Toby Bailey, Keaton Jennings give Lancashire edge

Lancashire assumed control of their top-of-the-table Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash with Glamorgan after the opening day at Colwyn Bay. Tom Bailey and Danny Lamb claimed four wickets apiece as the Red Rose bowled the hosts out for 257 before reaching 85 for 1 in reply – a deficit of 172 runs.It could have been worse for Glamorgan but for on-loan Samit Patel, who hit a half-century on his debut and combined expertly with the tail, most significantly Lukas Carey who crashed his way to fifty, after the hosts had been in disarray at 145 for 8. But Lancashire finished the day content with their work with Keaton Jennings four runs short of a half-century and Josh Bohannon on 6.Glamorgan opted to bat on a ground which is traditionally batsman friendly, but they might have regretted their decision after slipping to 12 for 2 in the seventh over. Nick Selman and Shaun Marsh, playing his first Championship game after breaking his arm during the World Cup, were both dismissed by Bailey who bowled an accurate opening spell.Lancashire were without Graham Onions who suffered a hamstring injury before play started, but the other four seamers compensated for his absence by taking three wickets before lunch.Charles Hemphrey and Billy Root began the recovery by adding 50 for the fourth wicket, but from the first ball after lunch Root became Bailey’s third victim. Hemphrey went on to score a patient 54 with eight boundaries before he became the fourth lbw victim of the innings – his dismissal starting a collapse of four wickets for only six runs.Patel, who has been signed on loan by Glamorgan from Nottinghamshire for Championship games only until the end of the season, watched from the other end as Chris Cooke and Graham Wagg feathered catches to the wicketkeeper while Ruaidhri Smith was bowled first ball playing back when he should have been forward. Two wickets were taken by the young allrounder Lamb, who had earlier taken his first Championship wicket when he dismissed David Lloyd leg before. This is Lamb’s fifth first-class game and he ended with the creditable figures of 15-2-70-4.Glamorgan were struggling at 145 for 8 but the home team were then indebted to Patel and the tail with the last two wickets adding a further 112 runs. Patel and Carey shared 60 for the ninth wicket, before Patel feel to Bailey for 54, but Carey bludgeoned fifty from 29 balls and was undefeated on 51 when Michael Hogan, who had struck an equally rapid 32, was last man out. The final pair added 52 as Glamorgan gained two batting points.Openers Jennings and Alex Davies made a steady start for Lancashire with the latter striking early boundaries. Jennings was troubled by Hogan who had a confident lbw appeal turned down by the umpire, the ball pitching marginally outside leg stump. The opening pair put on 59 in 17 overs before Smith, in his first Championship game of the season, dismissed Davies leg before for 32, not long before the weather intervened. Play resumed with no further alarms for the visitors who are well-placed to capitalise on their opening day’s work.

Spotlight on Sri Lanka's youngsters with series on the line

The relatively modest performances of New Zealand’s fringe fast bowlers places them under some scrutiny as well

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando02-Sep-2019

Kusal Mendis went after the bowlers in the Powerplay•Associated Press

Big PictureThere are no certainties when it comes to the T20 captaincy, but for now Lasith Malinga is the man entrusted with the build up to the T20 World Cup next year, and he’s clearly in a mood to experiment. In the first T20I, Malinga wanted to have a look at the batting. So although he acknowledged that bowling first might have been smarter (given the difficulty involved in defending a score with a wet ball), he wanted to give his young batting order a free hand. The results were hit-and-miss. Kusal Mendis’ re-ascension to the top of the batting order clearly worked, with the batsman producing the best innings of the evening. Others, such as Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando, though, failed to fire.Malinga is unlikely to make wholesale changes after just one loss, but the batsmen in particular, who failed to make a significant impact on Sunday, will be on notice. The likes of Danushka Gunathilaka await a chance to get into the XI.New Zealand, meanwhile, showcased the depth in their batting order – Ross Taylor, Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner and Daryl Mitchell all providing important innings, after the top order had allowed the required rate to near 11 as early as the eighth over. While their established bowlers – Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi and Santer – all produced good performances, the relatively modest performances of the fringe fast bowlers will place them under some scrutiny. Seth Rance, in particular, leaked 58 runs in his four overs, and didn’t take a wicket.Form guideNew Zealand WWLWW (completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka LLLLLIn the spotlightEver since Ross Taylor moved to the lower-middle order in T20Is, he has been both more prolific, and more explosive. Where he had struck at 117 and averaged 23.22 at No. 4 for example (where he has most-often batted), he has struck at 131.39 at Nos. 5 and 6, and averages 38.18. On Sunday, hitting 48 off 29, he played exactly the kind of innings he’s in that lower position for. If the top order fails, New Zealand still have a player of the explosive power and calibre of Taylor to come. He is, essentially, their middle-order insurance.Ross Taylor keeps his eyes on the ball•AFP

