Everton are in desperate need of reinforcements in their attacking threat following a difficult relegation scrap last season and now a new update has emerged on the club's pursuit of a top transfer target.
What's the latest on Everton's interest in Viktor Gyokeres?
According to the Daily Mail, the Toffees could use Ellis Simms as a bargaining chip to get a deal done to sign Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres.
As per the report, the Merseyside outfit remain keen on making Gyokeres their frontman next season, with huge interest in Simms from a number of Championship clubs including the Sky Blues, as well as Ipswich Town and Swansea City.
It's thought that Everton are looking to offer their young goalscorer plus cash to secure the Sweden international's signature this summer, but are facing competition from a whole host of rivals, ranging from Sporting Lisbon to the likes of Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United.
Should Everton swap Simms for Gyokeres?
There is no doubt that Sean Dyche will be making it his priority to strengthen the forward line during the summer transfer window after Everton struggled to cause little threat in front of goal last season.
Only Wolves scored fewer goals (31) than the Merseysiders (34) over the 38-game campaign which was a massive contributor to their struggle to maintain their Premier League status and left them teetering on the edge just two points clear of the drop on the final day.
Even the three relegated sides found the net more regularly, which is damning.
As a result, the signing of a prolific and trustworthy striker will be the bare minimum for Everton to secure ahead of next season and if Gyokeres could continue his incredible goal-scoring form with a step up to the top flight it would certainly improve performances.
Coventry's goalscoring machine has a reported £25m price tag and was the second top goalscorer in the Championship last season scoring a whopping 21 goals, as well as registering 10 assists with a goal contribution every 129 minutes over his 48 league appearances, an output that would be highly valued at Goodison Park.
viktor-gyokeres-everton-premier-league-transfers
In comparison, his positional peers at Everton did not even come close to his output with Neal Maupay and Ellis Simms only scoring one goal each in the Premier League, whilst Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the back of the net only twice as numerous injuries plagued his ability to get into form.
Gyokeres has earned huge praise for his stand-out performances in the second tier, with Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray even comparing the target man to Erling Haaland:
"He looks a yard more powerful and a yard quicker than everyone else, he’s a really confident boy.
"I don’t want to say he should test himself in the Premier League but who is like him in the Premier League at the moment?
"Who is too fast, too strong and too big, you would suggest Haaland is like that and Gyokeres in this league looks a yard faster and stronger than the players he plays against in the Championship.
"The way he buys himself space to shoot is pretty impressive and Coventry did well to hold onto him, he looks a really talented boy."
With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Everton to offer Simms as part of a deal to sign Gyokeres this summer as the striker could make an immediate impact in the final third to ensure the team can compete comfortably and kill games next season.
Australia’s captains Steven Smith and Meg Lanning jointly contacted Cricket Australia to ask that the board respect the Australian Cricketers Association as the players’ collective bargaining agent
Daniel Brettig15-Feb-2017Australia’s captains Steven Smith and Meg Lanning jointly contacted Cricket Australia to ask that the board respect the Australian Cricketers Association as the players’ collective bargaining agent, and stated that further attempts to the deal directly with the players would be a distraction from the performances of the national teams. As the board and the ACA attempt to work through drastically divergent positions over an MOU due for renewal in June, ESPNcricinfo has learned that Smith and Lanning felt compelled to write to CA chief executive James Sutherland, in a letter co-signed by their deputies David Warner and Alex Blackwell. The correspondence, delivered between the Brisbane and Melbourne Test matches against Pakistan last December, after talks between the two parties broke down, asked Sutherland that CA deal with the ACA as the players’ representative and called for ending attempts to go around the association by communicating directly with the players. The ACA confirmed the existence of the letter when contacted by ESPNcricinfo. It followed the invitation of Smith and Warner, alongside national team coach Darren Lehmann, to a dinner with the CA board directors and executives two days before the Melbourne ODI against New Zealand on December 9. That was trailed by a series of emailed communications from CA to all national and state-contracted players in Australia that sought to explain the board’s position. These included CA’s full initial submission, which stated among other things that only the top male contracted players deserved to continue to earn a fixed percentage of Australian cricket revenue. By contrast, the ACA are seeking, in a unified agreement for men and women, to expand the revenue-sharing model to include all players and also an expanded definition of that revenue. The MOU has not previously included female players.A subsequent email from team performance manager Pat Howard to the players sought to clarify the board’s pregnancy clause after it became the