Beraldo shoved Aubameyang off fieldReferee called over to review replaySent defender off with straight redWHAT HAPPENED?

Beraldo, already on a yellow card, challenged Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the ball and sent the Marseille striker sliding off the pitch and into PSG coach Luis Enrique. The referee initially gave a free-kick without a second booking for the defender, but then reviewed the footage and came back with a straight red card.

Although the incident happened near the middle of the field, Beraldo was the last defender and Aubameyang had just knocked the ball into space before he was sent to the ground and towards the touchline. The officials deemed that Beraldo had denied a clear scoring opportunity and decided to send him off.

GettyWHAT NEXT FOR PSG?

After going down to 10 men, PSG will hope to bounce back and get the victory at the Orange Velodrome on Sunday.

The surprise academy star who could replace Richarlison at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou might need to make good use of his side's exciting youth ranks soon, with a host of injuries to key personnel threatening to disrupt the stellar start to the season.

The likes of James Maddison and Micky van de Ven are already sidelined until the new year, something that had a detrimental effect on the chances of beating Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League last weekend.

Indeed, the Old Gold prevailed having trailed for the lion's share of the match, compounding Spurs' woes after falling to a 4-1 defeat against Chelsea.

Both matches were circumstantial, having led against the Blues and unloaded heavy pressure in the opening phase, but Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie's dismissals spoiled the chances of extending their lead at the top of the table.

Postecoglou will be expected to fortify a squad that was already a little thin in comparison to juggernauts of the division such as Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, but with such a robust crop of academy talent awaiting ascension, he might be wise to balance between internal and external supplementation.

As such, it might be high time to welcome some teenagers to the first-team fold; Jamie Donley and Alfie Dorrington are among the academy players to have earned a place on the bench in recent weeks, but Postecoglou could find another prodigy in Yago Santiago bursting to be unleashed.

Yago Santiago's statistics at youth level

Aged just 16, Tottenham completed the signing of exciting Spanish talent Santiago from Celta Vigo in 2020, and he has since gone on to make 104 appearances for the development squad, posting 19 goals and 14 assists.

This season, he has really come into his own and has already scored six goals and supplied four assists in the Premier League 2, despite only playing ten matches.

For comparison, Maddison has clinched three strikes and five assists from 11 matches in the English top-flight this term. Difference circumstances; different levels – but it's certainly a testament to the level that Santiago is performing at right now, likely fighting for that elusive next step in his progress.

Spurs presenter Matt Tarr pronounced that Santiago is a prospect with a "really bright future", and given that he has undergone incremental growth over the past few years, he may well be teetering on the cusp of a burst into the senior set-up.

Not just a prolific figure, the fleet-footed ace's overall play will undoubtedly have brought his name to Postecoglou's attention, and a debut will be a matter of when, not if, should his performances remain at this level.

Yago Santiago's style of play

Principally a left winger, Santiago is confident across the frontline and will be eager to impress in any role that might be handed to him, should he earn a promotion to the first-team at some point this season.

Profiling his skill set, Spurs club insider superhotspur highlighted some of the talent's finest attributes, saying: 'Versatile and capable of starting matches in all of the forward areas of the pitch, the skilful forward has looked so composed on the ball in every game that he has played in this season. Often making things look effortless with the ball at his feet, Yago is a creative player, and he has shown already this season that he can create chances on his own, out of very little.'

While he has yet to receive a taste of senior action, the 20-year-old is now at the point where he needs to be searching for football at top level, blending into the game and testing his craft against the best around.

Hailed for his "mazy" dribbling by Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold, the dynamo certainly boasts a wealth of skills that would set him in good stead to succeed at senior level, and he may be on the brink of receiving an opportunity.

Especially considering Richarlison still fails to reach his apex on the left wing, and given that he is currently out injured, Santiago will be eager to grace the grass under Postecoglou's wing for the first time.

Richarlison's numbers at Spurs

Tottenham signed Richarlison from Premier League rivals Everton for £60m in July 2022, with the deal – while expensive – looking like good business for a reliable and menacing offensive star.

The former Toffees talisman had scored 53 goals from 152 appearances with the Merseyside outfit, but he flattered to deceive across his first campaign with Spurs and was branded "useless" by The RedMen TV's Chris Pajak.

Having scored just one Premier League goal across the 2022/23 campaign, the Brazilian has improved this season, bagging just the one goal again in the league this term but doing so from 17 fewer appearances, also providing three assists already.

