Olympian Ginn to challenge fast bowler management

With his background in rowing, one of the new high performance heads at Cricket Australia may look to do things differently says his Tasmania boss

Daniel Brettig19-Jun-2019New Cricket Australia high performance chief Drew Ginn may be set to dictate a change of course for the management of the nation’s fast bowlers, drawing lessons from his multi-Olympic gold medal winning time in rowing. As a member of the “Oarsome Foursome” and subsequent high performance work in both rowing and cycling, Ginn developed ideas that run contrary to those prevalent in the way that CA and the states have managed fast bowlers in recent years, namely the preference for controlled workloads of training, and match bowling at high intensity.Instead, Ginn can be expected to further investigate whether or not cricket should adopt the sorts of ideas used in rowing, whereby higher consistent training loads at lower intensity are used and then built up for specific moments, whether they be selection trials or international competitions such as the Olympics. Nick Cummins, chief executive of Cricket Tasmania where Ginn led the high performance program for the past two years, told ESPNcricinfo that the 44-year-old would not be afraid to challenge current conventions.”He’s got some strong views on fast bowler management probably based out of his experience with rowing,” Cummins said. “For example in rowing he’s said rowers would never row flat out aside from in races or maybe the race leading up to the big race. So he finds it interesting that the way a fast bowler’s managed at the moment is that when you train you only train flat out and you’re limited in your amount of training.”One of the discussions is do you bowl 1000 balls at 50% rather than 50 balls at 100%, because in rowing you’d do most of your rowing at 50%, 30% or 10%. Of other sports that understand back injuries, rowing would be right up there, and ultimately his view is putting load through a body at all times is important, which kind of links back to that county cricket idea, Courtney Walsh saying ‘I never stopped bowling, that’s why I didn’t get injured’. Drew’s view is never stop bowling, but just don’t bowl at 100% all the time. The current convention is only bowl at 100% and then rest. It’ll be interesting to see where that goes.”Management of fast bowlers has been a problematic area for CA over numerous years, with near constant debate over the approaches to be taken. Ginn has already made his presence felt by expressing his views at national high performance conferences, something Cummins had been looking for when he went searching for a new head of high performance in Tasmania in 2017 at a time the state was performing poorly.Mitchell Starc in his delivery stride•Getty Images

“It became apparent that we were really going to have to have a game changer in terms of the type of person to bring in,” Cummins said. “Drew was in the mix with a number of other candidates but when I met with him he was clearly the best. Not so much for expertise around cricket, but certainly expertise around high performance and a real system leader. That’s key with that job, whether Tasmania or Australia, is we don’t need another head coach to do their job. A head of high performance needs to manage the system and effectively coach the coaches.”While cricket knowledge was far from the forefront of Ginn’s qualities, Cummins argued that elite performance was now such a broad area that working collaboratively with experts and managing them effectively was as important. The balance CA have achieved through hiring Ginn and the far more cricket-steeped Ben Oliver as head of national teams will make for an intriguing next few years in terms of decision-making.”His knowledge of cricket when he started was limited to backyard cricket so he’s had to start from scratch, but in many ways that’s been quite useful because he’s come in with a very open mind and also come in from a perspective of not having a fixed view on how things should be,” Cummins said. “Drew’s attitude was ask lots of questions, gain an understanding of the oddities of cricket, but principally his job is to ensure that Adam Griffith and then Sally-Ann Briggs [the coaches] had the support and direction to succeed and more broadly working with the physios, strength and conditioning, umpires, premier cricket. In all instances there’s a strong reliance on having subject matter experts, and he isn’t that.”But given the breadth of high performance anyway, even if he was Greg Chappell, he still wouldn’t have expertise around women’s cricket, strength and conditioning or umpiring or player welfare. Anyone who runs an organisation is going to have an area they’re very strong and areas they don’t know anything about. So consequently what you’re looking for is a great leader, not a great coach.”Resourcefulness is something else that Ginn has brought from a background in rowing, a sport that despite its storied history and Olympic presence is largely amateur and self-funded. Cummins recalled how the construction of an indoor marquee to allow Tasmania’s players to train through the middle of a harsh Hobart winter was the result of a logical tradeoff.”He’s always looking at how we can deliver something so he doesn’t accept no for an answer,” Cummins said. “The marquee was a good example, it was about $50,000 and I said ‘we just don’t have that money’ and he came back and said ‘righto, the players are prepared to forego their pre-season trip, which is about $50,000, if they can have the marquee instead’. So I said ‘okay if you’re prepared to be flexible on that then let’s do it’.”He’s had that attitude to 30 or 40 different parts of the system. He’ll take that approach at the national level, particular coming from a sport where money is at an absolute premium. He’s always amazed and envious of the resources that professional cricketers have compared to rowers who are largely amateur and largely self-funded. I think he’ll use resources very responsibly, and ensure cricket goes onwards and upwards.”

