the victims of his quality to hand Slot an ideal addition at the heart of his new side. Ederson may not be the only one through the door in the coming months, however, with Liverpool reportedly ready to hand their new manager a familiar face ahead of his first season in charge.

Liverpool enquire over Bellingham 2.0 who's “destined for elite football”

Arne Slot could turn this talented teenager into a real world-beater.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 7, 2024

According to Tutto Atalanta, Liverpool are ready to make a 'substantial' offer to sign Teun Koopmeiners, who Atalanta want more than €70m (£60m) for by the time that Euro 2024 comes to an end this summer.

It remains to be seen whether the Reds will match such a price tag in what could turn into a double swoop on the Serie A side if they continue their pursuit of Ederson on top of Koopmeiners. Slot, of course, knows the midfielder well from his time with him at AZ Alkmaar and could now finally reunite with his former player.

Netherlands midfielder Teun Koopmeiners

What's more, Koopmeiners is set to play with both Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo this summer as part of the Netherlands' Euro 2024, handing those three the opportunity to become familiar with each other before the Reds make their potential move.

"Elite" Koopmeiners can complete Liverpool midfield

Despite signing Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai last summer, Liverpool's midfield still lacks the final piece that Koopmeiners can provide in the coming months. The Atalanta midfielder, who can also play as a centre-back in another added boost, enjoyed an excellent campaign in Italy and could be more than capable of stepping into Liverpool's midfield.

Where Endo is arguably limited on the ball, Koopmeiners is an all-rounder at the centre of midfield, who can offer Liverpool what they've lacked since Fabinho was at his best at Anfield. Earning plenty of praise throughout his rise into the player now linked with Liverpool, Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig dubbed Koopmeiners "elite" in 2021 when he was working under Slot. Now possibly reuniting this summer, everything suggests that the Dutchman could be the perfect signing to get the Slot era started with a bang.

IPL 2020: Chennai Super Kings extend quarantine, to train from September 1

The development also means CSK will be the last franchise to start training for the tournament

Nagraj Gollapudi28-Aug-2020Chennai Super Kings have extended their quarantine period and have postponed the start of their IPL training camp to September 1. The Super Kings landed in Dubai on August 21 and were expected to start training on Friday, but ESPNcricinfo understands they have extended their quarantine beyond the mandatory six-day period put in place by the IPL. The tournament begins on September 19, but the IPL is yet to announce a schedule. It could not be confirmed exactly why the Super Kings have opted to stay indoors at the team hotel in Dubai. There has also been no official communication sent out by the franchise. Kasi Viswanathan, the Super Kings chief executive officer, did not respond to calls. As per the IPL’s Covid-19 protocols, all teams would have to undergo a test at the airport upon landing in the UAE followed by two tests at the team hotel on days 3 and 6 during the mandatory six-day quarantine at the hotel. Only after all test results come out negative the teams are allowed to start training.ESPNcricinfo understands other teams are already monitoring the developments in the Super Kings camp. Another franchise official said they even urged the IPL to issue an advisory to all teams to update everybody about the test results of all teams. The development also means the Super Kings will be the last franchise to start training for the tournament. Rajasthan Royals have already held two training sessions as they and Kolkata Knight Riders were the first two teams to land in the UAE (on August 20). The Knight Riders and defending champions Mumbai Indians – the two teams based in Abu Dhabi – will conduct their first training session on Friday. Delhi Capitals are scheduled to start their first training session on Saturday. Before heading to the UAE, the Super Kings, who finished as runners-up last season, had conducted a short conditioning camp for the Indian players in Chennai. The six-day camp, which was held at Chepauk from August 15-20, was attended by captain MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Piyush Chawla, Deepak Chahar along with bowling coach L Balaji.Earlier this week, Virat Kohli, the Royal Challengers Bangalore captain, had cautioned his squad to take the Covid-19 protocols seriously, warning them that anyone breaching the biosecure bubble could jeopardise the entire tournament.

Man Utd can forget McKenna with 4-2-3-1 boss who’s "always liked" Rashford

The 2023/24 season all comes to a head for Manchester United on Saturday afternoon, with the traditional season finale of the FA Cup final. Erik ten Hag’s side will meet their rivals Manchester City at Wembley for the second consecutive season, aiming to right their wrongs of last campaign and go out on a high note.

There is no doubt that it has been a poor campaign for Ten Hag and his team, finishing eighth in the Premier League, with a win against City now the only way they can qualify for Europe. In recent weeks, the rumours of the Dutchman departing United have been intensifying, but on Friday, journalists all but confirmed the news.