At present, the 26-year-old is out injured after having surgery on his groin, and is still not expected to return to action for several weeks, which could prompt Postecoglou to look into the academy, specifically at Santiago.

Richarlison's depreciation in market value is concerning, sure, but it's not unwarranted, with his blunted attacking edge and multitude of performances as little more than a passenger exacerbating his woes in London.

That being said, he is still a quality forward and has demonstrated his capabilities in the Premier League for several years with Everton, having been lauded for his "relentless" running before by writer Joe Strange.

And given that he still ranks among the top 16% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shots taken, the top 13% for assists, the top 5% for touches in the attacking box and the top 35 for aerial wins per 90, as per FBref, he has maintained the attributes that will welcome more prolific feats.

The £90k-per-week menace will be hoping to realise his best form once returning from injury, and while Postecoglou is clearly a believer in his talent, he will not retain his starting spot in the team forever, especially with prodigies such as Santiago pushing for a breakthrough.

Whether Santiago succeeds in carrying his success on the development scene into senior football will be something that will become clearer in the future, but should he continue to catch the eye, Postecoglou might be forced to provide him with an opportunity sooner rather than later.

Harmanpreet, Rodrigues, spinners make it 4-0 for India

The India captain shared a 75-run third-wicket stand with Rodrigues to shore up the side, before Deepti, Poonam and Radha ripped through the opposition batting

India women wrapped up a dominant tour of Sri Lanka with a 51-run victory in the final T20I in Katunayake. The victory meant India won the series 4-0, with the second game in Colombo being washed out. They had also won the preceding three-match ODI series 2-1.Early on, the Sri Lanka bowlers validated their captain Chamari Atapattu’s decision to field first by dismissing both India openers, Smriti Mandhana and Mithali Raj, inside the first five overs to reduce them to 30 for 2. That left the onus on the in-form Jemimah Rodrigues, coming into the match on the back of successive half-centuries, to repair the innings, and she once again did the job, joining hands with captain Harmanpreet Kaur to put on 75 for the third wicket. However, once Sri Lanka found a way past the duo, with the wicket of Rodrigues for 46, the end was swift as India lost their last eight wickets for 51 runs. Harmanpreet was the eighth batsman dismissed, for 63 off 38 balls – an innings that contained three fours and five sixes. As was the case when Sri Lanka batted, spinners did the bulk of the damage, with the offspinning duo of Shashikala Siriwardene and Inoshi Priyadarshini snaring three wickets each.Sri Lanka lost Atapattu on the fourth ball of their chase and never quite recovered. Anushka Sanjeewani (29), Siriwardene (22) and Oshadi Ranasinghe (22) got the starts, but Sri Lanka needed them to stay on and steer the chase. The hosts also did not help themselves with three run-outs, including that of Priyadarshini, who was the last batsman dismissed as Sri Lanka crashed to 105 all out. Poonam Yadav was the most successful bowler, picking up 3 for 18 in four overs. Deepti Sharma, who opened the bowling, and Radha Yadav grabbed two wickets each from their respective three overs.

Inter Miami player ratings vs Monterrey: David Ruiz disaster dooms Lionel Messi-less Herons in leg one setback in CONCACAF Champions Cup

Inter Miami were in cruise control until two needless yellow cards reduced them to 10 men, ultimately dooming their Champions Cup hopes.

In the hours before kickoff, the rumors began on social media. Lionel Messi, who had earmarked Wednesday's clash with Monterrey as a potential return date, was out. Inter Miami's squad announcement 60 minutes before kickoff confirmed the news. Nightmare.

To be fair, the Herons nearly survived without him. In the end, though, Messi's absence was felt as the South Beach MLS club threw away the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup tie against Monterrey.

Playing at home, Inter Miami fell 2-1 with a David Ruiz dismissal leading to their undoing. Up 1-0 thanks to a Tomas Aviles goal, Ruiz's 65th-minute sending off was the turning point, the opening Monterrey needed to wake them up.

Just four minutes after being reduced to 10 men, Monterrey were level – Maxi Meza the scorer, pouncing on the ball in the box to make it 1-1.

From there, there was little doubt about how this would end. Miami had to survive the incoming tidal wave, but they couldn't quite do it. Jorge Rodriguez's 88th-minute curled finish from range earned Monterrey a win, and a significant advantage heading into the second leg.

