South Australia trump Victoria in exciting finish

Jake Lehmann’s 63 off 25 balls, and exploits from Callum Ferguson and Jake Weatherald, took South Australia to victory over Victoria and up to second place in the tournament table

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2017Jake Lehmann gets down on one knee to play the scoop•Getty ImagesA powerful batting display lifted South Australia to victory over Victoria and up to second place on the domestic limited overs tournament table on an entertaining afternoon at North Sydney Oval.Jake Lehmann crashed 63 from a mere 25 balls to put that capstone on a Redbacks innings that also featured telling contributions from Jake Weatherald (71 off 51 balls) and the captain Callum Ferguson (73 from 72). Cameron Valente then chimed in for 36 off 17 balls included a quartet of sixes – he and Lehmann added an eye-popping 84 in 33 balls.Their aggression made it a difficult debut for the teenage allrounder Will Sutherland, who had the returned figures of 1 for 56 from eight overs before being run out seeking a second run in the Bushrangers’ ailing pursuit. However, the heaviest punishment was inflicted upon the sometime Australian ODI seamer Scott Boland, who was hammered for 75 from six overs.Lacking an injured Cameron White at the top of the order, Victoria were given a fighting chance in their chase by Matt Short’s fluent 81 and a sparkling century from Travis Dean. However the dismissal of the captain Peter Handscomb for only 21 helped stall the Bushrangers’ progress, and Valente’s three wickets helped ensure that the Redbacks finished 11 runs in credit.

Leeds’ £20k-p/w "Diamond" Turns Down Move To New Club

Leeds United forward Wilfried Gnonto has turned down the opportunity to join Premier League side Everton this summer, according to fresh reports.

When did Wilfried Gnonto join Leeds?

The Italy international only arrived at Elland Road from FC Zurich last summer, but having impressed during his 28 senior appearances in his debut season in the top-flight, he’s attracted significant interest from the Toffees, especially following relegation to the Championship.

Football Insider previously reported that the Merseyside outfit were leading the race to sign the 19-year-old, who is expected to leave despite still having four years remaining on his contract, but they haven’t got very far in their attempts to lure him to Goodison Park.

Sky Sports have claimed that the Whites have rejected several approaches for their winger which has left Sean Dyche’s side since turning their attention towards alternatives in the form of Leicester City’s former loan star Tete and Southampton’s Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Daniel Farke has now been given a further indication that he’ll be able to hang on to his prized attacker.

Is Wilfried Gnonto leaving Leeds?

According to TEAMtalk, Gnonto has "made it clear" to his representative that a switch to Everton is "not appealing to him" ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Serie A clubs also hold an interest so there's a chance that a move to his homeland "could still be on the cards", but as it stands, it's stated that he would "prefer to stay" in Yorkshire.

The Whites "retain an element of confidence" that they will therefore keep the talented teenager to help with the club's immediate push for promotion.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Whilst Gnonto departing for the Serie A still remains a possibility, Leeds and Farke have received a huge boost by learning that their “diamond”, as lauded by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, has turned down the chance to join Everton, and it’s important that they continue to do whatever they can to retain his services beyond the summer.

The LS11 outfit's £20k-per-week earner last season racked up six goal contributions (four assists and two goals) in 24 Premier League outings whilst recording a total of 50 shot-creating actions over the course of the campaign, which was the fourth-highest tally throughout the squad, via FBRef, highlighting his desire to produce moments of quality for himself and his teammates.

The Verbania native also provides the boss with excellent versatility with his ability to operate in seven various positions, including everywhere across the frontline and even three roles in the midfield, making him a great option to have available with the possible injuries that could occur from the relentless amount of fixtures in the second tier.

Having already sanctioned the permanent exits of Rodrigo and Tyler Roberts, alongside Robin Koch, Maximilian Wober, Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca who have all completed loan moves elsewhere, Farke will be determined not to lose any more of his first team stars in the final weeks of the window, especially Gnonto.

Arsenal: Arteta Could Sign Huge Jorginho Upgrade In £48m-rated "Warrior"

Arsenal could be set to continue their summer spending, with another lucrative swoop to push them ever closer to the Premier League title…

Is Nicolo Barella leaving Inter Milan?