subject of heated argument during the Gabba Test against Pakistan. That email, in which Howard reiterated his view that he did not want to see the players become “the meat in the sandwich”, was a catalyst for the national team’s leaders to indicate to Sutherland that they were feeling quite the opposite.Earlier that week, CA had suspended negotiations with the ACA on the premise that the public slanging match between the two parties had begun to use oxygen that would otherwise be occupied by the Test matches and the Big Bash League.”Cricket Australia is committed to a negotiation that is conducted in good faith between the two parties,” CA said in a statement at the time, “but will not take part in a process which seeks to draw its players into a public dispute. Players deserve the opportunity to focus on the game, rather than being distracted by a negotiation that should be conducted in a professional and confidential manner.”Sutherland had previously kept at arm’s length from MOU negotiations, leaving them largely to CA’s head of strategy and people Kevin Roberts, head of team performance Howard, and David Peever, the CA chairman. Peever, an advocate of industrial relations reform when he was managing director of the mining giant Rio Tinto, has also involved his own IR advisor Ken Bacon.Smith and Lanning’s letter confirmed beyond doubt that the players were not wavering in their stance alongside the ACA, and that they wished to see negotiations resume in a more constructive manner. When Sutherland next spoke publicly about the breakdown in talks, he offered the most conciliatory words from the board in some weeks.”I think the facts of the matter are that both organisations have a lot more in common than they have not, and from that perspective, it’s all in the interest of the game, ensuring the game’s better,” Sutherland told ABC Radio during the Boxing Day Test. This week, Sutherland said the two parties still have an enormous amount of ground to cover. “I don’t think we’re close to a resolution,” he said. “We’ve got to work through a process of discussion on all sorts of different issues, there’s an agreement with a whole lot of different components to it.”Perhaps a little more complicated than it has been before where we’re wanting to professionalise the women’s game even more and to make sure there’s one collective agreement for men and women, so all those things need to be stepped through. We’ve got plenty of time, but at the same time, there are plenty of things to discuss. We’re down to it and we’ll progress, I’m confident of that.”
Manchester United have had an opening offer of €35m (£31m) for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund rejected immediately, according to reports from Italy.
Which striker are Man United signing?
Man United are still keen on signing a new striker this summer, but they have recently been hit with a double blow, as journalist Alex Crook has recently reported they are set to miss out on both Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.
Having seemingly missed out on two of their main targets, it has now been reported United could make a move for a low-cost alternative in FC Porto's Mehdi Taremi, who is said to be appreciated by manager Erik ten Hag.
And after opening concrete talks over a deal for Hojlund earlier this month, the Red Devils have now submitted their opening offer for the Atalanta forward, though they did not receive the response they were hoping for.
That is according to a report from Corriere dello Sport (via Man Utd News), which details that Man United have failed to convince Atalanta to sell their striker, after making their first bid, which amounts to €35m (£31m).
The Italian club are said to be holding out for a fee of €45m (£39m) plus €12m (£10m) in bonuses, so the two parties are quite far apart for the time being.
United may face competition in their pursuit of the Denmark international, as Juventus also have him on their radar.
How many goals has Rasmus Hojlund scored?
The 20-year-old burst onto the scene last season, scoring six goals in eight games for Sturm Graz, before completing a €17m (£15m) move to Atalanta in August, where he continued his fine form in front of goal, netting ten times in 34 appearances.
Not only has he impressed at club level, but the Dane has enjoyed a fantastic start to his international career, already scoring six goals for his country – including a hat-trick in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Finland back in March.
Atalanta's Rasmus Hojlund
Hailed as an "absolute monster in the making" by football scout Jacek Kulig, the starlet is showing all the signs that he is capable of going right to the very top. However, he should perhaps not be Man United's main striker target this summer.
In order to try and bridge the gap to Manchester City, United need to sign a striker who is already proven at the top level over a number of years and Hojlund is still at the very early stages of his career, so it would be a gamble to put all their eggs in this particular basket.
Chelsea's squad may be starting to look a lot thinner than it did at the start of the summer following a raft of departures early in the transfer window, but the much-needed overhaul could pay off next season.
Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, Edouard Mendy, Kalidou Koulibaly and N'Golo Kante have all departed, while Mason Mount is set to join Manchester United and Ruben Loftus-Cheek is close to signing for AC Milan.
However, Christopher Nkunku has arrived after the worst secret in football was finally confirmed last week, and there is still plenty of time for others to arrive at Stamford Bridge to offset the exits of some key first-team regulars.
