Sir Jim Ratcliffe makes contact to sign "great" Brazilian gem for Man Utd

Manchester United are interested in signing a "great player" with a big future this summer, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe making an early move to snap him up.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils are badly in need of a summer transfer window to remember, with Ratcliffe no doubt keen to back Erik ten Hag with new signings, assuming the Dutchman is still in charge at that point. A lot of players continue to be linked with summer moves to Old Trafford, and given the individuals being mentioned, it seems clear that additions are wanted all over the pitch.

For example, Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has been linked with a move, possibly being seen as a replacement for Casemiro, who may move on at the end of the season. The 23-year-old was seen as an option for Liverpool last summer but ended up staying put at his current club.

Ezri Konsa

Defensive reinforcements have also been mooted, with the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans not representing the future, and Aston Villa ace Ezri Konsa has emerged as an option to come in, having enjoyed an impressive season. He has started 29 of his side's 32 Premier League matches and is capable of shining at both centre-back and right-back.

In terms of attacking options, Real Madrid star Rodrygo has been backed to join United in the summer window, should the Brazilian decide he needs to leave the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid appear to be keen on keeping hold of him, but the potential arrival of Kylian Mbappe from Paris Saint-Germain could limit his playing time.

Man Utd in contact to sign "great player"

According to reports from Brazil [via Sport Witness], Manchester United have already made contact over a move to sign Palmeiras gem Thalys.

It is claimed that United, and by extension Ratcliffe and INEOS, have only carried out an early survey regarding the teenager, with no offer tabled yet, but that could change moving forward, even though it may "take a while". He currently has a €40m (£34.3m) release in his current deal that runs until the summer of 2026, but no clubs including United are expected to be willing to pay that much for his signature.

Thalys could very much be one for the future for United, being seen as a huge talent in Brazil, even though the 19-year-old hasn't yet made his senior debut for Palmeiras – something the Red Devils appear to be waiting for before making an offer. Eight goals in 25 appearances for the Under-20s is a promising return, though.

The attacker has been earmarked as the next Endrick – another young Brazilian with a big reputation – and journalist Rogerio Amaral has hailed him, saying:

"He’s a great player who has a lot of room for improvement. I think if he went now, he would have to be loaned to a smaller team to gain experience. In the youth categories, he is a striker who tends to be very regular but has never been tested under the pressure that is professional football."

Building for the future is essential for United, ensuring they have some of the best young talent around, so it is encouraging to see Thalys emerge as an option to come in, even though nothing feels too concrete at the moment.

West Ham’s 8/10 machine has made himself undroppable alongside Kudus

West Ham United arguably produced their finest, most exciting display of the season as they dismantled Freiburg in the Europa League last 16.

Trailing 1-0 after a testing first leg in Germany, David Moyes steadied the ship and blew his side's opponents away, unleashing their attacking skill to romp to a 5-1 aggregate victory.

West Ham United manager David Moyes

Lucas Paqueta made amends for last week's effort with the early opener, while Jarrod Bowen scored, naturally, but it was Mohammed Kudus who stole the show with a magnificent brace late into the affair to put the tie beyond doubt.

Mohamed Kudus' game vs Freiburg in numbers

Signed from Ajax for £38m last summer, Kudus has impressed with his prolific ability and electric movements on the Hammers flank but he might just have produced his finest performance to date against Freiburg.

As per Sofascore, the Ghanaian star netted twice from the left wing, his first utterly mesmerising, collecting the ball from his own half to slalom past defenders and slot home, his second a thunderous strike.

It was a moment of pure attacking brilliance and Kudus is proving to be one of the best, most enthralling acquisitions of modern memory for West Ham, now with 15 goals and five assists for the Irons.

Kudus also demonstrated his tenacious approach, winning five ground duels, making four tackles and two interceptions and clearances apiece, completing 95% of his passes to round off a near impeccable evening.

But hang on a second, we all know that Kudus is a star and that he comfortably slots into Moyes' strongest starting 11. He wasn't the only good performer on an excellent evening, with Michail Antonio now undroppable after his effort as the focal frontman.