Despite having welcomed Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice all for large fees, it would be easy to assume that Mikel Arteta had finished up for this window, content with the vast improvements he has made to his starting XI.

However, FootballTransfers now suggest otherwise, as they claim that the Gunners are considering a stunning swoop to sign Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

Having utilised the method of tempting the player before the club when conducting their transfer business this window, the news that the Italy international is interested in an Emirates switch has likely stoked the flames of the potential deal, which is set to rack up another astronomical fee.

With their club transfer record already having been shattered last month, FootballTransfers suggest this deal could come to a far more modest sum, with his valuation sitting at €56m (£48m).

How good is Nicolo Barella?

To acquire another central midfielder would be to essentially add the finishing touches to a starting side capable of battling with anyone across Europe.

However, it would also see most others within the squad slip further down the pecking order, with Jorginho, in particular, likely to see less and less game time given he is far from the quality of his compatriot, and crucially five years his senior.

Having been a true stalwart across his impressive career, the 31-year-old always offers a calming influence in the engine room, with his match intelligence second to none.

As such, he impressed when joining in January, earning praise from his manager:

"The biggest quality he has is he makes the rest of the people look better, better than what you actually are. He’s made a huge impact already on the boys, on the staff and hopefully our supporters can see that as well and give him the support he needs. I thought he was tremendous today."

jorginho

And yet, he completely pales in comparison to the Inter maestro, who offers everything Jorginho can and more.

Last season saw the Champions League finalist post a 7.08 average rating in Serie A, buoyed by his 11 goal contributions, 85% pass accuracy, 1.6 key passes and 1.4 tackles per game, via Sofascore.

His combative presence in the midfield would be a welcome one, and yet he boasts the nastiness needed to thrive in there too.

After all, talent scout Jacek Kulig did brand Barella a "little warrior".

Jorginho, across both Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League, could only narrowly surpass those aforementioned figures in tackles (1.9 per game) and pass accuracy (86%), to emphasise the gulf in class between the two.

To further outline Barella's quality alongside others in his role, when compared to midfielders in Europe he ranks in the top 7% for non-penalty goals per 90, the top 19% for progressive passes per 90, and the top 10% for progressive carries per 90 and the top, via FBref.

It is clear that the creative powerhouse would add so much to Arteta's side, with his arrival sure to spell bad news for Jorginho given just how far behind he is from his Italy teammate.

West Ham: Irons Make Contact For "Dominant" Forward

Journalist Sacha Tavolieri has shared news on West Ham United's search for forward options and it involves Belgium international Johan Bakayoko.

Who will West Ham sign next?

The Hammers, much to manager David Moyes' delight, have sealed their first major signing of this summer window in midfielder Edson Alvarez after weeks of waiting.

For a long period, West Ham were the only English top flight not to bring in a single player, with the east Londoners seeing transfers hijacked and their best players move on to pastures new.

Declan Rice completed his £105 million move to Arsenal, while striker Gianluca Scamacca left for Atalanta after just one full season in claret and blue.

Man City are also chasing a deal for Brazil international and West Ham star Lucas Paqueta, dealing a real worry for Moyes, but the arrival of Alvarez comes as a welcome boost.

“We’re really pleased to add Edson to our squad,” Moyes said.

“The midfield area was one we were especially keen to strengthen this summer – and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department.

“He’s an experienced international player, who has enjoyed great success for both club and country during his career to date. We’re excited about welcoming to West Ham and seeing him play his part in English and European competition for the club.”

West Ham are closing in other deals too, with the club agreeing a fee for Man United defender Harry Maguire.

Scamacca's departure, though, leaves the Irons with a gaping hole to fill as techinical director Tim Steidten, sporting director Mark Noble, chairman David Sullivan and Moyes get to work.

They have been linked with the likes of Bournemouth forward Dominic Solanke, Arsenal's Folarin Balogun and Montpeillier striker Elye Wahi this week alone.

West Ham United manager David Moyes.

