Sophie Devine joins Perth Scorchers in major WBBL signing

She will also captain the team having moved from the Adelaide Strikers

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Aug-2020The Perth Scorchers will be able to field a formidable top order in the Women’s Big Bash having secured the signing of Sophie Devine who has also been named captain.Devine joins Australia batter Beth Mooney as major acquisitions for the Scorchers as they look to reshape their batting unit following Meg Lanning’s move back to the Melbourne Stars.Devine has been one of the in-form players in the world over the last 18 months and was the player of the tournament in last season’s WBBL where she scored 769 runs and took 19 wickets for the Adelaide Strikers.ALSO READ: Beth Mooney quits Brisbane Heat to fill Meg Lanning’s shoes at Perth ScorchersShe then led New Zealand at the T20 World Cup earlier this year and has since been named their permanent captain. In the build-up to the World Cup she became the first player to make five consecutive 50+ scores in T20Is, a run she extended to six.Devine has strong links with Western Australia having been part of the WNCL set-up, a period she has credited for her prolific form.

“It’s a huge honour to be joining the Scorchers and leading the side this season, it’s an exciting new challenge for me and the team as we build towards the WBBL finals,” she said. “When the opportunity to play for Perth came up it was a pretty hard one to turn down, the Scorchers have a great history in the WBBL and BBL and I’m really looking forward to joining such a successful club.”I have spent some quality time in the WA set-up, which has really helped me further my game and I am looking forward to playing under [coach] Shelley [Nitschke], we have a great relationship and I have played a lot of cricket with her too over my years with the Strikers.”Nitschke said: “Sophie has proven herself as one of the best T20 players in the world, we are privileged to have her join the Perth Scorchers. A match-winner with both the bat and the ball, Sophie will be a great influence on the group as both a leader and role model.”Devine is not the only New Zealander to have inked in their WBBL season with the Brisbane Heat have re-signed duo Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green as they hunt of a hat-trick of titles. Both players had important roles in the Heat’s title-winning campaign last season. Green scored 309 runs in 15 innings, including a vital 46 off 29 balls in the semi-final against the Melbourne Renegades, while Kerr took 14 wickets at 25.50 and an economy rate of 6.22 with her legspin.”Maddy took on the role we gave her and showed her class and composure throughout, as well as providing another element to our leadership group. Amelia has enormous presence for a player so young and she thrived in the WBBL environment,” coach Ashley Noffke said. “I think both players got a lot out of the experience, and they were certainly key recruits for us when it came to finalising our list.”There remains considerable work to do be done as to how overseas players will be accommodated in the tournament this season due to the travel restrictions imposed by Covid-19 but there is hope they will be available for the competition. New Zealand are scheduled to be in Australia from late September for a tour which includes three T20Is and three ODIs”Like a lot of things now, we have some plans in place but will need to be agile when it comes to finalizing things,” Noffke said. “New Zealand are due to be here playing Australia in September and October, so hopefully we can work things out around that.”The Heat only had one player – allrounder Delissa Kimmince – on contract after last season so there is plenty of business for them to do ahead of defending their title. Last week they announced Jess Jonassen as their new captain following the retirement of Kirby Short.

Ipswich eyeing "outstanding" signing to compete with Tuanzebe

Kieran McKenna's precarious situation at Portman Road has, no doubt, added a lot of unnecessary distractions to proceedings in Suffolk when transfer targets should be the main priority.

Ipswich will just be praying that he stays put instead of heading out of the door to the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion or Manchester United, with a report from football journalist David Ornstein stating that he could sign a brand new deal very shortly to put an end to all this unwanted speculation.

If that is the case, Ipswich will soon look to press on with a number of deals, which includes this Tottenham Hotspur defender being reportedly on the agenda.

Ipswich looking at hijacking deal

Lilywhite Rose podcast contributor John Wenham has speculated that Ipswich are in for Spurs defender Japhet Tanganga this summer, stating that there was "some talk" involving the 25-year-old wanting to test himself in the Premier League, having starred on loan with Millwall last season in the division below.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga.

