Beating Arsenal is 'in Harry Kane's DNA'! Bayern Munich star explains why he'll 'always have point' to prove against Gunners ahead of huge Champions League quarter-final second leg

Harry Kane says he is always motivated to score against Arsenal because he wants to prove them wrong for releasing him as a youth player.

  • Kane has great record against Arsenal
  • Was released by Gunners as a child
  • Feels he still has "point to prove"
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane was a constant thorn in Arsenal's side during his time at north London rivals Tottenham, scoring 14 goals in 19 appearances against the Gunners. He built on that record last week on his return to the English capital with his new team, Bayern Munich, when he scored in the 2-2 draw in their Champions League quarter-final tie.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There are only two teams – Everton and Leicester – that Kane has managed to score more goals against and he admits that being released by Arsenal as a nine-year-old is a key factor behind his hunger for goals whenever he comes up against them.

  • WHAT KANE SAID

Kane told : "We played them at least twice a year for the last 10 years [with Tottenham] and it was always a big occasion, big moment. Maybe it was in the back of my mind, being released from a young age, and there is always a point to prove.

"I am the type of player who, throughout my career, has had points to prove along the way. I don’t think that ever leaves you. It will always be in my DNA, until I retire. There will always be a reason to prove someone wrong or to prove myself I can do something.

"I don’t think specifically back to that and think ‘I was released when I was nine years old, I really have to make a difference tomorrow.’ Now I am at Bayern Munich it is about being a top team in the Champions League. Of course I have history with them [Arsenal], but all I can do is try to help Bayern Munich."

    WHAT NEXT FOR KANE?

The 30-year-old will hope to add even more goals to his record against his old rivals when Bayern host Mikel Arteta's team in the second leg of their European tie this week. The two teams play the return fixture in Munich on Wednesday.

'Stokes the difference in last two Tests' – Hathurusingha

Sri Lanka coach terms series ‘closely fought’ despite whitewash; rues lack of hundreds from his batsmen

Andrew Fidel Fernando in Colombo26-Nov-2018Ben Stokes turned matches, and Sri Lanka’s batting lacks maturity, but even with all that, and despite the 3-0 result, there wasn’t much separating the teams. These are Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusingha’s views after Sri Lanka were whitewashed at home by England. While in the first Test in Galle, Sri Lanka were blown away by 211 runs, the hosts had their moments in Pallekele and at the SSC. They lost the second Test by 57; the third by 42.”I thought it was a very closely fought series especially the last two games,” Hathurusingha said. “The difference between the two teams was very little. I thought England handled tough situations well. Ben Stokes was the difference in the last two games, I thought. “Other than the first Test, I thought we fought hard in the second and third games. A few issues we have to sort out, no doubt. While batting, we took some wrong options and that is the reason why we lost. Had certain things gone our way, the result could have been different.”Stokes hit 187 runs at an average of 31.16 in the series, but it was his contributions in the field and with the ball that Hathurusingha made particular mention of. At Pallekele, he effected a crucial direct-hit run out of Dimuth Karunaratne – Sri Lanka’s best batsman of the series – to cut short what had been a promising second-wicket stand in the first innings. Then at the SSC, he delivered a furious 10-over spell of hostile bowling either side of tea on the second day, as Sri Lanka lost nine wickets for 67 runs, in what turned out to be the definitive passage of play.”When things were going our way, Stokes was brilliant with the ball and on the field,” Hathurusingha said. “He took the game away from us in both games. When we were 173 for one in the first innings here, again England took the initiative away from us.”In what was otherwise a dispiriting series, perhaps the only bright spark for Sri Lanka and Hathurusingha was the spin attack, which had to contend with the departure of Rangana Herath following the first Test. England never made 350, though they probably would have at Galle, where they declared on 322 for 6 in the second innings.Herath’s like-for-like replacement Malinda Pushpakumara took nine wickets in the series, but it was the younger spinners who made the more impactful contributions. In Pallekele, offspinner Akila Dananjaya, who is presently awaiting the results of his biomechanics test after being called for throwing, took 6 for 115 in the second innings. At the SSC, left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan claimed 5 for 95 in the first innings. Those efforts were not enough to cover for batting failures, however. Four Sri Lanka batsmen made it into the eighties in the series, but no further. England, meanwhile, had four centurions in Ben Foakes, Keaton Jennings, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow.”I thought in these last two games, given our inexperienced attack due to the absence of Rangana we competed well,” Hathurusingha said. “The big difference is four hundred they scored and no hundreds from us. The toss has got lot to do as well when you are playing on these types of wickets. Of course we should have used the DRS better on hindsight. But all in all, England played better.”