Reporter Tavolieri, sharing news on X, has an update for Hammers supporters as they also eye a move for PSV Eindhoven star Bakayoko.

West Ham are thought to have expressed their interest in the Belgian, essentially informing PSV of their desire to sign the attacker.

However, Serie A champions Napoli are thought to be in the mix as well, dealing West Ham some stern competition in the hunt for Bakayoko's signature.

"Discussions still ongoing with Napoli for Johan Bakayoko," wrote Tavolieri.

"The PSV is still as intransigent and this does not facilitate the evolution of the file. EXCL. West Ham United & 1 other unnamed Premier League club have recently expressed interest in the Diables Rouges. It will move again."

How good is Johan Bakayoko?

Over his 23 Dutch top flight appearances, Bakayoko scored five goals and assisted five others last term, all while ranking among their best for attempts at goal and successful take-ons per 90 (WhoScored).

The 20-year-old is still very young and has potential to grow his game even more, a fact not lost on Ruud van Nistelrooy, who called him a "dominant" forward.

“He is so dominant, sometimes you forget that he is eighteen," said the former Man United striker two years ago.

“He’s a boy who, if he continues to invest in what he’s doing now, hopefully at the end of the season can make a nice step towards first. He’s worked hard on multiple facets of his game, and that’s showing through now. Maintaining this level in the longer term is his goal.”

Shami six-for hands Bengal bonus-point win

Mohammed Shami’s 6 for 61 earned Bengal a bonus-point win over Chhattisgarh in Raipur. Following on after their first innings score of 110, the hosts were reduced from 211 for 4 to 259 all out, losing by an innings and 160 runs.Abhimanyu Chauhan’s 115 on the third day had powered Chhattisgarh past 200, along with a 71-run contribution from Ashutosh Singh. Shami provided the breakthrough as he dismissed Ashutosh, breaking their 172-run second-wicket stand. He also dismissed centurion Chauhan before stumps.Resuming from their overnight score of 229 for 5, Chattisgarh were dismantled within the first twelve overs on the fourth day as Shami and Ashok Dinda ran through the rest of the order. Dinda starred with a 10-for in the match, having picked seven wickets in Chhattisgarh’s first innings. In Dharamsala, Goa openers Sumiran Amonkar (137) and Swapnil Asnodkar (167) smashed hundreds to overhaul their 370-run first innings deficit against Himachal Pradesh, to ensure a fighting draw for the visitors.Goa finished the final day on 426 for 2, courtesy the 299-run opening stand between Amonkar and Asnodkar. The captain Sagun Kamat also added 67 as the HP bowlers were made to toil all day. The hosts used nine bowlers, but none could take a single wicket, as both openers were run out. HP collected the extra points, courtesy their mammoth lead in the first innings, having scored 625 for 7 in their first innings.

Tottenham: Levy Now Set To Sell Four Spurs Stars

Journalist Wayne Veysey says Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has personally green-lit the exits of four Spurs stars this summer.

Who will Tottenham sell?

Star striker Harry Kane's departure comes as their most high-profile sale to date this summer, and possibly their biggest exit since Gareth Bale left for Real Madrid nearly 10 years ago.

Kane made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich on Friday, grabbing an assist for Leroy Sane inside the first few minutes and a goal therafter.

His presence will be sorely missed at Tottenham but the 30-year-old has now joined Harry Winks, Lucas Moura and defender Joe Rodon as the already-confirmed departures of Ange Postecoglou's squad.

Despite the huge financial windfall as a result of Kane's sale, Postecoglou has explained to the media that Spurs may need to sell a few more players before making another major signing.

The reality of it is we can't just keep acquiring players," said the Spurs boss.

"We've got too big a squad as it is. It affects the training, the players themselves because they all want to play and be involved.

"It's not so much one has to happen for the other but our focus at the moment is trimming the squad down and seeing where that takes us in terms of reinforcements. We're assessing that on a daily basis. There's still two weeks to go in the window and I'm sure you'll see some movement."

ange-postecoglou-1

Trimming Tottenham's bloated squad is therefore a top priority before deadline day on September 1, and it is believed Levy has personally stepped in after behind-scenes talks with Postecoglou.