Why Michail Antonio is now undroppable for West Ham

Antonio is less than two weeks away from his 34th birthday but his singular style at centre-forward opens up a wealth of possibilities for his peers, Bowen the notable beneficiary as he slots back into his natural right-sided position.

Michail Antonio.

Imposing and sinewed, Antonio is the perfect talisman for the likes of Kudus and Bowen to bounce off, especially when boosted by Paqueta's elite playmaking.

Next up in the Europa League, West Ham will clash against high-flying Bayer Leverkusen but with this quartet leading the charge, there is every chance that Moyes can enjoy further riches on the continent.

Antonio was handed an 8/10 match rating by the Evening Standard's Dan Kilpatrick on inarguably his best outing since returning from injury in February, with the journalist writing: 'A menace for Freiburg all evening without scoring. Put one on a plate for Kudus in the first half but the winger fired wide.'

The metrics listed above do not exactly speak of the perfect performance, but statistics spin the yarn without painting the full picture, and Antonio was indeed immense with his hold-up play and brutish presence, allowing his more dynamic and fleet-footed peers to wreak havoc.

As West Ham pull into the business end, Antonio must now be handed a regular starting berth at centre-forward, settling the balance and ensuring that the east London outfit has the fluency and poise to enjoy a successful finish to the campaign.

Man Utd could finally drop Rashford by unleashing "unpredictable" star

Manchester United will look to win their first Premier League away game since February this evening as they travel to face Bournemouth.

Earlier this season, the Cherries completely embarrassed the Red Devils, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford, which is a result that Erik ten Hag's side simply cannot afford to repeat.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag watches on.

Luckily, United go into the tie off the back of a relatively impressive 2-2 result against Liverpool, and they also won at the Vitality Stadium last season.

However, if they are to achieve a positive outcome, then a certain star must start in place of Marcus Rashford.

Marcus Rashford doesn’t make the starting lineup

Yesterday, Ten Hag gave a vital update on Rashford’s injury status after the United attacker was forced off just after the hour mark last weekend.

The Dutch boss announced that the England international had taken part in training on Thursday, and he is set to undergo a late fitness test to determine how many minutes he gets on the field.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

However, in truth, regardless of the injury blow, there’s a call for Rashford to drop to the bench anyway after his 4/10 display against Liverpool, as rated by the Manchester Evening News.

The number ten struggled to get into the game, completing just 17 passes, having zero attempts at goal, and giving the ball away 15 times, which is why the boss should ruthlessly drop him to the bench.

Ratcliffe could make a £128m signing that ends Rashford's Man Utd career

Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to make a statement signing with £128m ace.

ByTom Lever Apr 12, 2024 Antony must be unleashed by Ten Hag

There’s no two ways about it: Antony has struggled massively this season, and he’s most definitely not justified his £82m price tag so far.

Over the campaign, the Brazilian has played 25 times, but he’s failed to score a single goal, underperforming his xG by 1.70, which also indicates that he’s not had many opportunities to score.

That said, there have been signs of significant improvement in recent weeks, which all stemmed from his late equaliser against Liverpool, where he momentarily became a hero.

However, it was Antony’s performance against Chelsea that really highlighted how incredible he can be when playing with confidence, with the Manchester Evening News rating his performance an 8/10.

As you can see, the “unpredictable” winger, as dubbed by football creator Liam Canning, was absolutely electric, taking on attacking responsibility while also being influential during off-the-ball tasks.

It was during that game at Stamford Bridge that Antony picked up his first Premier League goal contribution of the season, playing an unbelievable outside-of-the-foot cross for Alejandro Garnacho’s second.

Yet, it was his ability to evade pressure and turn defence into attack that was so impressive, completing all six of his dribbles and only losing the ball nine times.

With Bournemouth inevitably playing a low block when United are attacking rather than a high line, there will be little room to work in and almost no space in behind, which would make Rashford less dangerous and Antony more likely to have an impact on the game.

Furthermore, it is important that the wingers are able to win their duels, which Antony did brilliantly against Chelsea, as during tight games, it’s those fine margin moments that can make the difference.

Overall, given Rashford’s lack of influence and current unknown injury status, Antony simply must return to the starting side, after his 8/10 display the last time he was in the XI against the Blues at Stamford Bridge.