Man Utd player ratings vs Coventry City: Andre Onana saves Erik ten Hag's job – for now! Shootout heroics ensure Red Devils avoid epic humiliation and earn FA Cup final spot after roller-coaster semi-final

The goalkeeper spared United's blushes after they threw away a three-goal advantage against Mark Robins' fearless side

Manchester United went to heaven, then hell and then back again, but when they were able to finally breathe the biggest sigh of relief after seeing off the bravest Coventry City side on penalties, the overall feeling was of disbelief. How could it have come to this? How could Erik ten Hag's side have been coasting at 3-0 up on 70 minutes, only to then draw 3-3 and be forced into extra-time, when they were left begging for penalties?

United had looked so comfortable, taking the lead when Scott McTominay tapped in from close-range to complete a flowing team move, and then doubling it with Harry Maguire's header from a corner right on half-time.

Bruno Fernandes looked to have rubber-stamped United's place in the final shortly after the break, and many fans would have been forgiven for planning how to get back to Wembley for the final. The players seemed to ease off, though, and Ellis Simms pulled one back for Coventry in the 71st minute.

It should have been a mere consolation goal, but it gave Mark Robins' side belief, and soon they had a second goal from Callum O'Hare's hit-and-hope effort which bounced in off Aaron Wan-Bissaka's back. Still, a third goal seemed highly unlikely until Wan-Bissaka gave away a penalty in the 94th minute which was dispatched by Haji Wright, completing a barely-believable comeback.

United looked a spent force in extra-time, save for a Bruno Fernandes strike which came off the bar. Simms came even closer to scoring for Coventry, and then Victor Torp thought he'd won it for the Championship side after the 120th minute, but VAR spared United's blushes.

The shootout got off to a nightmare start when Casemiro's bungled Panenka was saved, but Andre Onana did his part, saving from Callum O'Hare before psyching out Ben Sheaf, who ballooned over the bar and allowed Rasmus Hojlund to send United into the final against Manchester City. But after this horror-show against a far, far weaker team wearing sky blue, will any United fans be looking forward to it?

GOAL rates United's players from Wembley Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Andre Onana (6/10):

Had very little to worry about until Simms' goal, when he was beaten at his near post and could have got down quicker. Wound the Coventry fans up by taking his time at goal-kicks, eventually getting booked for it, and again in the shootout. Made a fine save from O'Hare and did his best Emiliano Martinez impression to put Sheaf off.

    Diogo Dalot (8/10):

Exceptional in every facet of the game. Made two key defensive actions before setting up McTominay.

    Casemiro (5/10):

A makeshift centre-back due to United's injury crisis and it suited him for most of the game until Coventry were galvanised and he gave the ball straight back to them after conceding the second. Made a big block in extra-time but also looked vulnerable. His penalty was dire.

    Harry Maguire (5/10):

Began well and scored a trademark thumping header but looked nervous and uncomfortable when Coventry came back.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (3/10):

United's weak link. Rarely looked comfortable and turned his back on O'Hare's shot then gave away the penalty.

    Midfield

    Kobbie Mainoo (7/10):

His composed passing helped United get off to the ideal start and control most of the game. Taken off just after Coventry pulled one back and United badly missed his presence from then on.

    Scott McTominay (5/10):

Got the ball rolling but then his deficiencies as a holding midfielder were laid bare when Mainoo went off.

    Bruno Fernandes (6/10):

Had a strange game, setting up Maguire's goal and scoring himself, but when United needed to just see the game out, he couldn't get them over the line. Almost scored in extra-time.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Marcus Rashford (5/10):

Had some bright moments but no cutting edge and still incapable of doing any back-tracking or defending. Limped off right before extra-time.

    Rasmus Hojlund (4/10):

Poor. Had just one shot, which was blocked. Not been the same since getting injured in February, but at least he scored his penalty.

    Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):

Played his part in the opening goal but was otherwise sloppy, ballooning over the bar and having an air shot. The first player to be taken off.

    Subs & Manager

    Antony (4/10):

When he came on the score was 3-0. Enough said.

    Christian Eriksen (5/10):

Underlined why he has featured so little recently.

    Amad Diallo (4/10):

Should have played Fernandes in when it was two-v-two, instead holding on to the ball needlessly. Skied a decent opening.

    Omari Forson (5/10):

Came on in the 103rd minute and almost scored, denied by Collins at full stretch.

