Lizelle Lee's commanding century powers Surrey to KSL title

The South African crunched a 55-ball hundred which overwhelmed the Loughborough Lightning attack

‘The team pulled together and I’m so proud’ – Lee

ScorecardA magnificent 55-ball century from Lizelle Lee took Surrey Stars to their maiden Kia Super League title, her side racking up 183 or 6 – their highest KSL total – before bowling Loughborough Lightning out for 117.Fellow South Africans Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk then combined in lethal fashion to wipe out the Lightning top order, only three of their top six making it into double figures, before 19-year-old Mady Villiers finished off the tail with 3 for 22.Put in to bat for the second time in the day, Stars had got off to another tentative start, with Bryony Smith and Sarah Taylor once again falling cheaply. By the end of the Powerplay they had accrued just 44 for 2 – an identical score to their semi-final Powerplay against Western Storm earlier in the day.Stars’ eventual total, though, was 21 runs clear of their semi-final score, with the difference this time being one player: Lee. Taking the Lightning bowlers by the scruff of the neck from the outset, she wasted no time in belting Jenny Gunn over mid-off for the first six of Finals Day, before punishing the fourth over from Sophie Devine for four consecutive boundaries. When her hundred came, brought up in characteristic fashion in the 16th over with a boundary through backward square leg, she had dished out similar punishments to each of the six Lightning bowlers. If any innings sums up Lee it was this one: far from pretty – at one point she swung and missed at the ball so hard that she ended up firmly on her backside behind the crease – yet nonetheless effective, built on sheer brute force. While she rode her luck throughout, surviving several chances off left-arm spinner Kirstie Gordon’s opening over – the closest a catch put down on the long-off boundary by Georgia Adams, when Lee was on 37 and had barely got going – it was to prove no consolation for the disillusioned Lightning attack. At the other end for much of the onslaught was captain Nat Sciver, the pair sharing a 111-run partnership for the third wicket. Sciver, fresh from her unbeaten 72 in the semi-final, was content to play second fiddle for much of the innings, though she produced some beautiful cover drives on her way to a 31-ball 40.Neither finished the innings unbeaten – leading tournament wicket-taker Gordon adding the scalp of Lee to her successes as she was finally caught at long-off in the 17th over – but a 15-run cameo from van Niekerk ensured Stars cleared 180.It was an intimidating total for Lightning and the loss of early wickets putting them on the back foot immediately. The injury of leading batsman Devine, who had to leave the field during Stars’ innings after being struck on the wrist fielding a ball struck by Sciver, did not help matters, the absence perhaps contributing to her early dismissal lbw to Kapp in the second over of the innings. van Niekerk also struck early, sending England’s Amy Jones back to the pavilion in the following over, before her two in two balls in the 10th did for Georgia Elwiss and Adams, and Loughborough sank to 63 for 6 at the halfway point. But it was Stars’ young bowlers who impressed most, Sophia Dunkley having the dangerous-looking Rachael Haynes caught at point and Villiers adding three wickets to her KSL haul, wrapping up the Lightning innings with a four-over spell that included 11 dot balls. In last year’s competition Stars received much criticism after failing to hand the ball to any of their non-internationals once. It was fitting, then, that it was their young bowlers who helped them finally, three seasons in, lift the KSL trophy.

Rangers and Clement table new deal for "brilliant" player; expected to sign

A new era awaits at Rangers, with Philippe Clement stepping into the technical area following Michael Beale's dismissal. The former AS Monaco manager doesn't exactly have an easy task on his hands, given that the Gers have already lost three games in the Scottish Premiership this season, and currently sit seven points adrift of table-toppers Celtic.

Already so far behind their Old Firm rivals, Clement may face a pressure-free start to life at Ibrox. Those at the club will know that it will not be an easy fix, and getting things right off the pitch will be the best step towards long-term improvement. And that could see one particular player sign a new contract at the club to ease any exit fears.

Latest Rangers contract news

Clement's first game in charge comes against Hibernian in a tough first test for his side. The international break could have handed him the chance to settle into life at Ibrox though, and decide just who his standout stars will be. In an ideal world, his first game will end in routine fashion to increase the confidence of his players that catching Celtic may not be such a fantasy this season.

Meanwhile, off the pitch, the latest Borna Barisic contract news is certainly positive. According to TeamTalk, the Gers have offered the left-back a new two-year deal at the club, which he is expected to sign to end any fears over a potential exit. Barisic's current contract comes to an end next summer, of course, which would allow him to start seeking his next club from January.