Worth more than Amad: Man Utd will rue letting their "mini Vinicius" leave

When anticipating who could be the potential matchwinner ahead of last weekend's FA Cup thriller versus Liverpool, few would have predicted a certain Amad Diallo to be the man to steal the headlines, with the Ivorian having been on the periphery for much of his time at Manchester United.

And yet, just over three years on from his first and previously solitary goal for the club at home to AC Milan, up stepped the diminutive winger to clinch victory at the death, the former Atalanta man calmly slotting home to send Old Trafford into a frenzy.

Whether that moment of quality is the start of things to come for the 21-year-old with the Red Devils remains to be seen, yet it would be difficult to argue that he has not now cemented himself as a genuine cult hero at the club – not least for his almost comical dismissal in the aftermath of that last-gasp winner.

The problem for Amad is, however, that there is no shortage of attacking talent at United at present, with the likes of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund all there to contend with, with cementing a regular role in the side easier said than done.

It may be the case that the former Sunderland man has to depart permanently in order to truly thrive, with the case of young Largie Ramazani showcasing the benefits of starting afresh…

Largie Ramazani's time at Man Utd

There will rightly be many reading this asking the question, who?

The promising Belgian isn't exactly a household name for many of a United persuasion, with the 5 foot 6 ace having left the club through the back door back in 2020, after departing on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract.

Largie Ramazani

Previously on the books at Charlton Athletic, Ramazani made the move to Manchester in the summer of 2017, going on to swiftly impress in the club's youth ranks after contributing 12 goals and assists in 30 games at U18 level.

A promotion into the U21 fold also proved fruitful as the fleet-footed ace bagged 11 goals and contributed a further two assists in only 18 outings for the U23 side, with such rampant form culminating in a senior bow in November 2019.

The one-time Anderlecht ace was brought on off the bench during the UEFA Europa League clash with Astana, with then-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielding a side largely full of young debutants – and Jesse Lingard – for that eventual 2-1 loss.

Unfortunately for Ramazani, no more opportunities arose under Solskjaer, and despite the offer of a new deal, he opted to leave on a free, ultimately joining Spanish second-division side Almeria that summer.

Largie Ramazani's current market value

It is fair to say that such a move has paid off handsomely as far as the 23-year-old is concerned, with United perhaps ruing their inability to keep hold of the forward, as well as at having allowed him to depart for nothing.

Since making the move to Spain, the "explosive winger" – as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig – has scored 21 goals and registered nine assists in 121 games in all competitions, having enjoyed a particularly fruitful 2023/24 campaign thus far.

Now in his second season in La Liga, the versatile talent – who can operate all across the front line, albeit while typically featuring off the left – has scored three goals and registered five assists in the division, with that tally of eight goal involvements matching what Alejandro Garnacho has achieved in the Premier League this term.

With his "electric pace & acceleration", Ramazani could well have been something of a "counter-attacking weapon" under Ten Hag – as per Kulig – having also been dubbed "The Mini Vinicius" due to his dazzling displays in Spain.

rayan-cherki-vinicius-junior-newcastle-opinion

To be likened to a Real Madrid star who is arguably the "best player in the world" – according to Carlo Ancelotti – is some praise indeed, with that only reinforcing the idea that United have potentially made a hefty mistake.

Such has been Ramazani's rise, the former Belgium U21 international is now said to be worth around €15m (£13m), according to CIES Football Observatory, which is in fact far ahead of the Red Devils' £37m signing, Amad – €5m (£4m).

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Having allowed the current Almeria speedster to move on in the same year in which the club spent big on Amad's capture – prior to his arrival in Manchester in January 2021 – perhaps United could have saved themselves millions by doing more to keep the rising star at Old Trafford instead.

Tottenham eyeing new midfield star with club likely to lose him for nothing

Tottenham are now eyeing one club's star midfielder this summer as they become increasingly likely to lose him for nothing.

Spurs looking to shore up midfield for Postecoglou

As the future of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg seems far away from Spurs, with the Dane's contract expiring next year, it is believed that Ange Postecoglou could look to shore up his midfield with a replacement more suited to his style.