    Erik ten Hag (4/10):

It's difficult to imagine how he could have survived had United not won the shootout. Even though they did, it's still difficult to see him making it through the summer. His changes allowed Coventry back into the game and made no sense.

Man Utd could replace Marcus Rashford with "unstoppable" £98m star

Manchester United went into this season surrounded by optimism for the first time in a few years; after all, they finished third last season, won the League Cup and recruited well over the summer, bringing in the likes of Andre Onana and Mason Mount.

However, to say things have gone downhill since then would be quite an understatement.

The club currently find themselves on the precipice of an early exit from the Champions League, thanks to some genuinely woeful performances from Onana, and seventh in the Premier League – as close to 15th place as first.

Andre Onana drew attention away from how poor 6/10 Man Utd man was v Gala

This 6/10 man let Manchester United down alongside Andre Onana in the side’s 3-3 draw with Galatasaray.

ByAdam Scully Nov 30, 2023

There are, of course, numerous reasons for the club's recent implosion, from the clown show that was the potential sale of the club to injuries and even reported fallings out between certain players and Erik ten Hag.

That said, the main group of first-team players just haven't been playing to the required level, and while you could take your pick as to who has been most disappointing so far this season, Marcus Rashford no doubt features highly in most people's lists.

Marcus Rashford

The England international has seemingly fallen off a cliff this year, so fans will be delighted to hear that the club have been linked to AC Milan star Rafael Leão.

Manchester transfer news – Rafael Leão

According to Italian publication Calciomercato (via TeamTalk), Manchester United are well and truly in the mix to sign Leao in 2024, but they will have to compete with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain for the winger's signature.

The former Lille star signed for the Rossoneri back in 2019 for the now bargain price of around £32m, but according to the report, it would cost the Red Devils in the region of €115m (£98m) to sign the player in the new year.

This massive jump in price is both down to his incredible performances for the Italian giants and the fact that he signed a new five-year contract with the club back in May.

Rafael Leao for AC Milan

While the move would require the three-time European champions to splash the cash, it would likely be worth it to sign a player that journalist Carlo Garganese described as "like peak Thierry Henry" at one stage last season.

How Rafael Leão compares to Marcus Rashford

As we mentioned earlier, local lad Rashford has been abysmal this season by his own lofty standards. Where he was a seemingly unstoppable force of goals for most of last year – finishing up with 30 goals in all club competitions – he has looked incapable of finding the back of the net this season.

In his 18 United games this season, he has scored just two goals – one of which was a penalty – and provided three assists. In truth, the 26-year-old just hasn't been good enough.

However, his underlying numbers are not entirely dreadful and therefore, were Ten Hag to have a player like Leao at his disposal, he could give Rashford the time out of the limelight he so desperately needs.

When comparing the players' underlying numbers, the "unstoppable" Leão, as described by football writer Zach Lowy, slightly edges it and would likely have a more significant impact on United this season.

Ultimately, Leão would be a massive asset to the club were this deal to go through, and while he is undoubtedly a threat to Rashford, he could also be precisely what he needs: someone else to help shoulder the burden.

The best footy scran at every Premier League stadium – ranked

A good matchday experience nowadays isn't just about the result, or the atmosphere. For many it includes the food and drink on offer at the stadium.

X account Footy Scran has skyrocketed in followers and impressions in recent years, with fans salivating at some of the dishes served around the country.

Gone are the days of making the choice between a meat pie and a tray of chips, now you'll likely have an array of options to choose from.

Football FanCast has taken a look at some of the best 'Footy Scran' served at Premier League stadiums, ranked on value for money.

It is important to note that some of the following dishes are served just outside of the ground. Every food item will be pictured below the text.

Without further ado, here are our rankings…

18 Emirates Stadium – Arsenal

Hot dog – £8

The North Londoners certainly serve a tasty-looking hotdog, although some hypercynics have critiqued the pool of cheese that dresses over much of it.

From a price point, £8 is pretty steep and you wouldn't be too hard-pressed to find a cheaper, more substantial dish elsewhere at the other Premier League grounds.

So for that reason, we've ranked it bottom.

Fish & chips with mushy peas – £11

Fish and chips are of course a British delicacy and who doesn't love a side of mushy peas? Whilst there are no complaints from a presentation standpoint, the £11 it'll set you back is pretty costly.

The Seagulls, quite controversially, don't sell chips inside the stadium so you'll have to locate the van situated just outside the Amex.

So rather than a half-time meal, fans will have to leave themselves time to queue at the food truck pre-match, which cynics will probably knock.