If links with the likes of Gabri Veiga, Nicolas Jackson and Moises Caicedo were not enough to get Blues supporters excited again, then rumours suggesting Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe is a target surely will.
Are Chelsea interested in signing PSG forward Kylian Mbappe?
According to reports in Spain, Chelsea have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign Kylian Mbappe, who has informed PSG he will not be extending his contract beyond the end of next season.
Madrid had been widely expected to finally land the France international either this summer or in 12 months' time, but the report suggests Chelsea are serious with their interest.
It is claimed that chairman Todd Boehly, who has shown during his year at the helm that he is not afraid to splash the cash, wants to turn Chelsea into a team of champions and is eager to pair Nkunku with Mbappe up top.
Can Mbappe and Nkunku play alongside each other?
Just how true those rumours are remains to be seen, but the prospect of France international teammates – and former PSG colleagues – Mbappe and Nkunku playing alongside each other for Chelsea is pretty mouthwatering, to say the least.
Mbappe needs little introduction, of course, having emerged as a talent to watch ever since overtaking Thierry Henry as Monaco's youngest goalscorer at 17 years and 62 days in February 2016.
The £117m-rated World Cup winner (as per Football Transfers) has cemented his status as one of the best forwards on the planet across six seasons with PSG, becoming the Parisians' all-time leading scorer in the process, on top of his international success with Les Bleus – and all that is reflected in the stats.
christopher-nkunku-transfer-chelsea
Mbappe is ranked in the top 2% of all forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals per 90 minutes (0.83), as per FBref, while also ranking in the top 18% for assists per 90 (0.21). No wonder Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti described him as "unstoppable" ahead of a Champions League tie earlier this year.
Nkunku, while not quite the global name as Mbappe, scores at an impressive rate of 0.59 non-penalty goals per 90 (top 9%) and assists 0.18 goals per 90 (top 27%).
Interestingly, FBref's player comparison model ranks Nkunku as the third-most similar player to Mbappe in terms of their statistical profiles. For example, they score from a near-identical number of shots (0.18 for Mbappe, 0.19 for Nkunku) and complete a very similar number of passes (80.9% and 80.2%).
There is also a likeness in terms of their ability to win the ball back (0.32 tackles per 90 for Mbappe, 0.28 for Nkunku) and in terms of shot-creating actions per 90 – which factors in passes and take-ons leading to a shot – with Nkunku slightly edging it at 4.65 to Mbappe's 4.57.
Clearly, the pair can cause damage if paired together, as they have been for France and PSG in the past. Not only can they score, assist and create chaos in the final third, but they also complement each other well.
Whereas Mbappe outshines Nkunku in terms of successful take-ons per 90 (2.36 v 1.80), the latter comes out on top for aerial duels won per 90 (0.81 v 0.26).
Identifying Mbappe as a good option to lead the line is the easy part, though. Persuading the superstar forward to join, while also matching PSG's valuation for a player in the final year of his contract, is the hard part. Over to you, Todd.
Leeds United have had a tough few months with a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of the club, however, things are starting to get back on track ahead of their Championship campaign.
The 49ers have completed their full takeover at Elland Road, buying out Andrea Radrizzani and are now working on finalising an appointment of a manager who can lead Leeds out of trouble and back into the Premier League as soon as possible.
Not only that, the American owners intend to reinvest in talent to refresh the squad during their next chapter and ambitious pursuit to establish the West Yorkshire club as a top-flight side that can comfortably compete without falling into the same patterns and repeating their mistakes again.
Indeed, without a manager it is difficult to recruit the right players without knowing the philosophy and style of play that will be implemented over the challenging 46-game campaign next season, however, it hasn't stopped them from being linked with potential targets upon the arrival of football advisor Nick Hammond last week.
One player who has been recently linked with a move to Leeds is West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby, a young and energetic player who could emulate Kalvin Phillips at Elland Road.
Would Molumby be a good fit for Leeds?
It is no secret that a number of players in the Leeds squad are reportedly set for an exit this summer after suffering relegation from the Premier League last month.
Both Tyler Adams and Marc Roca have been strongly linked with moves, whilst loanee Weston McKennie has gone back to Juventus after struggling to make a positive impact during his six-month stint with the Whites.
As a result, there is a real opportunity to strengthen and rebuild with vital financial backing from the owners and a sound recruitment strategy that can identify new additions to make a genuine impact next season and lead the club to better days.