Will Messi play in that one? We'll find out soon enough, but Wednesday was a catastrophic turn of events heading into leg two.

GOAL rates Inter Miami's players from Chase Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Drake Callender (7/10):

Not much he could have done to prevent the goals. Had a few good stops to keep Miami in it as he finished on seven saves.

    Jordi Alba (6/10):

Did a good job defensively and had his typically good performance going forward. Didn't change the game, but didn't lose it either.

    Tomas Aviles (7/10):

A much-needed goal for a defender who has had some tough moments this season. Aviles had a solid performance even outside of the finish, arguably his best of the season so far.

    Nicolas Freire (6/10):

Nearly as solid as Aviles. This team looks much better with him in the XI.

    Marcelo Weigandt (6/10):

Another good game from the new signing. You can see the vision with him as the right-back.

    Midfield

    Sergio Busquets (6/10):

Unfortunate to see the ball bounce off him leading to Meza's goal. Other than that, a typically steady performance.

    Diego Gomez (5/10):

Had plenty of energy and had a few bright moments. That said, he went 0/7 on duels and had a bad touch that helped lead to the Monterrey winner.

    David Ruiz (4/10):

Was sent off for two needless yellow cards. You simply cannot do that in a game of this caliber, and it will be a big turning point for growth in his young career.

    Attack

    Robert Taylor (N/A):

Suffered an early injury. Miami really can't afford to lose anyone else right now, so the Herons will have to hope it isn't too bad.

    Luis Suarez (6/10):

Didn't really get going. Had two shots, neither on target, and just two touches in the opposing box. Monterrey did a good job with him, despite all of his effort and energy.

    Julian Gressel (7/10):

A playmaking machine. Played another spectacular ball on Aviles' goal, adding yet another set-piece assist to his collection this season.

    Subs & Manager

    Leo Alfonso (6/10):

Put into the game in the 37th minute to replace Taylor, but taken right back out in the 67th due to Ruiz's dismissal. Unlucky for the newly-signed attacker.

    Ryan Sailor (6/10):

Thrown in to help Miami survive after Ruiz's exit. Did just that from his spot in defense.

    Tata Martino (6/10):

Can't fault him for the team going down to 10 and, by and large, they handled it well. Prior to Ruiz's exit, it felt like Miami was doing just fine even without Messi, which was a testament to their coach. Baffled as to why he didn't make more subs, though.

Chelsea tempted by move for "spectacular" star as "big-money" exit possible

Chelsea chiefs could be "very tempted" to sign a big club's "spectacular" star with his "big-money" exit possible, according to a report this week.

Chelsea transfer targets for 2024

Mauricio Pochettino's side are steadily beginning to pick up form after a torrid start to the new Premier League season, even if they did squander a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 against Arsenal last weekend. On paper, Chelsea can now boast an unbeaten run of four in all competitions – last losing to Aston Villa around a month ago. In that time, the Blues have sealed wins against Fulham, Brighton and Burnley; results which will undoubtedly please Pochettino.

However, as the January transfer window slowly approaches, it is reported that Chelsea want to sign a new striker and bolster their forward line. Summer signing Nicolas Jackson has largely struggled, forcing Pochettino to play the likes of Armando Broja instead lately. Pundit Michael Owen urged Chelsea to sign a world-class number nine all the way back in April, slamming their very poor record last term.

“The most incredible thing is that you can spend £500-something million or whatever they've spent in recent times and the most important position on the pitch they've not even touched,” Owen said.

“That they can get all these great players and spend a fortune and the one position really that you to be investing the most money in and making sure is an absolute perfect fit is a centre forward. I think they've scored 29 goals in 29 games this season. It's unbelievably poor."

According to recent reports, Chelsea transfer chiefs Todd Boehly, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley aim to fix that Pochettino's striker problem in the new year. Indeed, Brentford striker Ivan Toney, Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic have all been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge in the last few weeks alone.

However, the forward area isn't the only position which may be reinforced at Chelsea, as explained by a new report concerning Barcelona star Gavi.

Gavi transfer update

According to TEAMtalk, amid Barca's current financial woes and legalities with La Liga, they may be forced to offload more quality players and avaid sanctions next year. As a result, the Spaniard, who's played all 10 of their league matches this season, could be at the centre of a potential "big-money" exit in 2024.