Anyhow, it looks well worth the wait…

Buffalo chicken & chips – £11

Whilst £11 is costly, in fairness to the Villa Park chefs, they've been generous with the portion sizes and it looks absolutely delicious.

Buffalo sauce has become a hugely popular condiment in this country of late, particularly with fried chicken, so the West Midlanders appear as though they're on to a winner, here.

Interestingly, Footy Scran ran a poll under their initial tweet, which gave their followers the option of; scran, no scran or scran but too expensive.

60.7% voted scran, 6% voted no scran and 33.4% voted scran but too expensive, which aligns with our thinking too. It's hard to rank the dish any higher due to the price.

15 Old Trafford – Manchester United

Hot dog – £6

Firstly, looking at the picture below, you're probably wondering why on earth there is an Xbox code on the side of the bun, well us too.

They're reportedly Xbox game passes, so if you are a gamer and enjoy a hot dog, perhaps you should get yourself down to Old Trafford.

Nevertheless, it's actually a pretty tasty-looking hotdog and at £6, it's a decent enough price, particularly with the bizarre but useful promo code.

14 City Ground – Nottingham Forest

Pizza dog – £7

Bare with us on this one, a pizza dog? Apparently, the City Ground serve a hotdog on a pizza…

Whilst we can't verify how it tastes, it looks palatable, but admittedly it won't be for everyone. Clearly, it's meant to be a bit of a unique quirk that entices people and for £7, you could do worse.

Footy Scran put up a poll beneath the tweet which saw 78.9% vote scran and 21.1% no scran, so it's obviously inviting for most people.

13 London Stadium – West Ham United

Pie & mash with liquor & chilli vinegar – £9

It won't be to everyone's liking, as the poll evinces, but the dish is a Cockney classic and it originates from the Docks of London.

For £9 you're getting a pretty substantial portion of mash there and a nice hearty pie, so we think the Hammers are offering decent value with this one, certainly for a football ground.

The food at stadiums will always come at a premium, so we've tried to bear that in mind with our rankings.

12 Bramall Lane – Sheffield United

Filled vegan beef & onion pie – £5

Well, Sheffield United's filled vegan beef and onion pie will definitely be controversial among meat lovers but don't knock it until you've tried it.

One X user confirmed that it's actually very tasty, so if that is the case, then you're probably getting decent value for £5, even if it is on the pricier side.

£6.60 it'll set you back for a pie and a cup of tea at Bramall Lane… could be worse.

11 Selhurst Park – Crystal Palace

Chicken burger – £6

Tell you what, Crystal Palace serve a gorgeous-looking chicken burger, that looks marvellous. If it tastes half as good as it looks, then £6 is super value.

It isn't actually served inside Selhurst Park, however, but rather at the fan zone which houses a capacity of 500 people, offering a range of different food and drink stalls.

There's also a big screen for match-goers' entertainment, so it sounds like a great spot to hang out.

Hats off to the Eagles.

10 Molineux Stadium – Wolves

Double bacon cheeseburger & chips – £10

You'll have to fork out a tenner, but it looks worth it.

Footy Scran posted a picture of Molineux's double bacon cheeseburger and chips that went viral, leaving many X users salivating.

The chips, in particular, received high praise, with one person commenting: "I’d pay £10 just for those chips. Unreal."

It is pretty costly but you'll be hard-pressed to find a better-looking bit of scran around the Premier League.

9 Stamford Bridge – Chelsea

Chicken strips & waffle fries with chilli mayo – £9.95

Just under a tenner for Chelsea's delicious-looking chicken strips and waffle fries with chilli mayo.

Again, it is rather pricey but it looks flavoursome, so we reckon you're getting decent value for money, particularly in the affluent area of West London.

82.6% voted for scran on the post's poll, which is why we've ranked it just ahead of Wolves' cheeseburger, which had a few harsh critics taking aim at the mayonnaise.

Aston Villa injuries: Emery’s “unstoppable” talisman a doubt vs Bournemouth

Aston Villa have been dealt a blow after learning that one of their top stars is an injury doubt for Sunday afternoon's game vs Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Aston Villa injury news

The Midlands outfit currently have Tyrone Mings, Emiliano Buendia and Bertrand Traore out on the sidelines with their own respective problems as it stands, but they aren’t the only ones who will be absent for today's encounter.

Boubacar Kamara is suspended for this one after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season so he won’t be available for selection for the fixture at the Vitality Stadium, and due to fitness, there’s half a possibility that Unai Emery will be without another of his first-team squad members.