BBC pundit says Levy needs to sign £60m striker for Tottenham this summer

It’s a deal which would take Spurs to the “next level”.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 6, 2024

Hojbjerg has featured very regularly under Postecoglou and made real contributions, but the vast majority of his appearances have come from the substitute's bench. Fabrizio Romano backs that the 28-year-old could depart N17 in search of more game time.

In terms of the names linked to potentially succeed Hojbjerg ahead of 2024/2025, the likes of Chelsea star Conor Gallagher are attracting interest from Spurs.

Atalanta midfielder Ederson and Everton's James Garner have also been mentioned as Tottenham targets in the last two months, with technical director Johan Lange seemingly shortlisting Gallagher alternatives in the event he signs a new Chelsea deal.

"Garner is probably a Gallagher alternative that Tottenham might look at," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport in February.

"Obviously, it's very early days to be analysing the summer transfer window. We know that Tottenham are still waiting to see if Conor Gallagher does become available because there is a feeling still that he might and the longer that contract situation goes on, the longer they will believe that something might be able to happen. But if Conor Gallagher does end up signing a contract extension, they need to have a list of names they immediately turn to. And I guess James Garner kind of fits the profile somewhat so yeah, an interesting one to look out for."

You cannot rule out new targets appearing on a weekly basis as we slowly approach the summer window's opening, and a name now being floated by the press is Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi.

The 53-cap Nigerian has made 26 Championship appearances this season, scoring two goals and five assists. These numbers would be greater if he hadn't been ruled out from December-March through injury, with Ndidi contributing effectively during Leicester's chase for promotion.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season, and according to HITC, Tottenham are a potential landing spot for him this summer.

Tottenham eyeing Ndidi move with Leicester likely to lose him

Indeed, Leicester are "increasingly likely" to lose Ndidi for nothing, and this has alerted Lange and co. Spurs are said to be eyeing a free move for Ndidi alongside a host of other top-flight sides, and he could be a cost-effective option to succeed Hojbjerg.

“He is an incredible player," said former Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers.

"The offensive players get the credit but he does the dirty work. He has this brain for the game, where he can smell danger and always finds himself there. The timing of his challenge is very good and he’s up there with the top players at winning the ball back."

Bumrah set to return as SL look to end barren run against India

It has been more than a decade since Sri Lanka last won a bilateral series, in any format, against India

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando04-Jan-20205:10

Keep an eye out for the return of Bumrah and Dhawan

Big PictureLasith Malinga has a problem. He has captained Sri Lanka to a World T20 title, but that was way back in 2014. Now, almost six years later, there are serious doubts over his leadership. Since he took over as captain again, in 2019, Sri Lanka have lost nine matches under him, and won only once. There’s no doubt he’s the best player in the side – that one victory came in the match in which he took four wickets in four balls for the second time in his limited-overs career. But can he get the best out of the ten remaining players in the side? Sri Lanka are a relatively young team. Malinga has as much T20 nous as anybody. But is he a competent manager of inexperienced players?Malinga has another problem. Lately, India haven’t lost many series to Sri Lanka. In fact, India have not lost a bilateral series to Sri Lanka – in any format – in more than ten years. In T20Is, Sri Lanka at least have the bragging rights of having defeated India in a World T20 final in 2014. But where Sri Lanka were serious rivals in the 90s and the aughts, India have more recently begun considering Sri Lanka matches a low-profile fixture. Often, they rest their regular captain. This time, they have rested their batsman of 2019, Rohit Sharma. Can the visitors turn the tables in 2020? Can a favoured opposition prod him back into wicket-taking form?Lasith Malinga and Isuru Udana celebrate•Associated PressAngelo Mathews hasn’t played a T20I since August 2018. The reason? Well, his batting isn’t particularly devastating anymore, and injuries have dictated that he can’t bowl much. He has been bowling in the nets in the approach to this series, however, and that may explain why he has been picked in the squad again, after such a long hiatus. If he does bowl, he could offer that crucial control with the new ball that Sri Lanka have been yearning for, while letting Malinga save his overs until late in the innings. If he only bats, Sri Lanka will hope he captures his best hitting form from years gone by. Australia attack 'can compete with any era' – Glenn McGrath