Journalist shares key detail on how Chelsea could decide to sack Pochettino

Chelsea supporters have been handed a "key" update on manager Mauricio Pochettino and his future at the club, as chairman Todd Boehly and senior Stamford Bridge chiefs could decide to part company on one condition.

Pressure on Pochettino after dismal Premier League defeats

The Argentine has failed to steer Chelsea's ship on course so far, with the two-time Champions League winners undergoing yet another disappointing Premier League campaign despite serious investment off the field.

Manager's agents now pushing hard for him to replace Pochettino at Chelsea

The west Londoners are enduring another disappointing campaign.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 7, 2024

Their 4-2 loss to Wolves last weekend has seen them drop below Gary O'Neil's side and into the bottom half of the table. Chelsea's dismal home defeat, their second in as many games after they were also bested by Liverpool at Anfield, highlights glaring issues in Pochettino's squad which he must attempt to resolve quickly.

“We are not good enough [today],” said Pochettino after Wolves.

“Myself, also. I’m responsible for this situation. What we showed today was not good enough. We didn’t manage the situation properly and of course no one can be safe. I don’t want to come here and say I am the best. We’re all responsible.

“The players need to take responsibility like I take responsibility. At the moment we’re not matching the history of the club. That’s true. We need to accept it, be critical but we cannot give up. We’ll work hard to change. If it’s not working in this way, we need to move on and find a different solution."

Some reports have even suggested that high-ranking Chelsea official Behdad Eghbali wants to hire Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso as a replacement for Pochettino, with the former Spurs boss running out of time to make a success of his reign.

Jose Mourinho is also said to be keeping a watchful eye on Pochettino's situation, as the big-name manager's agents lobby "hard" for him to be considered as a potential Pochettino successor (Simon Phillips).

Journalist shares "key" detail in Pochettino sack update at Chelsea

Writing for Football Insider, journalist Pete O'Rourke says Chelsea could sack Pochettino if they lose to Liverpool at Wembley, saying that the 90 minutes will be "key" in determining the Argentine's future.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino

Boehly and co have invested over £1 billion since Clearlake Capital's takeover from Roman Abramovich in 2022, but their plethora of marquee signings are yet to produce a run of consistent results or eye-catching football.

Graham Potter was handed his P45 last season after failing to make the most of Chelsea's expensively assembled squad, and if Pochettino doesn't turn the tide soon, it appears the 51-year-old could suffer a similar fate.

Liverpool could make a surprise call to solve Szoboszlai’s injury blow

Liverpool have had an incredible season across all competitions throughout the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign thus far.

The Reds have lost just two Premier League games all season and sit on top of the table with 51 points, putting them two ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

Liverpool's second Premier League loss of the season came on Sunday as they tasted a 3-1 defeat to fellow title rivals, Arsenal. Since Mikel Arteta's appointment at the north-London club, there has been something of a rivalry developed between them.