During Thursday’s Europa League 2-1 victory over Legia Warsaw, Ollie Watkins was missing from the team sheet after feeling some pain in training, so it definitely makes sense that the striker wasn’t risked in case his problem was to get worse.

However, England’s international has been the club’s overall best-performing player so far this campaign with a match rating of 7.32 (WhoScored – Aston Villa statistics), meaning that the boss will be hoping to have his talisman back at his disposal as soon as possible.

Watkins now a doubt vs Bournemouth

Speaking during his pre-match press conference on Friday, Emery confirmed that Watkins is an injury doubt for today's game vs Bournemouth and will be assessed.

As quoted by Aston Villa's official website, he said: “He’s going to be a doubt for Sunday. We are adding other players, like Jhon Duran, Zaniolo and Jacob Ramsey, who is getting more minutes.

"He’s not completely unavailable for Sunday. We are going to wait for tomorrow and see if we can take a risk with him or not. We will see how he feels about facing the demands in 90 minutes we are going to face on Sunday.”

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Emery will miss "unstoppable" Watkins

In the Premier League this season, Watkins has posted 14 contributions, seven goals and the same number of assists, in 13 appearances (Transfermarkt – Watkins statistics), so should he be ruled out of the game today, it would be a huge blow for Aston Villa who know the positive impact that he is capable of making.

The Torquay-born talent has recorded 39 shots so far over the course of the campaign which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Aston Villa statistics), showing how much more prolific he can be in the final third compared to his peers.

With his versatility to also operate in six different positions over the pitch, including everywhere across the frontline and two roles in the midfield, Watkins is an “unstoppable” centre-forward, according to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher, so the sooner that he is able to stage his comeback on the grass, the better for Emery.

Spurs can oust Dier by signing 6 ft 4 titan with "world-class" potential

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou issued much change in the summer, having recognised the glaring need for refurbishment when arriving from Celtic.

Having slumped to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last term, Spurs were indeed in desperate need of change and the Australian manager brought newfound positivity and an arresting style of play.

But having soared into first place after ten matches, Tottenham have now fallen to three straight defeats after that detrimental evening against Chelsea, and moves must be made in January to ensure that the first-team is strong enough to achieve the lofty ambitions.

Tottenham transfer news – Morato

According to Record – via Sport Witness – Tottenham are interested in exciting Benfica defender Morato, though it's stressed that the Portuguese giants are not interested in engaging in discussions this winter.

The 22-year-old is left-footed and as such would be the perfect stand-in for influential summer signing Micky van de Ven, who signed from Wolfsburg for £43m and had been immense before injury against the Blues has ruled him out until after the new year.

The report states that Morato had attracted Premier League attention in the summer, with Benfica rejecting €30m (£26m) offers from Fulham and Nottingham Forest.

Morato's style of play

Morato, while not quite putting it all together yet, has been described as 'technically superior' to Van de Ven when the Daily Mail recently revealed the list of centre-back targets for Tottenham.

This season, the 6 foot 4 Brazilian has made 11 appearances across all competitions but has only been used from the outset on three occasions in the Portuguese top-flight, bagging an assist from left-back against Sporting Lisbon in his most recent outings.

Spurs eyeing move for "dominant" £87m talent who's like Laporte

The Lilywhites are unsurprisingly looking to strengthen their centre-back ranks in the New Year.

He has been said to have the makings of a “world-class” defender by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with his potential possibly being realised under Postecoglou's wing in north London.

That being said, he has demonstrated his credentials with a stellar showing against Inter Milan in the Champions League, taking 99 touches, completing 81% of his passes, winning 13 duels, and clinching an impressive haul of nine clearances and six tackles, as per Sofascore.

Given that Morato's modern, ball-playing roots align with Postecoglou's possession-based, swift-flowing system, he would be a massive upgrade on Eric Dier, who has been called upon amid the deluge of absences recently but is out of contract at the end of the campaign and clearly not favoured by his 58-year-old manager.

Described as a “liability” by writer Mitch Fretton for his role in Tottenham's demise last season, Dier, aged 29, ranks among the bottom 46% of defenders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the bottom 9% for progressive passes per 90 – evidencing his incongruity in the system.

While Morato does not appear quite ready for a starting berth with regularity in the Premier League, it may well be high time for him to make the move and serve as Van de Ven's understudy, acting as a foil while simultaneously spelling the end of Dier's Tottenham career.

The England international has been something of a stalwart, but his time is up and the club must move on.