Having solved their managerial problem, however, Rangers have seemingly moved to put an end to any worries about the Croatian's future. After reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest, it seems as though Barisic is set to stay put at Ibrox.

How has Barisic performed this season?

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

Much like the rest of his Rangers teammates, Barisic hasn't been at his best this season. The left-back has at least been a standout on ocassions, however, with four assists to his name, a sign that things could yet improve. At 30-years-old, the left-back represents the type of player that Clement should look to lean on in the opening months of his tenure, with experience arguably the key to helping Rangers turn things around this season.

If the new manager can get the best out of Barisic, too, then he'll have himself the perfect option down the left-hand side. In top form, the Rangers man has earned praise from Neil McCann, who told BBC Sportsound after a 2-2 draw against Hibernian: "We said Rangers are liable to burst into life at any time – they did it there. You know in the final-third, generally, you get brilliant quality from Barisic. This time he puts in a fantastic ball, begging for someone to attack it.”

When considering his experience, and ability when at his best, it's no surprise that Rangers have offered Barisic a new deal. It's now up to the left-back to decide whether or not to put pen to paper.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Palmer remained unavailable for Southgate's selection during the loss to Dorival Junior's Brazil side for unknown reasons, however, the Chelsea star has trained normally all week with the national team and will remain in contention for the clash against Belgium on Tuesday. Henderson will also be up for selection as per Southgate.

  • WHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

Speaking to the media after the Brazil match, Southgate said: "The two boys trained today, so they’ve come through that okay. So they should join the group that will train tomorrow [Sunday], so we’ll go from there with that.

"Tuesday, Belgium have played a different eleven, or close to, so they’re going to be a bit fresher. But similar to tonight, we’re talking about a high-level game, a brilliant experience for the players, a chance to see new players again, build towards the summer."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The two players are currently at very different stages in their international and club careers but could be equally as important for Southgate when he leads his side to Germany for Euro 2024. The tournament is likely to be Henderson's last major tournament with his country, while Palmer is still looking for his third cap with the Three Lions and seems almost certain to be a part of Southgate's squad for the tournament.

Hasan Ali, Rashid Khan, Asghar Afghan fined for separate incidents

Pakistan’s Hasan Ali and Afghanistan’s Asghar Afghan and Rashid Khan have all been fined 15% of their match fees for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in separate incidents during their Super Four clash in the Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi on Friday. One demerit point was subsequently added to their disciplinary records. It took Afghan’s demerit-points count to two, having already received one in February 2017, within a period of two years.Hasan and Asghar were found to have violated Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”, while Rashid breached Article 2.1.7, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman upon his/her dismissal during an international match.”Hasan was penalised for threatening to throw the ball towards Hashmatullah Shahidi, after the batsman had driven it back to the bowler, in the 33rd over of Afghanistan’s innings.Afghan was pulled up for brushing shoulders with Hasan, the bowler, while completing a single four overs later. The incident involving Rashid came in the 47th over of Pakistan’s tense 258 chase, when the legspinner gave Asif Ali a send-off, holding his index finger up and staring into the eyes of the batsman. After the game, all the three players admitted to the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft.

Ten Hag could ditch Evans by unleashing Man Utd’s "excellent" academy gem

Manchester United will be hoping to rebound from their disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City when they face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup this evening – a repeat of the final from last season.

Of course, United won that match 2-0 and secured their first trophy for six years in the process but judging by the respective performances of both sides lately, the clash will be much closer.

There is no doubt Erik ten Hag is coming under some serious pressure due to the poor start the Old Trafford side have had to endure, winning only five of their first ten Premier League matches, while winning just once in three Champions League games.

This type of form simply isn’t good enough to satisfy the United faithful, who were clearly looking for the club to take the next step given how much of an impact the Dutchman made last term.

Going into a Manchester derby and starting 35-year-old Jonny Evans at centre-back, however, is a recipe for disaster, especially considering the funds United spent during the summer transfer window.

The Northern Irishman is the only player in the current squad to hold a Premier League winners medal, yet his display against City was underwhelming to say the least, and it highlights the massive gulf between the two teams.

Jonny Evans’ game vs Man City in Numbers

Evans’ performance was terrible to say the least and the only thing of note he did defensively was make four clearances during the match.

The defender failed to make a single tackle or interception, while he also contested four duels and failed to win a single one, showing how poor he was against players such as Erling Haaland, who clearly had a field day against the elder statesman of the United side.