This would see Ipswich hijack a potential deal between the Lions and Spurs, with the Mirror reporting earlier in the month that Tanganga was going to relocate to the Den permanently after being allowed to head for the exit door for good by his parent club.

How Tanganga compares to Tuanzebe

Excelling in the second-tier in patches with Millwall – scoring two goals when coming up from the back from 18 total games in the league – Ipswich might view the 6-foot defender as a smart purchase to add strength in depth to the defensive areas ahead of the major step-up.

The two-time England U21 international would also push Axel Tuanzebe all the way on his arrival too, with the wantaway Spurs man capable of playing either at right-back or in a centre-back spot much like the former Man United defender.

Similar in many aspects of their game when glancing at the table above, with Tanganga beating his Ipswich counterpart in some areas defensively with more duels won and more clearances registered per game this season just gone, the 25-year-old would be a good utility option to get into the building this summer.

Tanganga's addition to the Ipswich ranks could even begin to be the end of Tuanzebe in a Tractor Boys strip, with the ex-Red Devils man burning a significant hole in the Suffolk club's back pocket at £20k-per-week considering his in-and-out nature in the first-team.

With Tanganga pocketing a healthy £25k-per-week, Tuanzebe potentially exiting could finance a deal to take place for the Spurs defender to join.

The 26-year-old did start the last four Ipswich games of the season, performing to the best of his ability when the pressure was on with six duels won on the final day, but Tanganga could now be viewed as an upgrade on the high earner.

Once described as being an "outstanding" talent by Gabriel Agbonlahor when still aiming to make it at Spurs, with the defender amassing 50 first-team appearances across a number of seasons, Portman Road might now be his next permanent home where he might show off his Millwall best regularly even when making the leap up.

Able to offer Ipswich more depth in the centre-back spots as well, with more numbers arguably needed here as well to compete with the likes of George Edmundson and Cameron Burgess, Tanganga looks to tick a lot of boxes when it comes to summer buys coming in that are ready to battle away in the top-flight.

Wolves outcast with 14 goals out on loan could be Neto’s replacement

The 2023/24 season has turned out to be an impressive campaign for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Many tipped Gary O’Neil’s side to suffer relegation come the end of the season, yet, despite many obstacles along the way, they have defied that and find themselves comfortably mid-table.

Wolves currently sit in 13th in the Premier League table on 46 points. However, if results go their way on the final day of the season, they could finish as high as tenth, leapfrogging the likes of Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Brighton in the process.

Despite their impressive points tally at this stage of the season, Wolves are actually overachieving on their expected points, according to Understat. As per the xPTS metric, they should be on 39.78 points, rather than the 46 they actually have, which is a 6.22 increase.

Naturally, with this good season comes some impressive performances from Wolves’ best players. One of their best players this season has been Matheus Cunha, who has scored 12 goals and registered seven assists, although despite his excellent performances, has not been linked with a move away from Molineux.

However, another of their best players is rumoured to be leaving the club this summer, following a superb campaign in 2023/24.

Pedro Neto’s season in numbers

The player in question here is Portugal international Pedro Neto, who, aside from Cunha, has arguably been Wolves’ best player in 2023/24. As a result, rumours are flying around that the young winger could depart the club in the summer.

Despite injury issues once again affecting his season, Neto has scored two goals and registered an impressive nine assists in just 19 games in the Premier League, as well as one goal and two assists in the FA Cup.

He is a wonderful ball carrier, using his low centre of gravity to slalom in between defenders and drive into the penalty box; Neto is one of the most direct players in the Premier League, which has shown this season.

However, due to a hamstring injury, the Portuguese winger has faced two separate spells on the sidelines this season. Neto has missed 20 games in total and has been injured for 129 days altogether, which is more than in 2022/23.

Neto is linked with a move to North London this summer, with both Tottenham and Arsenal thought to be interested in the 24-year-old, according to talkSPORT. The report goes on to explain Wolves would “demand a club-record fee” to acquire his services. Thus, it would need to surpass the £53m they received from Manchester City for Mathues Nunes last summer.

Despite the high chances of Neto leaving, O’Neil confirmed recently that, should the winger not depart the club, he is “committed to cracking on and showing everyone how good he is next season in a Wolves shirt”.