Arteta even took it as far as playing Liverpool's trademark 'You'll Never Walk Alone' song at one of his The Gunners' training sessions a number of seasons ago in order to prepare his side for the fabled Anfield atmosphere.

During Sunday's clash, one of Liverpool's key players this season was absent from the squad due to injury. That player being Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungary international has been one of the Reds' most consistent players this season.

The importance of Dominik Szoboszlai in Liverpool's team

The attacking-midfielder joined Liverpool in the summer for a fee worth around £60m and, since his arrival, he has been one of the first names on Klopp's team sheet. According to Sofascore, in just the Premier League alone this season, the 23-year-old has averaged a rating of 7.28.

Szoboszlai has played a total of 28 games for the Reds across all competitions thus far and has managed to contribute to a total of nine goals during that time.

Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai.

However, Klopp is set to be without the 23-year-old for a number of games with him potentially even missing out on the Carabao Cup Final which is set to take place on the 25th of February.

This undeniably leaves a hole within Liverpool's squad which needs to be filled to a similar standard that Szoboszlai has shown throughout the season thus far.

Hungarian journalist disputes media reports on Dominik Szoboszlai injury

The bad news continues at Anfield but various media outlets have conflicting reports.

ByTom Coates Feb 6, 2024

Although players such as Thiago are returning to the squad, Cody Gakpo is a player who Klopp could look towards to fill in for Szoboszlai during his absence. The Netherlands international joined the Reds in January 2023 following a stellar World Cup campaign.

The former PSV man scored three goals in the group stages and played a large chunk of his country's time in the tournament. Although many clubs were vying for his transfer at the time, the 24-year-old chose to represent Liverpool.

Why Cody Gakpo is one of Liverpool's most versatile players

Since arriving at Anfield, he has been one of the Reds' most reliable players and has contributed to 24 goals in just 58 games. In addition, in those games, he has played in an array of positions, including centre-midfield.

Despite only being deployed in the centre of the park nine times thus far throughout his career, the Dutchman's versatility and adaptability to play anywhere across the attack is unmatched. Gakpo has spoken of his versatile nature himself and stated he thinks his season has 'gone well.'

"Obviously I've played in a few different positions – striker, midfield and left wing, I think I can do better, obviously," he said.

"You want to do better every day and become a better player all the time. But I think it went well and it can be better as well. It's just about working hard to become a better player. Last season I played almost every game as a striker. This season, [I have played] as a striker or a midfielder.

Liverpool player Cody Gakpo.

"I just focus on those two positions really, and then just show what I can do and try to be the best player I can be."

Gakpo has shown his commitment to the squad and evidently sees himself as a 'fix' to Klopp's headache. He could well be deployed in the centre of the park in the coming weeks to fulfil the absence of Szoboszlai's attacking threat.

Arsenal in pole to sign Rice partner who’s "one of the best in the world"

Just like that, Arsenal's mini-crisis is over. The Gunners had been pulled from pillar to post over the first two weeks of the new year but it's amazing what some Dubai sun can do for you, isn't it?

Mikel Arteta's men had scored just one goal in their last three outings and tasted defeat in all of them before taking on a dwindling Crystal Palace team.

Do Arsenal still need a striker in the market? Arguably so, but a 5-0 drubbing over Roy Hodgson's men has settled the anxiety around the Emirates Stadium, pumping fresh belief back into their title challenge.

It was just what the doctor ordered, now it's time to attack the window in earnest.

Arsenal's current transfer plans

The fact of the matter is that Arsenal will struggle to sign players this month. There's been little movement on that front during the opening weeks of the window and money is tight, largely due to financial fair play restrictions.

Their foremost target, allegedly anyway, is Ivan Toney who returned to action with a goal against Nottingham Forest on Saturday after sitting out the entirety of the campaign to date having been banned for betting offences.

However, the latest on him is that Brentford reportedly won't accept anything less than their £80m valuation being met. As a result, any forthcoming move will have to wait until the summer.