Isuru Udana has just been named one of the marquee players for South Africa’s Mzansi Super League, and with the bat on Sunday, he showed exactly why, hitting two sixes off the first two balls he faced, in the last over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Having first emerged in 2009, Udana spent years out of the Sri Lanka side but used that time wisely, honing not just his batting, but also his fielding. Even in a match against New Zealand, who have some of the best fielders on the planet, Udana can count himself among the best on the field. He is primarily chosen for his bowling however, so if he is to firm up his place in the side for that T20 World Cup, he will need to shake off his 0 for 38 off 3.3 overs from Sunday and show himself to be a more capable fast-bowling ally to Malinga.Team newsSri Lanka may be tempted to bring Danushka Gunathilaka into the side. But they’ll likely go with the same XI.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Mendis, 2 Kusal Perera (wk), 3 Avishka Fernando, 4 Niroshan Dickwella, 5 Shehan Jayasuriya, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Akila Dananjaya, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt), 11 Kasun RajithaWith only 13 players available since a thumb fracture ruled Lockie Ferguson out of the series, New Zealand don’t have a lot of options. They will likely play the same side as well.New Zealand (possible): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Tim Seifert (wk), 4 Colin de Grandhomme, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 Daryl Mitchell, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Scott Kuggeleijn, 9 Seth Rance, 10 Tim Southee (capt), 11 Ish SodhiPitch and conditionsThe Pallekele surface on Sunday had substantial turn, so expect that to be the case again. That wasn’t to say there was nothing for the quicks though, with Tim Southee and Lasith Malinga the two best bowlers from either side. Rain may again interrupt.Stats and trivia Ross Taylor averages 39.28 and strikes at 135 in Sri Lanka – better numbers than any other country he’s played in, including New Zealand. Isuru Udana has scored 147 runs at a strike rate of 184 this year. He’s played four innings and been dismissed only once. Lasith Malinga needs one more wicket to become the first bowler to 100 T20 international wickets. The next-closest active player is Shakib Al Hasan, who has 88 wickets.

Paul Robinson thrilled as Tottenham eye £60m Premier League star for Ange

Tottenham have been told that they could make a "huge statement" by signing a "next level" player for Ange Postecoglou.

Forwards linked with summer moves to Spurs

Ahead of the next transfer window, Spurs' recruitment team have wasted no time identifying potential forward targets.

Ex-Spurs scout urges Levy to sign "nightmare" with connections to Tottenham

He could be ideal for one particular role.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 27, 2024

Indeed, Barcelona star Raphinha is one name to be mentioned as a player who Spurs are exploring (Paul O'Keefe), with other reports claiming Tottenham are willing to bid as much as £60 million for the Brazilian.

The Lilywhites are also believed to be in the market for a new number nine, despite the fine form of Richarlison in recent months. Spurs are yet to fully replace club-record goalscorer Harry Kane, who joined Bayern Munich last summer, and they apparently hold a keen interest in Brentford striker Ivan Toney among others.

Sticking with stars from England's top flight, Wolves winger Pedro Neto is said to be on Tottenham's list as well. The 23-year-old, who's bagged an incredible nine assists already this season, is on the verge of double figures in that department and has contributed to 11 Wolves goals overall.

Spurs apparently have him on their radar ahead of this summer, despite reports he could cost around £60 million.

"Pedro Neto is somebody on their radar," said journalist Dean Jones, to GiveMeSport.

"Raphinha has been mentioned as well. Nico Williams, at Athletic Bilbao, is another player that they're continuing to monitor. It will be interesting. Pedro Neto will be a very difficult one to get because of the competition that there will be to actually sign him.

"But Tottenham have signed a couple of players recently, that they've done well to get through the door, and they will believe that anything is possible."

Robinson thrilled as Spurs allegedly eye Neto

Speaking to Tottenham News, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has raved over the possibility of Spurs singing Neto, calling it a would-be "huge statement".

“He’s better than [Timo] Werner. He’s better than [Brennan] Johnson. He’s better than [Giovani] Lo Celso," said Robinson.

Wolves forward Pedro Neto in Premier League action.