Wolves star Pedro Neto

With that in mind, Wolves will need a replacement for the dazzling wide man should he leave Molineux. Whilst they could dip into the transfer market, there could well be a replacement contracted to the club, who is currently out on loan.

Wolves' readymade Neto replacement

Neto’s fellow Portuguese winger Daniel Podence is the option Wolves have to internally replace their number seven. The 28-year-old has been on loan at Greek side Olympiacos this season, where he is having an impressive time of things.

In all competitions, Podence has scored 14 goals and registered 12 assists across 44 games, which included two assists at Villa Park to knock Aston Villa, Wolves’ rivals, out of the Europa Conference League semi-final.

He could certainly prove to be a good option for Wolves should Neto end up leaving Molineux this summer. However, statistically, they are not very similar players, with Neto being a superior ball carrier, whereas Podence is more of a creator on the ball.

According to Fbref, Neto averages 2.28 key passes per 90 minutes and 1.74 passes into the penalty area per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the 80th percentile and the 66th percentile of positionally similar players in Europe.

daniel-podence-wolverhampton-wanderers-premier-league

On the other hand, Podence averages 2.65 key passes per 90 minutes and an impressive 2.37 passes into the penalty area per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 12% and the top 9% of wingers respectively, as per Fbref.

However, Neto’s superb carrying ability shines through. He averages 5.81 progressive carries per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 6%, 3.77 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, ranking him in the top 4%, and 2.52 carries into the penalty box per 90 minutes, placing him in the top 12%.

Podence averages significantly less in these stats. He averages just 2.74 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which places him in just the 41st percentile, 2.56 carries into the final third per 90 minutes, ranking him in the 78th percentile and 1.46 carries into the penalty box per 90 minutes, which places him in the 73rd percentile.

Daniel-podence-wolves

There is a clear difference in each player’s skillset, with Neto more of a superb ball carrier in a transitional side, whilst Podence is a great creator in a side who have plenty of sustained possession each week. This is not to say neither player is good at the other’s best skill. Neto’s nine Premier League assists this season prove that. However, they certainly excel at one thing in particular.

Should Neto leave Wolves in the summer, bringing Podence back would save them lots of money, but he might not fit the transitional style of play that O’Neil has employed this season, which has been so successful for Wolves and could earn them a top-half finish.

With that in mind, it could well be better for the Midlands side to invest in a winger of a similar profile to Neto, rather than Podence. The 28-year-old has struggled in a Wolves shirt, and has been described as “frustrating” in the past by The Atheltic’s Wolves correspondent Steve Madeley.

With his sticks high at the minute, they could certainly get a good fee back for Podence, and recruit out wide to replace Neto should he leave this summer. Either way, the loanee remains a potential proposition for O'Neil to consider during the off-season.

EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal warned losing their ‘brain’ Martin Odegaard is a ‘massive’ blow ahead of north London derby as Tottenham legend Rafael van der Vaart claims Spurs can take advantage of injury-hit rivals

Tottenham will be thrilled that Arsenal have lost their "brain" Martin Odegaard for the north London derby, according to Rafael van der Vaart.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Odegaard will miss this weekend's north London derby clash after limping out of Norway's clash with Austria. He has since been ruled out for around three weeks, meaning he is also going to miss Arsenal's first Champions League clash of the season, against Atalanta, as well as the Gunners' league game against Manchester City.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Spurs come into the game on the back of an unremarkable start to the campaign; they have won one, drawn one and lost one of their opening three games, and went into the international break on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. As a result, Van der Vaart believes the club will be delighted the Gunners are without their captain. They will also be missing Declan Rice, who is suspended.

  • WHAT VAN DER VAART SAID

Van der Vaart told GOAL: “Yeah, (Odegaard being out is) massive. I mean, he's not only the captain but he's scoring goals, he's giving assists, every ball goes to him, he's the brain of the team, and you can always give the ball to him, and he's doing something good with the ball. So I think it's for Spurs, for him, it’s bad of course, but they can be happy that he's injured.”