Movement could be made on a midfielder, although it will depend on the price. Financially challenged Everton have seen £60m Belgium talent Amadou Onana targeted by Arsenal but again that is a difficult price to pay without sales this month. It perhaps explains slightly cheaper links to Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi.

According to reports in Spain, via Football 365, Arsenal have now leapt into pole position to sign the Spanish midfielder with it being stated that he has 'picked' the Gunners as his next club after rejecting interest from Barcelona.

Martin Zubimendi.

Valued at £51m courtesy of a release clause, yet again that move may have to wait until the summer. Still, he'd be worth waiting for. Just imagine the link-up with a certain Declan Rice.

Ray Parlour: Arsenal could find their new Ian Wright by signing £100m star

Ray Parlour has claimed that the Gunners’ leading target shares a likeness with the legendary ‘Wrighty’

ByRobbie Walls Jan 19, 2024 How Martin Zubimendi compares to Declan Rice

Rice has been nothing short of outstanding since moving to the Emirates in a mega £105m switch. Late goals against Luton Town and Manchester United have seen him go down a hero already and if such an expensive transfer could ever be seen as a bargain, the former West Ham skipper has ensured that.

However, he is lacking a partner at the moment to really elevate his game. Thomas Partey has spent the vast majority of the campaign on the treatment table, totally redundant in Arsenal's title challenge while Kai Havertz has struggled to acclimatise in that 'left 8' role that Granit Xhaka made his own last season.

It took until November for the German to finally score from open play and even if he did then bag four goals in quick succession, still doesn't look totally settled.

As a result, Zubimendi could be some much-needed added steel and glue in the middle of the park for Arsenal.

Described as one of "the best midfielders in the world" alongside Rodri by Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, the Sociedad sensation could be the man who supercharges Rice and lets him play slightly further forward.

Zubimendi is a defensive midfielder by trade and would offer some added protection. Just look at how he compares to Arsenal's record signing.

So, while Rice is evidently a bigger all-round package, what this shows is how beautifully well the two players complement each other.

Here we're talking about Zubimendi being the sitter while Rice is given the freedom to play in a more advanced role. This would suit him perfectly, being the more creative of the two. The Englishman plays more key passes, registers a higher number of shot-creating actions and is more progressive.

Declan Rice

Arsenal's midfield target, however, could reign supreme in that deeper position, making more ball recoveries and winning more aerials, while he's not a great deal far behind Rice when it comes to tackling metrics.

All season long Arteta has craved the ideal partner to supercharge Rice; this could well be the move to ensure that happens.

Beale must now unleash Sunderland’s “magic” gem alongside Hjelde

Sunderland will aim to make it back-to-back wins when Michael Beale's men face off against Middlesbrough today in the lunchtime game, an entertaining contest in prospect at the Riverside Stadium between two near neighbours.

The promotion-chasing Black Cats, who find themselves just outside of the playoff picture in the Championship after a wobbly patch of form saw them fall down the division, got their stuttering season back on track last time out with a convincing 3-1 win against Stoke City.

Although Sunderland did end up cruising to a much-needed win, the final moments were made just that little nervier when Jenson Seelt accidentally scored an own goal when Beale's men were three goals in front.

This unfortunate mishap on Seelt's end could see his starting spot sacrificed against Boro, especially with former Leeds United left-back Leo Hjelde joining the Sunderland ranks at the death on Deadline Day.

Jenson Seelt's season in numbers

Signed initially to provide centre-back cover to the likes of Daniel Ballard and Luke O'Nien, Seelt has been thrown into the deep end owing to an injury crisis at left-back recently.

3 dream wingers Sunderland could sign if they need to replace Jack Clarke

Sunderland could well be drafting up a list of potential Jack Clarke replacements in case their star-man leaves.

ByKelan Sarson Jan 22, 2024

Beale has relied upon Seelt to come in and do a job as a makeshift left-back with both Niall Huggins and Dennis Cirkin long-term absentees in the Black Cats treatment room, a less-than-ideal situation.