According to The Guardian's Jacob Steinberg, United’s new owners have “decided to sack Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup final”, regardless of the result against Pep Guardiola’s side. Ten Hag himself has already denied this, saying that INEOS “told me directly” that they would like to rebuild the club with him at the helm.

Ipswich boss and former United coach Kieran McKenna is hotly tipped to take charge of the Red Devils if Ten Hag does get removed from his post. He has done a super job with the Tractor Boys, helping them to back-to-back promotion from League One and the Championship.

However, there have been rumours this week of another recently sacked manager taking over at Old Trafford ahead of next season.

Man Utd’s managerial plans for the summer

The manager in question here is former PSG and Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino. Chelsea sacked the Argentine on Tuesday afternoon, and it has already been suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS could turn to him to take over at Old Trafford.

According to insider Graeme Bailey, Pochettino is in the mix for the role and is already 'willing to make a quick return to coaching' following his dismissal at Stamford Bridge. Despite a tough start to the season, Chelsea’s form took a positive turn towards the business end, losing just three games in all competitions since the start of February, with only one of those defeats coming in the Premier League.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Indeed, as Bailey points out, Pochettino’s sacking from the Blues means that there will be no release clause or need to buy him out of his contract. Bailey makes it clear that this has 'been highlighted to interested parties' already by his entourage.

This leaves the door open for United, or other clubs requiring a manager this summer, to make a quick move and appoint the Argentine without spending a penny. Whilst McKenna is no doubt an attractive prospect for the Red Devils, a deal for Pochettino is almost too good to be true.

How Pochettino would benefit Marcus Rashford

Pochettino is famed for his time at Tottenham, which included a superb run to the Champions League final in 2018. His fluid 4-2-3-1 system was one of the most enterprising in football at the time.

Although his side were trophyless, he brought Spurs to the brink of success which they had never experienced during the Premier League era. He was so good that former Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes described him as a “football genius” for his exploits in north London.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino.

One of the success stories of Pochettino’s time at Spurs was Son Heung-min, who thrived under the Argentine. He joined the club in 2015 for £22m and has become one of the best players in the Lilywhites’ history.

Under Pochettino, Son scored 75 goals and registered 35 assists in 203 games. He was deadly from the left, driving at players from his starting position out wide and exploiting the penalty box. If Pochettino got the United job, we could well see a similar role for Marcus Rashford, which could help him rediscover his best form.

There is no doubting Rashford’s quality. Whilst he has had a disappointing season in 2023/24, with just eight goals in all competitions, he has 131 goals and 64 assists for United in 401 games. He is a deadly winger when at his best, relentlessly running at players and using his pace to get in behind. Like he did with Son, this is a strength that Pochettino could exploit.

Pochettino has openly praised the 26-year-old in the past. In an interview with Sky Sports during the 2022 World Cup, the former Spurs boss explained that he has “always liked” Rashford, before discussing how he believes the winger is “a great player” and that the “quality is there for him”.

On reading this, United fans might be licking their lips at the heights Rashford could reach under Pochettino. He has a good track record with getting the best out of direct, wingers, with Son the perfect example. If United do decide to go down the Pochettino route, Red Devils fans could see the best of Rashford once again.

Ollie Pope out for four months after suffering dislocated shoulder

England batsman suffers recurrence of injury that caused three-month absence in 2019

Ollie Pope has been ruled out for up to four months after dislocating his left shoulder during last week’s third Test against Pakistan at the Ageas Bowl. The injury occurred on the fourth day of the match, when Pope slid to save a boundary off the second ball of Stuart Broad’s first over of the day and left the pitch immediately. He underwent an MRI scan in London on Wednesday and was reviewed by a consultant on Thursday. He will now have surgery on the injured shoulder in the next couple of weeks before commencing a rehabilitation programme with the Surrey and England medical teams. The injury is a cruel recurrence for Pope, given that he injured the same shoulder while playing for Surrey last summer. He was out of action for three months on that occasion, and was unavailable for selection during England’s Ashes campaign. It is possible, however, that Pope will not miss any Test cricket on this occasion, with England’s next engagements coming against Sri Lanka and India in early 2021, by which stage it is hoped that he will have recovered full fitness.Despite a tailing-off in form during the Pakistan series, Pope has been one of England’s breakthrough players of the past few months. He scored a matchwinning 135 not out against South Africa in Port Elizabeth in January, then made a crucial 91 in the series decider against West Indies in Manchester. He was also England’s top scorer in the first innings of the first Test against Pakistan, making 62 out of a total of 219, a performance that would prove vital in the team’s fightback to win on the fourth afternoon. After his previous shoulder injury, Pope told Wisden Cricket Monthly that the time away from the game had been a “blessing in disguise”, allowing him the chance to take stock and make changes to his technique.