The former Spurs star, who never lost a north London derby in which he scored, now believes Postecoglou's side can take all three points.

He added: “I have to say that I saw a few games also in the pre-season, and I think they look stable. Of course, they lost against Newcastle, that was a tough one. But when you win at home against Everton, quite easy. So I think they have confidence. And I think that the coach now will be quite happy with his squad, and especially now Arsenal are missing some midfield players, they have a good chance to win."

Peter Fulton steps down as New Zealand batting coach to join Canterbury

Former New Zealand batsman Peter Fulton has stepped down as the national team’s batting coach in order to become the head coach of the Canterbury men’s team.Fulton, who had replaced Craig McMillan, took up the job with New Zealand after the 2019 World Cup last year. His assignments with the team included a tour of Sri Lanka and Australia and a visit by England last year before a home series against India in early 2020.While calling it an “honour to get back involved with the national team”, Fulton looked forward to pursuing his ambitions to be a head coach.”The Canterbury role appealed to me in terms of my aspirations to be a head coach and further my development in the game. The chance to spend more time at home with my young family and coach my home province were also motivating factors in applying for the job.”NZC High Performance General Manager Bryan Stronach wished Fulton well for his new role with Canterbury, the domestic side he represented during his playing days. “Pete’s a respected figure who has contributed a lot to the Black Caps set-up and built strong relationships in his time with the team. With the Black Caps entering a winter period at home we’ll take some time to consider our options in terms of a replacement for Pete.”Fulton begins his new role from August 1, having also managed the Under-19 side earlier in his coaching career.

Dom Bess relishes 'learning on the job' after small but vital role in England's victory

Every day in the Test team is a chance to “learn on the job”, according to Dom Bess, England’s rookie offspinner, who said he would take a lot of confidence from his small but significant role in defeating West Indies at Emirates Old Trafford and squaring the series with one Test to play.Bess, who turns 23 on the eve of Friday’s third Test, picked up two wickets on the final day of the second Test, including the matchwinning dismissal of Kemar Roach and the vital scalp of West Indies’ captain, Jason Holder, as England overcame some stiff mid-afternoon resistance to surge to a 113-run victory midway through the final session. And while there’s no guarantee that Bess will retain his place in England’s attack for the series decider – the surfeit of right-handers in West Indies’ line-up means that Jack Leach, whose left-arm angle takes the ball away from the bat more regularly, could come into consideration – the fact that he’s played a part in another England victory, his fourth in six appearances since his debut against Pakistan in 2018, will give him plenty satisfaction for now.”The boys were obviously very happy with that,” Bess told Sky Sports at the end of the Test. “More relief I reckon than anything. As it was getting on, it just felt like the ball was getting a little bit softer. You could see the lads [feeling the effects of] having overs under their belt, and it was the first game back for three of them. So, we’re just very happy to level the series and now go into next Test with it all to play.”Bess’s figures of 2 for 59 in 15.1 overs were not the sort of dominant fifth-day performance that spinners are generally picked to produce, but as the bowler himself acknowledged, his opportunities for much of the day were restricted by his place in the pecking order – in particular, the need for him to perform a holding role at the Brian Statham End of the ground, while the seamers utilised the favourable breeze and variable bounce being generated from the James Anderson End.It wasn’t until the 61st over of the innings, when Ben Stokes took over at the Statham End with another energetic spell of short-pitched bowling, that Bess was given a chance to attack from his preferred end, and he produced one of the key moments of the day when he spun a big offbreak through Holder’s defences to bowl the West Indies captain for 35.ALSO READ: Dobell: Stokes is England’s man for all sessions“We talked about roles, we talked about bowling as a collective,” Bess said. “My role at that time was probably bowling the other end and trying to create as many chances as I could at that end. There were some that spun from there and I felt like I was in the game, but I was leaking a little bit. I was quite happy when I got to come up to the top end, and bowl with the wind, and a bit of rough.”Much of that rough outside the right-hander’s off-stump was created by the left-arm angle of Sam Curran, another of the young players whom England have trusted to hone their games on the highest stage. And as Curran helped to make it eight wins out of eight on the occasions that he’s featured in an England home Test since his own debut in 2018, Bess hoped that the pair could have a long and fruitful partnership as a bowling combination.”Perfect!” was Bess’s assessment of the rough that Curran creates in his follow-through. “Hopefully he can get a little bit heavier and keep running in, but it was in a good area and I knew where my length had to be on it. I knew I had to pull it back and make sure I got as many balls in there as possible, and be as consistent as possible.”I think I really built that pressure,” he added. “I feel like I’m learning every day, and I know that’s a bit of a cliché, but it’s genuine with me because when I’m on the job I’m going through so many emotions.”And that’s little wonder, given the fluctuations of fortune that Bess has endured in his short career – which encompassed a loan spell to Yorkshire last season when his first-team opportunities at Somerset dried up with Leach ensconced as the first-choice spinner, and a late call-up to England’s Test team in South Africa in December, where he starred with five first-innings wickets in their victory in Port Elizabeth.More recently, Bess has been linked with a permanent move to Warwickshire, where he is being earmarked as a successor to their long-term spinner, Jeetan Patel, while his game-craft was honed on the England Lions camp in Sri Lanka last winter, where he worked on his seam position with Rangana Herath. But for the time being, he’s obliged to do most of his learning on the big stage.”I’m talking with Daws [Richard Dawson, England spin coach] a lot about how consistent can I be in that area,” he added. “But I think going back up to that end, and producing some of those balls that I did, it’s given me a lot of confidence.”