Man United's Jonny Evans

To round things off, Evans also lost possession nine times while making two fouls and although Ten Hag is suffering from a host of injury problems in his squad, having to rely on a player who made just 14 appearances last season shows how poorly the club acted in the summer transfer market.

Raphael Varane could be an option for Ten Hag as he was an unused substitute for United on the weekend.

Raphael Varane’s season in numbers

The Frenchman has missed four games this season due to injury and while he didn’t make an appearance from the bench against City, Ten Hag is perhaps easing him back into the first team in order to not aggravate any more problems – despite suggesting that his absence was tactical last time out.

13

Varane’s 93% pass success rate is one of the highest among the United squad in the Premier League this term, while he has also scored once and kept one clean sheet across six matches thus far.

The former Real Madrid titan has lost possession just 3.7 times on average during his time on the pitch along with showcasing his impressive physicality by winning 100% of his aerial duels and there is no doubt he would be a major upgrade on Evans when he is ready to step back into the starting XI.

That being said, Ten Hag could perhaps rest the experienced ace for the clash against Newcastle this evening ahead of more important matches to come, with there are a couple of academy talents who could come into the senior fold and stake their claim for a surprise run in the team. – Rhys Bennett being a key example.

Rhys Bennett’s statistics at youth level

The 20-year-old has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Old Trafford side, yet he was involved in a tie against Real Betis towards the end of 2022 as the club were gearing back up for the domestic season returning following the World Cup hiatus.

Teammate Tom Heaton even lauded the youngster as “excellent” after impressing against the La Liga side, and he appears to be highly thought of at the club despite his lack of first-team action so far.

Man United's Rhys Bennett

Ten Hag did include him in the matchday squads for the matches against Burnley in the League Cup and the league tie against Nottingham Forest during the festive season and while he failed to emerge from the bench, journalist Samuel Luckhurst had plenty of praise for the young starlet.

He said: “Pleased for Rhys Bennett he is on the bench. Played well against Real Betis last week, impressed in the Youth Cup run last season, good character and a natural leader.”

His leadership qualities were on show a few months prior to this as he helped lead United to the FA Youth Cup in May 2022, even scoring in the final against Forest and if he continues to work hard and impress, a first team bow will happen sooner rather than later.

The centre-back has made 63 appearances across the U21, U19 and U18 youth teams at United, and he has gained plenty of experience over the previous few years.

The clash against Newcastle this evening represents another chance for United to move deeper into a cup competition and considering Ten Hag reached two finals last term, he clearly enjoys a knockout tournament.

With the struggles the Red Devils have endured this season however, the tie tonight gives the Dutchman a chance to potentially rotate his squad and give some players a rest ahead of more important ties, with a vital away trip to Fulham to come on Saturday afternoon.

Evans should certainly be ditched from the starting XI against the Magpies, especially if Ten Hag has any ambition of actually winning the tie, while it could well be too soon for Varane to make a return from the start, with a second-half substitution more likely for the 30-year-old.

This leaves the door ajar for a youngster like Bennett to come in and perform well, especially as he has nothing to lose in the process.

It would be an excellent experience for the defender and will give him the confidence that there is a proper pathway at United should he continue his wonderful development.

Ten Hag has a few big calls to make with regard to his starting XI tonight, but will Bennett be one of the young stars who is given an unlikely start? Only time will tell.