The 20-year-old Dutchman has performed admirably there, but his blunder against Stoke could well signal the end of his extended spell in the first-team fold as an unconventional full-back.

Losing possession a grand total of 19 times in the win on top of scoring an own goal, it makes logical sense for Beale to gift Hjelde his debut in a Sunderland strip ahead of Seelt today.

Hjelde was never banging down the door at Elland Road for more first-team minutes, hence Leeds not really putting up a fight to keep their young Norwegian defender, but the 20-year-old did shine prior to moving to Elland Road.

leo-hjelde-leeds-united-championship

Following a loan spell at Ross County – amid his stint at Celtic – the promising defender was even tipped to be the "next Van Dijk" by manager John Hughes, with the hope being that Beale can nurture such a talent over the coming months at the Stadium of Light.

The former Rangers boss will also pray that reintroducing Patrick Roberts to the first team today works wonders, the 26-year-old coming in to add an experienced head to a youthful Black Cats team as the push for promotion goes on.

Patrick Roberts' season in numbers

Roberts hasn't set the world alight when selected this season to date however, meaning this could be a controversial call for Beale to make.

The 26-year-old winger only has one assist to show for his efforts when fit from 23 appearances, with his ineffectiveness in the side only further magnified by Jack Clarke's continued heroics down the left-hand side of the pitch.

Yet, the flashes of brilliance Roberts has shown previously in his Sunderland career mean he's still a worthwhile option to start against Boro today.

Roberts excelled last campaign in the Championship, notching up five goals and seven assists as a crucial figure in the Black Cats side who made it into the playoffs.

Described as being "magic" by former Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray at the peak of his powers that same campaign, Beale will pray that Roberts can come good again with just one standout display then re-energising the wing wizard and boosting his confidence in the process.

Sunderland winger Patrick Roberts.

Starting Roberts would see the Black Cats have to majorly rejig for the trip to the Riverside – with Abdoullah Ba arguably undroppable after starring against Stoke – but it could well be a reshuffle that works if the £12.5k-per-week winger is able to show Sunderland what they've been missing on the way to another win after battling back from injury.