Why Lee Carsley won't sing England national anthem during interim spell as boss sticks to pre-match ritual

Carsley preparing for first England gameEx-Ireland midfielder replaced SouthgateWon't sing God Save the King before matchWHAT HAPPENED?

Carsley is set to lead the Three Lions for the first time against Ireland in Dublin on Saturday evening. The former Everton midfielder is the newest England coach after Gareth Southgate called an end to his eight year-reign as after Euro 2024, and Carsley has already said he won't be partaking in the national anthem ahead of kick-off.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE EXPLANATION

The decision has riled some fans and people in the media, but this isn't a new thing for Carsley. Speaking to the press ahead of the Ireland encounter, the 50-year-old, who represented Ireland 40 times, admitted he's often so in the zone before games that his focus isn't on the national anthem. When the Birmingham-born coach managed England's Under-21, he was also tight-lipped when 'God Save the King' was playing.

WHAT CARSLEY SAID

Carsley said: “This is something that I always struggled with when I was playing for Ireland. The gap between your warm-up, your coming on to the pitch and the delay with the anthems. So it’s something that I have never done. I was always really focused on the game and my first actions of the game. I really found that in that period I was wary about my mind wandering off. I was really focused on the football and I have taken that in to coaching.

“We had the national anthem with the Under-21s also and I am in a zone at that point. I am thinking about how the opposition are going to set up and our first actions within the game. I fully respect both anthems and understand how much they mean to both countries. It’s something I am really respectful of.”

Carsley will be hoping for a winning start to life as England's 19th manager. After the opener, the Three Lions face Finland in their second Nations League game on Tuesday. Carsley also hopes to implement his style and philosophy on the squad as the full-time vacancy for the role is still available.

Rodgers must finally unleash Celtic’s 5 ft 10 “real threat” over Maeda

Celtic head into a game this weekend, for possibly the first time, without any stress or pressure as they prepare to take on St Mirren at Parkhead this afternoon.

The Hoops secured the Scottish Premiership title with a sublime 5-0 success over Kilmarnock away from Glasgow last time out, which means that there is nothing riding on the clash today.

This means that Brendan Rodgers and his team can go out and enjoy the team before their preparation for the SFA Cup final with Rangers at Hampden Park later this month.

Brendan Rodgers.

The Northern Irish boss, therefore, has a chance to make changes to his team to offer squad players an opportunity to get some minutes on the pitch.

With this in mind, Rodgers must finally unleash Luis Palma from the start over Daizen Maeda on the left flank against St Mirren today.

Daizen Maeda's performance against Kilmarnock

The Japan international produced a fantastic performance against Kilmarnock last time out in the Premiership, as the Hoops sealed the league title in emphatic fashion.