Indeed, according to Veysey, in a piece for Football Insider, Levy has green-lit exits for Spurs quartet Hugo Lloris, Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon and young defender Japhet Tanganga.

"Four Tottenham Hotspur stars are in talks to join new clubs before the window shuts," explained Veysey.

"Lazio are close to signing Hugo Lloris, Inter Milan are pursuing Japhet Tanganga, Rennes are working on a deal to sign Tanguy Ndombele and Real Sociedad are negotiating the capture of Sergio Reguilon.

"The senior quartet have all been told they are free to go by the 1 September cut-off by chairman Daniel Levy after talks with Ange Postecoglou."

It's added that Tottenham are working to reshape their squad before the cut off and the aforementioned players appear to be first nominated for the chopping block by Levy.

Should Tottenham sell?

We believe the writing is on the wall for all four of Tanganga, Lloris, Reguilon and Ndombele – who have all struggled recently.

Lloris stands out as the most pivotal figure, though, and has been Tottenham's long-serving number one goalkeeper since he signed from Lyon in 2012.

Ndombele has failed to live up to his once club-record price tag, having been pushed to the side by a succession of Postecoglou's predecessors.

Reguilon spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid, where he arguably failed to establish himself, with Tanganga also struggling to fight his way into the starting eleven.

It could be time for a much-needed change of scenery as the out-of-favour bunch look to re-establish their careers before it's too late.

Moeen, Finn to miss first two tour matches

Moeen Ali and Steven Finn have been ruled out of involvement in the first two games of England’s Ashes tour.Scans on the pair have confirmed that Moeen (left side) and Finn (left knee) will not be fit for selection for either the two-day warm-up match starting in Perth on Saturday, or next week’s four-day match played under lights in Adelaide. It means both players will have a maximum of one warm-up match – the four-day game in Townsville starting on November 15 – ahead of the Ashes. It appears the injury to Finn is the more serious. While Moeen believes he could, if necessary, play at present, such is his importance to the squad that he will be rested as a precaution and not risked until the match in Townsville. The England camp are not unduly concerned by the possibility of his being sidelined any longer than that.Finn’s knee injury is more of a concern. He will be monitored by the England medical team over the next week when a further discussion on his fitness will take place. No date has been given for his return though it does seems the scan results are somewhat better than were feared. He sustained the injury while batting in the nets on Friday. Whether it was an impact blow – he appeared to jam the bat or a combination of the bat and the ball into his left knee – remains unclear. It seems he also twisted his leg while attempting to play the next delivery and that is when he started to experience more pain.Any further setback for Finn would be a bitterly cruel blow for a man deemed “unselectable” on the previous Ashes tour four years ago. Having fought his way back to the brink of the side – and having enjoyed some fine moments in England and South Africa since – he had a good opportunity to earn some happier memories of Ashes tours. The fitness issues have persuaded England to re-think their plans for the two-day warm-up match against a Western Australia XI starting on Saturday. While Joe Root had initially hoped to field something close to his best team – he suggested on Thursday England would pick 12 players for the match – he has now decided to play 13 to ensure none of them are overworked. That means that every fit player except the reserve keeper, Ben Foakes, can expect an opportunity over the weekend.England had injury worries over Steven Finn and Moeen Ali•Getty Images