Wayne Parnell loses Cobras contract after decision to go Kolpak

The Cape Cobras have discontinued the contract of South Africa pace bowler Wayne Parnell with immediate effect. Parnell, 29, signed a Kolpak deal with Worcestershire last week, having just been part of the county’s Vitality T20 Blast success. That decision effectively brought his international career to an end, and his unavailability for national selection has now prompted the cancellation of his Cobras’ contract.”The board of the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras unanimously decided to discontinue Parnell’s Cobras contract,” Nabeal Dien, Cobras’ chief executive officer, said. “It was a tough decision, as he was a senior and successful member of the Cobras squad in the past, winning four awards at the Cobras Player Awards in 2015-16. He was voted Player of the Year at that awards ceremony.”Parnell last played for South Africa in October 2017 against Bangladesh and featured in just two matches during the Ram Slam T20 last season, battling injury before losing his national contract earlier this year.Parnell has a deal to play in the upcoming Afghanistan Cricket League in Sharjah, cutting into the time he would have been available to play domestic cricket in South Africa this season.”His decision to sign Kolpak and also to participate in the Afghanistan Premier League has made him available for the Cape Cobras for a very limited period, while he would also not be available for international selection in future,” Dien said. While limited availability may have played a part, it appears Parnell’s decision to follow the likes of Morne Morkel, Kyle Abbott and Rilee Rossouw in taking up a Kolpak deal is at the crux of the Cobras’ decision. “We pride ourselves in being a conveyor belt for international South African players and it’s part and parcel of our mandate,” Dien said. Those concerns were echoed by Corrie van Zyl, Cricket South Africa’s general manager of cricket. “Every player who turns Kolpak, is one less that can be eligible for the South African team and therefore CSA needs to look at ways to protect itself against the loss of experienced and younger players,” Van Zyl said. “Our mandate is to produce players at domestic level who will represent South Africa.”We are concerned about the amount of players who have signed a Kolpak agreement, which makes them unavailable for national selection,” van Zyl added. “Although the experience of the Kolpak players is valuable, CSA needs to ensure that those players, who are still committed to playing for the Proteas in the future, are afforded the opportunities to develop.”Every franchise is entitled to select two Kolpak players in their playing eleven, but those Kolpak players must be paid from the franchise’s own funds, and therefore it is really up to the franchises to determine the value of that player to their team.”

The 3 dream signings that West Brom should make in January

West Bromwich Albion could well be just two or three players away from being a side that can compete with the very best in the Championship and fight it out for promotion, Carlos Corberan's Baggies just outside of the playoff spots in the second tier on goal difference in seventh position.

Defeat to Southampton last time out was the first defeat suffered by Corberan's men since the 6th of October, winning three matches from five before the Saints got the better of them 2-1 at the weekend just gone.

West Brom could use January as an opportunity to bolster their group and add more quality, making them a more feared prospect to take on subsequently with the Baggies boldly aspiring for promotion.

Here are three dream players that would undoubtedly strengthen Corberan's side in their pursuit of a return to the Premier League…

1 Callum Styles

The current Barnsley midfielder is a man in high demand, attracting interest from a whole host of Championship suitors which includes Coventry City, Watford and Millwall alongside West Brom on top of Premier League relegation candidates Burnley and Sheffield United eyeing up the 23-year-old allegedly.

Styles' adaptability and versatility is a standout trait from the Tykes midfielder's game – adept at playing in a holding midfield role but also equally as effective further up the pitch behind the forwards as an attacking outlet- which is why there is such a frenzied level of interest in the Hungary international.

Last season, with Millwall on loan, he also showed he is still cut out for the demands of second-tier football – making 22 appearances for the Lions, netting once.

West Brom do have strong personnel centrally already, with ex Chelsea man Nathaniel Chalobah and former Leeds United player Alex Mowatt just a few options at Corberan's disposal, but Styles is still a target worth pursuing this January.

2 Ben Brereton Diaz

Villarreal forward Ben Brereton Diaz.

The Baggies could do with some firepower added to their ranks in attack, with Ben Brereton Diaz providing that clinical goalscoring edge in spades last time he was regularly playing in the Championship.

West Brom attacker Brandon Thomas-Asante has managed only five goals from 15 games, the only semi-potent striker in the squad currently.

The ex Blackburn Rovers striker could well be loaned out of the building by Villarreal or sold outright amidst a slow start to life out in Spain – the 24-year-old yet to score in La Liga from just two full starts after joining in the summer – with a Championship destination possibly on the cards to get the Chile international firing on all cylinders again.

In his final full season at Ewood Park, the ex-Rovers star-man would manage 14 goals in total before Villarreal came calling. Could Brereton-Diaz be tempted for a short-term return to England with West Brom?

3 Nesta Guinness-Walker

Reading's Nesta Guinness Walker in action with Stevenage's Kane Smith

This third and final transfer shout might well not come in and instantly start for the Baggies, but Guinness-Walker is certainly one for the future at Reading to keep tabs on.

With the situation behind the scenes with the Royals tumultuous to say the least – ownership issues resulting in points deductions for the League One team this season leaving them submerged in a relegation dogfight – Guinness-Walker will be tempted to walk away from the club with Reading willing to offload their young full-back for cheap too possibly.

Linked with the ex AFC Wimbledon man in the summer, the left-back hasn't quite performed this campaign for his current employers to the highest standards possible but there's potential for the 24-year-old to blossom into a capable defender for the Baggies if he was signed.

With a lack of competition present for Conor Townsend's left-back spot at the Hawthorns currently too, Guinness-Walker could provide that friendly in-squad rivalry if signed.