"You could argue that he’d probably play ahead of Kulusevski. He wouldn’t play ahead of Sonny [Heung-min] or Richarlison as a striker but he is that next-level player and if Spurs are to go on and are to back Ange then to bring in a player like Neto would be a huge statement."

Another pundit in talkSPORT's Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking to Football Insider last year, also praised Neto's "blistering pace".

“They [Arsenal] need proper backup for Saka and Martinelli. Trossard, Vieira and Smith Rowe – these are all good players, but there’s no one with that blistering pace," said Agbonlahor.

"Neto has shown that. He’s had a tough two years with injury, but he’s got that. He would suit Arsenal perfectly if they could get him in.”

"Oh my god" – Pundit reacts to contract news he’s heard on "amazing" Leeds man

After a shaky start saw them win just two of their opening seven games, Leeds United now sit second in the Championship and look set to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, leading to pay rises for several key figures.

Leeds march on towards promotion

Thanks in part to Southampton's loss at home to Hull City on Tuesday night, Leeds now look favourites for automatic promotion and are showing little signs of slowing down anytime soon. A 2-0 win away to Plymouth last weekend made it eight league wins on the bounce for the West Yorkshire outfit, with Daniel Farke's men seemingly getting better every time they step onto the pitch.

This 2023 Leeds target now has more Championship goals than Rutter

The Whites were reportedly keen on a deal to sign the second division starlet.

ByDan Emery Feb 21, 2024

Part of the success has been getting a tune out of previously problematic players. The majority of Leeds' fans thought they had seen the last of Wilfred Gnonto when he refused to take part in the early passages of the season, but with five goals in his last five games, the Italian has forced his way back into the hearts of the Elland Road faithful.

Wilfried Gnonto for Leeds United.

Gnonto has forged a partnership with the fifteen-goal sensation, Crysencio Summerville, as well as record signing Georginio Rutter, to help their side score almost two goals per game. Whilst the talent is clearly there, these performances would not be possible without the man in the dugout, who now looks set for a pay rise.

McAvennie reacts to latest Leeds contract news

Speaking to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie said that Farke is more than deserving of a new contract at Leeds after transforming the fortunes of the team.

Daniel Farke.

With news of a fresh contract for Farke first revealed last week, it is clear that the 49ers are eager to tie down their manager if they return to the Premier League this season. The 47-year-old would be in line for a big pay rise for guiding the Whites back to the promised land, as would several players, with rumours of new deals for the likes of Summerville and Patrick Bamford.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

With a win percentage of 63% and picking up an impressive two points per game, Leeds look on track to overcome a challenging start to the campaign and charge back to the topflight. Having won the second division with Norwich City on two previous occasions, there is no doubt whether Farke possesses the pedigree to do it for a third time.

As we reach the business end of the Championship season, perhaps the promise of a pay rise is just the extra incentive Farke and his team need to get over the line. With thirteen games still to go, including a tie against league leaders, Leicester, it is very much all to play for but as it stands, Leeds look in a good position to come out on top.

Scotland's hopes of progressing from the group stages at the European Championships for the first time in history were crushed by a last-minute Hungary winner in their final match. Steve Clarke's side had just 17 shots across their three games, the joint-lowest tally since the groups were introduced in 1980, equalling Northern Ireland's record in 2016.

Scotland's tournament never got going following their 5-1 defeat to hosts Germany on the opening night. They will head home thinking about what could have been, but also with a sense of relief that Hungarian player Barnabas Varga is conscious following a worrying collision with goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Fabrizio Romano hands Man Utd potential transfer boost over Messi-like ace

Manchester United's pursuit of a Lionel Messi-like star could have been given a recent boost, according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Man Utd transfer news

This season has once again highlighted the improvements that need to be made to United's squad this summer, with Erik ten Hag's side falling well behind the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal. It seems clear that Sir Jim Ratcliffe seems keen to address the transfer situation as quickly as possible in the summer as he looks to make his presence felt while in charge of football-related activity.

Girona left-back Miguel Gutierrez is among those linked with a summer switch to Old Trafford, perhaps with him being seen as a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw, who turns 29 years of age later this year having struggled with injury problems in the past.

Ten Hag could feel that defensive additions are also needed, with the likes of Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire past their best, and Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva is believed to be one primary target for the Red Devils. Still only 20, he has become a fixture of his current side's starting XI, making 21 Primeira Liga starts this season.