The most intense competition for places would appear to be between Jake Ball and Craig Overton for the final seam-bowling spot and Dawid Malan and Gary Ballance for the No. 5 batting spot. At present, it seems Overton and Malan have their noses in front but a persuasive performance over the weekend could yet sway things.Meanwhile the coach of the Western Australia XI, Stewart Walters – who is usually one of the assistant coaches for the team but finds himself thrust into the spotlight with Justin Langer and co otherwise engaged with the Shield side – warned that his inexperienced team, led by Australia international Nathan Coulter-Nile, had the ability to hurt England in the next couple of days.In particular, he suggested young fast bowler Lance Morris should enjoy the WACA surface, while Jake Carder recently made a maiden List A century against South Australia.”Lance Morris bowls fast,” Walters said. “It’s a great opportunity for him. And Nathan Coulter-Nile will bowl 100% and give it everything he’s got. He’ll be aggressive.”We want to be ruthless with the ball. We want to make the first 10 runs as hard work as they can be. We’re here to win the game.”While Walters’ comments are perfectly reasonable – indeed, he could hardly be expected to say anything else – there is a sense that Root, in particular, is tiring of the pre-series rhetoric. Responding to yet another enquiry over the “wounds” and “scars” England are carrying from their thrashing in 2013-14, Root provided a gentle but somewhat world-weary reminder that England had actually won the last encounter between these two teams and currently hold the Ashes.”There’s been a lot of talk about last time round,” Root said. “But we’re a completely different side and so are they.”Of course, they’ll try to bring up all sorts of stuff like that. But we’ve obviously played a lot of cricket since then and have played against Australia. And it went quite well for us.”Fortunately for everyone, the time for talking is nearly over.

Saifuddin, Bravo star in Comilla's eight-wicket win

The medium-pacers helped pull things back for Comilla Victorians after Chittagong had put on 80 in eight overs, before Jos Buttler and Marlon Samuels helped them chase 144

Comilla Victorians inflicted a collapse on Chittagong Vikings, before an efficient chase took them to an eight-wicket win. Mohammad Saifuddin and Dwayne Bravo starred with the ball for Comilla, before Jos Buttler scored 48 to help them chase 144.Chittagong would rue giving away a good start, having reached 91 for 1 in the 10th over, but hardly making any noise in the final half of the innings – making only 52 runs and losing six wickets. After Buttler had set up Comilla’s chase, Marlon Samuels and Imrul Kayes finished the job with efficiency as the Chittagong bowlers couldn’t quite force the issue.Soumya’s reverse-sweep headlines fast startLuke Ronchi had struck a six off the first ball of the third over but when Soumya timed his reverse-sweep to perfection, Comilla knew they were in trouble. The left-hander had been in woeful form for much of Bangladesh’s tour of South Africa, except for the two T20Is at the end.The switch-hit was followed by Ronchi striking Al-Amin Hossain for consecutive fours in the next over. He then went on to hit twin sixes off Dwayne Bravo, the first one a fantastic piece of timing despite being beaten by the slower ball. Soumya struck two more fours in the sixth over before Ronchi fell for 40 in the same over, having struck three sixes and four fours in his 21-ball knock.Dilshan Munaweera tried to keep up the pace while Comilla also erred in the field. Having dropped Ronchi when he was on nine in the second over, Al-Amin’s movement at deep midwicket was astounding as he didn’t get under a Soumya mis-hit. He signalled that it was the sun but he was wearing a cap; Bravo, the bowler, was unhappy. Chittagong reached 91 for 1 after 10 overs, with one eye on a 200-plus score.A stuttering collapseComilla’s fightback began in the 12th over, when Munaweera needlessly scooped one to Marlon Samuels at short fine leg. Saifuddin then got into the game with two consecutive wickets in the 14th over. Sarkar missed a paddle sweep to be bowled before Anamul Haque was caught at long-on for three. After three more wickets fell, Sikandar Raza struck two fours in the last over – there were three in the last 10 overs – to take them past the 140-mark.Buttler gets underwayLiton Das and Jos Buttler let fly from the second over of the 144-run chase, hitting a flurry of fours and sixes. Liton struck Shuvo for a four through the covers and a swept six over fine-leg. Taskin Ahmed was hit through point over mid-on for a four and six respectively by Buttler. Sunzamul Islam was given the triple treatment – a four through midwicket, a blast over long-on for a six and a chip over midwicket for another four.Subashis Roy trapped Liton leg-before in the fifth over, after which Buttler and Imrul Kayes added 57 runs for the second wicket. Buttler was caught behind off Subashis too, after making a 42-ball 48 with three fours and two sixes.A well-orchestrated finishSamuels and Kayes, didn’t allow any more hiccups in the Comilla chase, adding the remaining 44 runs in just 3.4 overs. Samuels struck four boundaries and a six in his unbeaten 18-ball 35, while Kayes struck a four and a six in his 31-ball 33. Comilla won with 16 balls to spare. What they said”Sometimes it happens when you have 80-odd runs and you are going ten an over, you starting thinking ahead to 200-plus. I think in the coming games we need to be very careful about that in the middle overs, even if we are playing a T20 game. We need to be sensible.”