Australia have a bowling attack to compare to “any era”, Glenn McGrath has said, as the Test team targets a clean sweep of the summer powered by the performances of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon. The season began with talk of whether Steven Smith could continue his Ashes feats (Neil Wagner has stopped that), then moved on to David Warner’s run-glut against Pakistan and the emergence of Marnus Labuschagne as a world-class No. 3. Through all of that, the excellence of Australia with ball in hand has continued unabated. They have conceded over 300 just twice – Pakistan’s 335 in Brisbane is currently the highest opposition total of the summer – while New Zealand failed to cross 200 in the first three innings of the current series. The individual returns of the five bowlers this season make for impressive reading: Starc 25 wickets at 16.96, Lyon 17 wickets at 27.94, Cummins 16 wickets at 25.56, Hazlewood 11 wickets at 20.00 and Pattinson six wickets at 11.50.Starc, who began the summer outside of the Test XI, has reaffirmed his Test credentials while Cummins has consolidated his position as the No, 1 bowler in the world. Hazlewood has missed the final two Tests of the season after picking up a hamstring injury in Perth, which gave Pattinson his chance in Melbourne, and he is set to play back-to-back Tests for the first since returning to the Test side during the Ashes. Who misses out when they are all fit will be a tough call for the selectors, although it’s precisely that depth available that gives the feeling of Australia building a dominance that can last.McGrath was part of one of Australia’s greatest attacks when he joined forces with Jason Gillespie, Brett Lee and Shane Warne, and he believes this group has the same attributes.”They are right up there, without a doubt, their stats prove that,” McGrath said on the eve of the annual Pink Test at the SCG which is used to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation. “They are forming an attack that can compete with any era of Australian cricket.”That spell on the [third] day [at the MCG] with Pat Cummins and James Pattinson, the way they bowled in tandem, was as good a fast bowling as you’ll see anywhere in the world. To have Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as well, four quality bowlers, throw in Nathan Lyon as well, it’s as good a bowling attack as we’ve had. A lot people say New Zealand has been disappointing but I think a lot of that has been because of the way our bowlers have bowled. In Australian conditions they are tough to face, they will be tough to face anywhere in the world but especially at home.”Glenn McGrath reckons Australia’s attack is as good as any they’ve had•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The bowling attack came together well before the events of Newlands and even during the tough times Australia were generally able to field a strong bowling unit. They were repelled by a world-class India batting line-up last season – and did not have the volume of runs to work with, which has been the luxury this season – then during the Ashes the horses-for-courses approach meant a different collection each match, but this season there has been a consistency to the selection barring the Hazlewood injury, which in itself has highlighted the riches on offer with Pattinson’s potency.”I think it’s pretty exciting that we can continually put three or four big strong fast bowlers on the park,” Tim Paine said. “It’s not something we can take for granted, we’ve got to keep working away and I’m sure Cricket Australia are behind the scenes, trying to develop more. We’ve just lost Peter Siddle who has been a great influence on that bowling group, again we’re lucky that you’ve got your Hazlewoods and your James Pattinsons, Mitchell Starcs, that have played a lot of Tests.”I think at the moment the three or four we’re able to get on the park consistently are as a group of bowlers are right up there with as good as we’ve had. There’s no doubt walking out to bat against our attack right now is a difficult prospect for even the best players in the world.”For those facing the onslaught it has been a daunting prospect with rarely any relief in sight whether with the old ball or new. “It’s been an immense challenge,” Tom Latham said. “It’s been an enjoyable one, yes we haven’t quite had the results from a batting point of view, but to test ourselves in these conditions against four world-class bowlers, it has been a challenge and that’s the standard we want to reach.”After this series concludes in Sydney, Australia’s next Test assignment is two matches in Bangladesh in June – which will be a good examination of the adaptability of the quick bowlers chosen – before the next Australian season which includes the mouth-watering prospect of the head-to-head with India’s stellar attack, including Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami, who proved too good last season. A lot can happen in a year – just ask this Australia team – but right now that has the prospect of a great tussle.