Sporting CP favourite Goncalo Inacio is another potential target, with the 22-year-old one of Portuguese football's brightest young prospects, having already racked up 157 appearances for his current club. This season, he has enjoyed an 88.3% pass completion rate in the league, as well as winning an average of two aerial duels per game across eight Europa League appearances.

Man Utd have scouted Roony Bardghji

Speaking to CaughtOffside, Romano admitted that Manchester United have scouted Roony Bardghji extensively, with the 18-year-old a huge talent at FC Copenhagen.

Kobenhavn forward Roony Bardghji.

However, while he started well this season, he has not featured for the club in recent weeks. Romano provided some insight into why this is – and it could hand United a helping hand in their potential transfer pursuit:

"According to my information, it’s because the player has no intention of signing a new deal at Copenhagen. This is the situation as of now, his current contract expires in December 2025. So it means that if nothing changes in the summer, he will be available with 18 months left on his contract. Already clubs like Tottenham for sure, but also Manchester United and Barcelona, have sent scouts multiple times to follow the player’s progress."

United know all about Bardghji from earlier this season, with his late winner against them for Copenhagen in the Champions League proving to be hugely damaging to Ten Hag's side's hopes of getting out of their group.

The teenage maestro has even been dubbed the "Swedish Messi", which says so much about his natural ability, and a huge future looks to be ahead of him. If United could snap him up over others, it could be a masterstroke over time, as they look to acquire the best young European talent around.

Finch's career-best 188* helps Victoria ace 305 chase

Australia’s ODI captain smashed 11 fours and 14 sixes as Victoria chased down their target at a canter

Alex Malcolm01-Oct-2019A sensational career-best 188 not out from Aaron Finch dominated Victoria’s commanding chase of 305 against Queensland at the Junction Oval.Finch clubbed 11 fours and 14 sixes to post his highest List A score, and Victoria’s best in one-day cricket, as they cruised to their target with 34 balls and nine wickets in hand. He shared century stands with Sam Harper and Marcus Harris to help inflict Queensland’s first defeat of the tournament and overshadow Usman Khawaja’s second straight century earlier in the day.Just two days after Victoria’s top order capitulated against the same attack, Finch’s power-packed performance, in conjunction with a change in batting order, helped the home side turn the tables on Queensland.Harper came into the side at the expense of Will Pucovski and was promoted to open alongside Finch, while Harris was shifted to No. 3 for the first time in his List A career. Finch and Harper put on 136 in 17.5 overs to put Queensland under huge pressure with Finch racing to his fastest domestic half-century in just 29 balls with six fours and three sixes. He lost Harper, who fell for a run-a-ball 44 trying to ramp Marnus Labuschagne over short fine, but Finch’s range-hitting session didn’t stop as he peppered the windows of Cricket Victoria’s administration building and the heritage-listed grandstands. He reached his third domestic one-day century for Victoria in 73 balls and then kept rolling to his second score 150-plus and his highest List A score. He was dropped by wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson on 129, but it was a difficult chance high to his right off Billy Stanlake on 129.Finch’s demolition gave Harris a chance to spend some time at the crease. He made the most of a huge let-off, after he was dropped by Labuschagne at cover on 4, to cruise to an unbeaten half-century. Finch finished the game with his 14th six in the 45th over, the second-most sixes in an Australian domestic one-day game.Victoria looked set to chase a far bigger score as a sense of déjà vu set in when Khawaja and Sam Heazlett exploded with another impressive opening stand. Just two days after putting on 185 against Victoria they added 118 in 17 overs on another superb batting track.Heazlett raced to his fourth consecutive half-century of the tournament but he again failed to turn it into three-figures, misjudging the length of Jon Holland to be trapped lbw for 69 from just 51 balls.Khawaja converted his second successive century, but he did ride his luck. He was dropped by Harper behind the stumps on 22, a relatively straight forward chance off the inside edge, and survived a huge lbw shout on 49 off Holland. The umpire felt Khawaja got just outside the line attempting a paddle sweep but replays showed he may have been hit in line with off stump. He was dropped again on 104, with Matthew Short unable to hold onto a diving chance at backward point. The innings slowed a touch when Victoria utilized the offspin of both Short and Glenn Maxwell to the left-handed pair of Khawaja and Matt Renshaw. They added 83 but it took 91 balls before Khawaja fell trying to up the ante with seven overs to go.Renshaw passed 50 for the second time this season Queensland were able to creep just past 300 on a surface that certainly slowed up towards the back end of the innings. In the end, it was well under par