This has seemingly alerted Boehly, and Chelsea could be "very tempted" to sign Gavi if Xavi's side are in fact forced to part ways. The teenage midfielder, who stands out as one of Europe's rising stars, has already been called "spectacular" by Xavi in recent years.

“What’s surprising is his age, he’s 17 and look how he competes. Today he made the difference with a goal and an assist,” said Barca's manager to the Spanish press after a 3-2 win over Elche in 2021.

“More than anything his work is spectacular. We’re happy to have him and I don’t want to compare him to anyone. There’s no ceiling for him.”

Fabrizio Romano shares what he’s heard on Arsenal moving for Sacha Boey

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Galatasaray defender Sacha Boey over the summer, and a reliable journalist has now delivered an update on the chances of him joining the club in January.

Sacha Boey profiled

Boey is naturally a right-back, who has plied his trade at RAMS Park for the past two years since joining from Rennes back in 2021, and he’s since gone on to become a regular feature of their squad, making 74 appearances to date (Transfermarkt – Boey statistics).

The Frenchman has emerged as Okan Buruk’s second best-performing defensive player so far this season (WhoScored – Galatasaray statistics), and perhaps unsurprisingly given his impressive form since the start of the new campaign, he’s been on the radar for a while at the Emirates.

Over the summer, Edu and Mikel Arteta made contact to discover what the conditions of a deal for the 23-year-old would look like, though a move failed to come to fruition before the previous transfer deadline, with the club instead signing Jurrien Timber. The Gunners, however, were last month claimed to have sent scouts to watch their target live in action as they weigh up another approach ahead of the upcoming window, but if the following update is to be believed, it’s unlikely that a switch will take place.

Fabrizio Romano shares update on Sacha Boey

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Arsenal were never in advanced negotiations for Boey, despite the player himself confirming the interest from the Premier League.

He said: “Another player linked with Arsenal is Galatasaray right-back Sacha Boey, who spoke in an interview recently about the Gunners holding talks to sign him during the summer, though he says they never made an official bid.

"Honestly, though, I’m told Arsenal were never in concrete talks for any fullback as they signed Jurrien Timber as their priority target to cover different positions. So with Boey it was nothing concrete, nothing advanced. Many clubs are following Boey for the future but it’s not something that we can describe as a deal or negotiation yet.”

Galatasaray defender Sacha Boey.

Arsenal could land bargain in Sacha Boey

In the Super Lig, Boey only currently pockets £9k-per-week (Galatasaray salaries), so he would be a more than affordable option for Edu as that would make him the lowest-earner on his books (Arsenal salaries), therefore making this a no-brainer of a deal to revisit in the near future.

The Montreuil native is currently averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and 1.6 aerial wins per league game (WhoScored – Boey statistics), highlighting the rock he can be in the backline both on and off the ground, but he’s also capable of getting involved at the opposite end of the pitch.

Aerial duels

Crossing

Dribbling

Concentration

Tackling (Data via WhoScored)

Boey has racked up 13 contributions (seven assists and six goals) in 142 outings since the start of his career which shows that he loves to burst down the flank, take on his marker and create chances for himself and his fellow teammates, so chiefs really should reconsider their decision to not pursue a deal for their target.

Malcolm Speed wants Mark Taylor to replace David Peever as CA chairman

The former CA chairman has called for ‘dyed-in-the-wool cricket people’ to ‘stand up and take back their sport’