Future after Inzamam's stint? 'I don't care,' says Imam-ul-Haq

It’s a big point of interest in cricketing circles in Pakistan – Inzamam-ul-Haq’s tenure as chief selector is over following Pakistan’s 2019 World Cup campaign. The PCB is currently reviewing the national team’s performance since 2016, and there is uncertainty over whether Inzamam will get an extension. What, then, does Imam-ul-Haq’s future look like? “I don’t care about the pros and cons of my relationship with him [Inzamam, his uncle],” the youngster said in a press interaction in Lahore on Tuesday.Imam, 23, made his international debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi in October 2017, and has played all his cricket for Pakistan with Inzamam as the selection boss. He had a decent but unspectacular World Cup, scoring 305 runs in eight innings at an average of 38.12 and a strike rate of 76.25, hitting one century and one half-century. But his overall ODI average is an excellent 54.58 and he has formed a formidable opening partnership with Fakhar Zaman over the past couple of years. His presence in the Pakistan team has been a subject of debate all along, though, but Imam isn’t too fussed about the criticism.”This is something that you people, the media, speak about,” Imam, addressing the media alongside Babar Azam at Gaddafi Stadium, said when asked the nepotism question – not for the first time. “Our public is innocent and they believe whatever they are told. I believe in Allah. I am playing because he has destined it to be so.”But such talk has taught me a lot and made me strong mentally. It does hurt, but I try to take it positively. It is true that even if I perform in ten matches but fail in two, I am criticised. But I try not to be bothered and try to win my fans over with my performances. Neither you nor I can say what my future is. It is only Allah who knows. My responsibility is to perform and the rest is on up to the PCB.”Imam has the runs, especially in the 50-over game, but has often been too slow in gathering his runs; his strike rate is among the poorest among those with at least 1000 runs since the 2015 World Cup.”I do feel that I can improve my career strike rate from where it is today,” he said. “But, we have to realise my role in the team. I open with Fakhar, who is an aggressive batsman. He is given the role to play aggressive cricket while I have to anchor the innings. Babar and I have the same roles. Sometimes the opposition bowls well and you have give them the respect because of which things don’t go to plan for us. But whenever either of us has batted deep, we have touched 300-310.”I am still in the process of learning and you continue to learn in international cricket with every new challenge. I still feel I am very young. I am very confident in my abilities and blessed to have team-mates who keep backing me. A player cannot be satisfied with his performances and I want to set the bar high for myself and continue to grow. Once I start to feel satisfied, I will stop learning.”At the World Cup, only Babar [474 runs] scored more than Imam for Pakistan, but Imam’s numbers got a boost because of his run-a-ball hundred in the final league game against Bangladesh, earning him a mention on the Lord’s Honours Board too. He had scored 44 and 53 against England and Australia respectively, but wasn’t able to carry on.Asked if more runs from him might have helped take Pakistan to the semi-final, he said, “I also feel the same way. I would have been very happy personally had I performed in the main matches, which would have benefitted the team. I was trying to score big and follow up on my performances from the series against England [234 runs from four innings, at a strike rate of almost 90]. But sometimes things don’t turn out as planned. Perhaps we could have qualified had I started to perform earlier.”We will learn from our experience. It was a good campaign as we won five out of nine and couldn’t qualify because of our net run-rate. We are also disappointed for that, as are our fans.”

Diomande ditched in predicted Rangers lineup vs Ross County

Glasgow Rangers are set to turn their attention back to Scottish Premiership action on Wednesday night as they prepare to host Ross County at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have won their last six matches in all competitions and are on the hunt for a seventh in succession as they face off against the Staggies on home soil.

Philippe Clement's team are three points off Celtic at the top of the table, with a game in hand, and a victory by three goals or more on Wednesday would see them leapfrog their rivals.

The Glasgow giants head into this match off the back of a 2-0 win over Ayr in the SFA Cup, to secure a place in the quarter-finals of the competition, and could make some changes to the starting XI from that match.

Here is FFC's predicted Rangers line-up to take on Ross County at Ibrox on Wednesday night, with four changes to the team that won in the cup…

1 Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

In goal, former England international Jack Butland, who was signed on a free transfer from Premier League side Crystal Palace last summer, should keep his place.

The impressive 30-year-old shot-stopper has kept 15 clean sheets in 24 Premiership appearances for the club this season and will be hoping for number 16 against Ross County.

2 James Tavernier

Of course, the Rangers captain should start once again at right-back. He has racked up ten goals and five assists in 24 appearances as an ever-present in the Scottish top-flight so far this season.

3 Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

At the heart of the defence, Connor Goldson should start at centre-back as the English titan has been in dominant form in the league so far this season.

As you can see in the table above, the former Brighton & Hove Albion enforcer has dominated opposition attackers on the floor and in the air.

4 John Souttar

Rangers centre-back John Souttar.

John Souttar has been a solid operator when called upon by the Gers this season and could continue alongside Goldson to complete the centre-back pairing.

He has won 73% of his overall duels in the Premiership across 16 appearances, which shows that players find it difficult to get the better of him in physical contests.

Souttar and Goldson could be hard for Ross County's attackers to beat in the air and on the deck, and that could make them a solid partnership at the back.

5 Borna Barisic

Borna Barisic

The scorer of the opening goal against Ayr – Borna Barisic – could keep his place in the team ahead of Turkey international Ridvan Yilmaz at left-back.

He has provided three assists in 11 Premiership starts so far this season and may be hoping to add more goal contributions before the end of the season by bombing forward, as he did to great effect at the weekend.