Maeda scored from close range, from Alistair Johnston's superb ball across the box, and then slide the ball over for James Forrest to score during the first half.

As you can see in the table above, the right-footed winger enjoyed an excellent evening on Wednesday night as he chipped in with a goal and an assist in the 5-0 win.

Rodgers must now drop him to the bench for this clash with St Mirren, though, in order to provide Palma with a chance to showcase his quality.

The league has already been won and Maeda could be given a rest, at least from the start, to keep him fresh for the SFA Cup final next week.

Why Luis Palma should start for Celtic

The Honduras international has only started four league games since the turn of the year and his last start for the club in the division came against Kilmarnock in February.

With the title already won, Rodgers has the freedom to bring him back into the XI in the hope that he can rediscover the form he showed during the first half of the campaign for Celtic.

Celtic forward Luis Palma.

The 24-year-old star, who former Hoops man Peter Grant lauded as a "real threat", had enjoyed a terrific first half of the season in the Premiership.

In 13 league starts – 16 appearances in total – for the club in 2023, Palma had contributed with an eye-catching five goals and nine assists – more than one goal contribution per start on average.

The 5 foot 10 wizard has created 13 'big chances' in 17 Premiership starts overall this season for Celtic, which speaks to the creative quality he has the potential to provide.

Alongside O'Riley: 9/10 star just helped secure the title for Celtic

The Hoops star justified his selection with a terrific performance at the top end of the pitch.

ByDan Emery May 16, 2024

His one goal and zero assists in the league in 2024 is a poor return, however, and Rodgers could now give him a chance to bounce back to form with a start in a pressureless game against St Mirren, which would then allow Maeda to have a breather on the bench.

Russell Martin drops big injury news on Southampton ace before play-offs

Southampton manager Russell Martin has provided a significant injury update regarding one important Saints player ahead of their Championship play-off clash with West Brom.

It was a strong end to what has largely been a positive campaign at St Mary's, but they now face the lottery of the play-offs, joining Leeds, West Brom and Norwich City in the battle to join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season.

Southampton ended up finishing in fourth place, meaning they have lined up a two-legged semi-final meeting with West Brom, as they look to get the better of the Baggies and seal a place in the final at Wembley later this month.

In order for the south coast side to have the best possible chance of returning to the top flight at the first attempt, they need as few injuries as possible, but Martin saw key striker Che Adams leave the field prematurely at home to Leeds. It was an immediate worry ahead of next Sunday's trip to the Hawthorns to take on the Baggies, putting the Scotland international in doubt for the game.

Martin drops significant Southampton news

Speaking after the Leeds game on Saturday [via the Echo], Martin gave a positive Southampton injury update regarding Adams. Clearly, the Saints boss had no intention of taking any chances, especially with their league position safe.

"He felt a bit of tightness. There is no point carrying on and risking him after that. I think he will be alright. Thankfully we also had Ross Stewart to bring on today, which was really amazing for us."

Southampton striker Che Adams.

This has to be seen as an encouraging update for Southampton, considering Russell seems confident of Adams making a swift recovery, and he does at least have a week to further work on his recovery.

The 27-year-old would be a massive loss for Saints given the fact that he scored 16 goals in the regular Championship season and netted twice in the FA Cup, also chipping in with four assists. Ally McCoist has lauded him in the past, too, which is high praise from Scottish legend, saying:

"First and foremost, we now have a striker who is a first pick every week for a very good team in the English Premier League. It’s been a long time since a Scotland manager has had that luxury. Adams has started his international career really positively and has scored in the last two games against Moldova and Denmark. Apart from that, his general play has been terrific."

Southampton can ease big injury worry by unleashing "unbelievable" star

Southampton will hope other strikers can come up trumps if this star is out injured.

ByKelan Sarson May 5, 2024

Adams' vast experience could be priceless for Southampton in the two legs against West Brom and in the final if they make it, so the hope is that he is in the starting lineup at The Hawthorns next weekend, shrugging off this current knock.

Cuiabá vence Atlético-GO em jogo atrasado e sai do Z4 do Brasileirão