Daniel Brettig30-Oct-2018Malcolm Speed, James Sutherland’s predecessor as chief executive of Cricket Australia, has called for the resignation of the chairman David Peever and his replacement by the former captain Mark Taylor as a signal for “dyed-in-the-wool cricket people” to take back control of the game from an increasingly corporatised Board of the governing body.Still directly involved in sports administration as the executive director of the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, Speed decried Peever’s handling of the release of cultural reviews into CA in the wake of the Newlands ball-tampering scandal, particularly his interview with Leigh Sales on the , in which he described the scandal as a “hiccup” for cricket.Speed also indicated that a host of eminent leaders with a background in cricket would be open to joining the CA Board were it to be chaired by Taylor, who has served as a director across two separate stints since 2004 but has never assumed the role of leading it. “I have been friends with the recent chairmen of Australian cricket. David is the first to have come out of the corporate world rather than out of the cricket world and I think in this crisis that’s what’s shown here,” Speed, also a former CEO of the ICC, told radio.”One thing that did strike me last night, I watched the , at the end of the interview when he was talking about something that I would regard as orchestrated cheating – the captain, the vice-captain, the youngest player sit down and decide that they will go out onto the ground with sandpaper, will tamper with the ball, which is against the laws of the game, so they decide to go out and cheat – David Peever described this as a hiccup.”Now, it’s not a hiccup, it’s much more than that, and my response to that was when I saw that interview and I saw that comment, I thought Australian cricket can do better in choosing its chairman and the game deserves better governance, the game deserves better leadership.”Taylor, who backed Peever’s re-election as chairman of CA for a further three years at the CA AGM last week, was present in Melbourne on Monday for the release of CA’s cultural reviews, conducted by Dr Simon Longstaff of the Ethics Centre and the former Test opening batsman Rick McCosker. Speed said that the increasingly corporatised direction of CA, as outlined by Longstaff’s report, had created a gulf in terms of genuine knowledge of the game and how it should be run at the Board level.”I’d like to see Mark Taylor stand up as chairman of Cricket Australia,” Speed said. “He’s on the board, he’s been there for quite a long time and there is a bit of an outcry that the whole of the board must go, I don’t agree with that, there are some very good people on that board who work hard, who have good judgment. I’d like to see Mark Taylor come forward as the next chairman.”Mark is an outstanding man, who’s lived and breathed Australian cricket, who’s been on the Board for some time. I say I’ve run my race, like a lot of other people who’ve been involved in cricket, yes we’d love to be involved again if Mark were to be chairman and he rang me and said ‘I want you to be on the Board’ I would be there in a flash, as would lots of other people who’ve contributed to Australian cricket.”There is a strong corporatisation of the board, that was a result of a serious governance review seven or eight years ago. It’s good to see some diversity on the board – some women on the board, some people who aren’t from the cricket family so to speak – but I think that’s missing at the moment, that the dyed-in-the-wool cricket people need to stand up and take back their sport.”Key points from the culture review•ESPNIn making observations of the review, Speed said he was surprised to hear recommendations that captaincy candidates required lessons in moral courage, and that the selectors should include questions of character in their assessments of the players they choose. Speed described these conclusions as “naive”.”A couple of things struck me as quite strange. Firstly, that the candidates for captaincy should have extra lessons in moral courage,” Speed said. “Now, if I had said to the captains I dealt with, people like Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting and before them Allan Border, that they needed lessons in moral courage, that would’ve been a very short conversation, I can tell you that … they were never short of moral courage.”The other thing that struck me is the direction that the selectors are now to take into account character when they’re picking the Australian cricket team as well as ability. That’s happened from the start of Australian cricket. It’s a major feature of what the selectors do so there are parts of the report that I think are naive.”Among the areas for question about the review was the low level of return by current players to Longstaff’s requests for survey responses or interviews – revealed to be around 30% of those asked. Alistair Nicholson, the Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive, indicated that most players felt more comfortable contributing to the ACA’s own submission, noting that the review itself cited CA’s inability to handle negative feedback.”Players contributed a lot to what our submission to the review was, whether it was through a survey or interviews. They gave us a lot of feedback around that, so it’s important to note that came through in the overall Longstaff report,” Nicholson said. “The other thing is there’s indications in there around how negative feedback is not well taken [by CA] and in some cases players decided they didn’t want to do it and referred through us, and we compiled an appropriate submission.”At the same time, the ACA’s president Greg Dyer indicated that relationships between the leaders of the two organisation had improved since last year’s fractious pay dispute, even though he stated bluntly that much of the players’ association’s criticisms of CA over recent years had been fully backed up by the findings of Longstaff and McCosker.”Cordial, friendly, there’s a thawing which has commenced is how I’d describe it,” Dyer said of the relationship. “There are fruitful discussions underway, which obviously are confidential in nature, but there is a thawing, a definite willingness on both sides to improve that at the personal level, but we need to make sure the organisation beyond David Peever and Greg Dyer, beyond Alistair Nicholson and Kevin Roberts, we need to make sure that organisational relationship is founded on very strong foundations.”Nobody within the ACA, nobody within our membership has been surprised by any of the findings of the Dr Longstaff review. This report details a corporate culture which is as bad as I’ve seen in my 30 years in the commercial world.”