6 John Lundstram

Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

Returning to the team at the base of Clement's midfield, John Lundstrum could anchor the team ahead of Scotland international Ryan Jack.

The former Sheffield United ace, who was once described as the "cornerstone" of the team by Maurice Ross, is a reliable presence in the middle of the park, having completed 88% of his attempted passes this season.

7 Tom Lawrence

Glasgow Rangers forward Tom Lawrence.

Tom Lawrence was rested against Ayr and should now be brought back into the starting XI after an impressive display in the Premiership last time out.

The former Derby County star started in the middle of the park alongside Lundstram against Aberdeen and registered a Sofascore rating of 7.6, as his terrific effort from distance resulted in Todd Cantwell's winning goal.

He has created four 'big chances' and provided two assists in 11 league appearances for the Light Blues, but is still searching for his first goal.

8 Todd Cantwell

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.

Another player who should be brought back into the starting XI is former Norwich City midfielder Cantwell, who made a big impact off the bench at the weekend.

He came on for Mohammed Diomande in the number ten position and created the second goal of the game – for Fabio Silva – with a fantastic run and deflected cross that fell kindly for the striker.

Diomande, who is still settling into life in Glasgow after his move in the last transfer window, could be ditched from the XI to bring Cantwell, who has scored three goals in his last four Premiership matches, back in.

The 25-year-old magician should line up ahead of Lawrence and Lundstram and look to provide a threat in the final third with his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals.

9 Ross McCausland

Rangers forward Ross McCausland.

On the right side of the attack, academy graduate Ross McCausland should return to the starting XI ahead of Scott Wright as the fourth and final change.

The former Aberdeen winger started against Ayr and failed to register a goal or an assist from the right flank. This means that he has only produced two goals and zero assists in 20 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues so far this season.

Meanwhile, McCausland has registered three assists in his last five appearances for Rangers in all competitions, and started on the right in the last league match against the Dons.

The Northern Irish youngster provides direct play and creativity, as shown by his recent form, and that is why Clement should unleash him ahead of the lacklustre Wright.

10 Fabio Silva

Fabio Silva

The centre-forward position should go to Fabio Silva after the Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee got himself on the scoresheet once again against Ayr.

He has scored in each of his last two starts for Rangers – against Livingston and Ayr – and should be provided with an opportunity to continue that streak against Ross County.

Returned to Italy in 2023 after Leeds loanTalk of Bianconeri freezing him outBattled back to star for club & countryWHAT HAPPENED?

The 25-year-old has enjoyed what could be considered the best season of his career, with an impressive contribution made to the collective cause in Turin. His 2023-24 campaign could, however, have played out very differently – with there reports when returning from a loan spell at Leeds that suggested he would be frozen out at Juve as they looked to force him into a permanent transfer elsewhere.

McKennine knuckled down, rather than pushing for the exits, and earned plenty of favour with Massimiliano Allegri. He also won over a fan base that had started to write him off, with 38 appearances taken in across all competitions – with his versatility and work rate being put to good use.

WHAT MCKENNIE SAID

McKennie has now told of rebuilding his reputation in Italy: “I think it was one of those, even coming back, it was difficult. I’m sure you’ve heard, I’ve had all the problems that I had with Juventus when I first came back, and yeah, it was one of those things where it wasn’t the first time in my career — it was the first time in my pro career, but not the first time in my career in general — where I’ve been doubted and been kind of pushed on the way out of things. And that’s whenever I became me and reverted back to the things that I know best, which is believing in myself, cutting out all the noise, putting my head down, going to work, and doing 100 percent in everything that I do. I think honestly, if I didn’t do that, then where I’m at right now, it’d be a little bit different.”

There is now talk of McKennie returning to English football, where he previously suffered relegation out of the Premier League at Leeds. He has only 12 months left to run on his current contract and, with no extension in place, has been mooted as a possible makeweight in Juve’s bid to prise Douglas Luiz away from Aston Villa.