Liverpool: Klopp Eyeing Own Reece James In £15m Gem Who "Handled" Salah

Liverpool are interested in signing Brighton & Hove Albion left-back Pervis Estupinan this summer, with manager Jurgen Klopp impressed by the Ecuadorian's performances in the Premier League.

What's the latest on Pervis Estupinan to Liverpool?

According to FootballTransfers, the Reds have expressed a concrete interest in signing Estupinan after raiding the Seagulls earlier this summer for the £35m Alexis Mac Allister.

There are believed to be concerns over Andy Robertson's fitness levels and form in Liverpool's tinkered system, and Estupinan could be the Scotsman's long-term heir for the Anfield side.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The report claims that Klopp's side were offered the opportunity to sign the 25-year-old from Villarreal last summer, but he ultimately chose to pen a £15m deal with the Seagulls.

How good is Pervis Estupinan?

It's something of a disservice to Robertson and all that he has done for Liverpool since signing from Hull City for just £10m to suggest that he is finished after a smattering of subpar showings, with the 29-year-old having played 267 matches for the Merseyside club, scoring eight goals and supplying 63 assists.

The 61-cap Scotland captain has played an important role in gleaning the full sweep of silverware under Klopp's wing, though admittedly was "poor" – as described by journalist James Nalton – toward the business end of the 22/23 campaign as the rest of the team unearthed a late purple patch.

He did record an average Sofascore rating over the campaign of 6.95, completing 84% of his passes, registering eight assists, making 1.6 key passes and 1.3 clearances per game, though his form suffered a discernible deterioration over the final weeks.

Estupinan has thrived on English soil over the past year, recording an average Sofascore rating of 6.89 during his maiden Albion campaign, also completing 84% of his passes, averaging 1.5 key passes, 1.7 tackles and one clearance per outing and scoring one goal and supplying five assists – hailed as the "complete player" by his boss Roberto De Zerbi.

As per FBref, the South American gem ranks among the top 17% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 16% for shot-creating actions, the top 14% for passes attempted and the top 16% for progressive passes and progressive carries per 90.

Such a 'complete' skill set has drawn comparisons to Chelsea's newly-appointed captain Reece James, with FBref likening the two players.

The England international ranks among the top 17% of positional peers for goals, the top 5% for shot-creating actions, the top 7% for passes attempted, the top 9% for progressive passes and the top 10% for progressive carries per 90, highlighting his superlative rounded qualities.

Pervis Estupinan in Premier League action for Brighton & Hove Albion.

The £250k-per-week phenom has been described as "the best in the world" in his position by pundit Ian Wright and was instrumental in winning the Champions League in 20/21.

While the 23-year-old spent the lion's share of the past season out injured, he did showcase his ability across his 16 appearances in the English top-flight, recording an average rating of 7.19, completing 91% of his passes, averaging 1.3 key passes and 1.9 tackles per game, succeeding with 64% of his ground duels and 69% of his dribbles.

Estupinan is not quite at this refined level yet but he is definitely making the increments to lead toward a role as a first-class phenom at the highest level, and with Klopp a keen admirer, a move could be forthcoming, if not this summer, then perhaps during the winter or even in one year.

After all, the 35-cap international was praised to have "handled [Mohamed] Salah exceptionally" by football content creator and senior reporter Kendall Rowan during Villarreal's 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final second leg in May 2021, forging two clearances and interceptions, making three key passes and succeeding with both of his attempted dribbles.

Liverpool's Egyptian focal point did earn an assist and created two key passes, but mustered only one off-target shot and one blocked effort all game, marshalled well by the all-encompassing former Yellow Submarines left-back.

He boasts the full package, and if Klopp does decide to target a new left-sided full-back in the near future, Estupinan is the man for the job.