Molumby has thrived under the management of former Leeds assistant coach Carlos Corberan whilst largely being deployed in the defensive midfield role, a position Phillips also thrived in when working with Corberan at Elland Road before getting a huge move to Manchester City last summer.
One standout attribute that the Irishman shares with his treble-winning positional peer is a consistently outstanding pass completion rate, with Phillips tallying up a 92.3% accuracy last season despite limited game time, whilst Molumby came in strong with 86% which was, in fact, the best pass accuracy percentage in the entire West Brom squad of those who had more than one appearance last season, according to WhoScored.
Beyond his passing ability, the 23-year-old – hailed an "insane talent" by journalist Rudi Kinsella – has displayed a number of great attributes with four goals scored, four assists and four big chances created, proving he can be a real attacking threat for opponents from his deep-lying position.
He also averaged one shot on goal, 1.4 tackles and won 3.1 duels per game over 43 Championship appearances, demonstrating further that, like Phillips, he is a real workhorse with the ability to make an impact on both defensive and progressive play.
With that being said, it would be a big coup if Leeds could secure the services of Molumby this summer and if he could make the impact that Phillips had on Leeds in the Championship there is no reason why he couldn't become the second coming of their cult hero.
Manchester United have opened talks with Brighton & Hove Albion over the signing of Moises Caicedo, according to talkSPORT, with Chelsea still reportedly leading the way.
Manchester United transfer news – will they sign Moises Caicedo?
With talks reportedly failing to reach a positive outcome so far with Chelsea to sign Mason Mount, Manchester United have seemingly been forced to turn their attention elsewhere, potentially taking them towards Caicedo.
Of course, the irony is that Chelsea reportedly lead the way in the chase to sign the Brighton midfielder this summer, but it is the Blues who could have welcomed the Red Devils into the race by pricing them out of a move for Mount.
The 21-year-old looks to be valued at around £80m or above by his club, so any deal would come at a hefty price for Erik ten Hag and co, who have reportedly been given a budget of £120m this summer, unless they move players on.
There's still a long summer ahead, however, with plenty of twists to come in the Caicedo saga.
Would Moises Caicedo mirror Declan Rice?
There's not just an argument that Caicedo can provide the same quality as Declan Rice, there's evidence that he is even better than the England international in some departments.
On the ball, the Brighton man distributes far more often than his West Ham United counterpart, making more passes last season, according to FBref.
The difference is that Caicedo is more risk-free in his passing range, opting to recycle the ball more often than progressing it.
Last season, the Manchester United target made less progressive passes than Rice, but was dispossessed fewer times. That said, as per FBref, they are noted as similar players, perhaps an ode to their position on the pitch and starring qualities defensively.
Such traits would suit Ten Hag's side, who aren't in need of a midfielder who can make things happen going forward. After all, they've already got that in the form of Bruno Fernandes.
What they need is a balanced player between Fernandes and Casemiro; a player who is safe on the ball, and quick to recover the ball when without it. Given Caicedo's 248 ball recoveries last season, this is a role that he could play.
Speaking about the quality of the Brighton man, Garth Crooks wrote in his BBC column, via Caught Offside, after the Seagulls defeated Arsenal: “Arsenal wanted to buy Brighton’s Moises Caicedo and after this performance against the Gunners I can see why.
“Following his encounter with Gabriel Martinelli you could see this is a player from the old school and he’s going places.
“They made two bids for the Ecuador international this season and it caused a terrible fuss. Brighton refused the offers and they were sizable.
“The player, naturally upset, took some time to get over the disappointment but to his credit settled his differences with the Seagulls and continued to produce outstanding performances, notwithstanding this extraordinary trouncing of the Gunners on their own turf.”
The 21-year-old was also praised on Twitter, with Football Talent Scout saying back in August: "Moisés Caicedo's market value/asking price will be astronomical next summer. And he'll be worth every penny of it. Machine Man. He's 20 by the way. Twenty years old."
So, although United look set to miss out on the Arsenal bound Rice, Caicedo wouldn't exactly be a disappointing alternative.
Manchester United have held talks with the agent of Juventus forward Dusan Vlahovic regarding a potential move to the Premier League, according to reports.
Is Dusan Vlahovic leaving Juventus?
Vlahovic only arrived at the Allianz Stadium in January 2022 from Fiorentina and he’s been a regular feature of the first-team since joining having been handed 22 Serie A starts by Massimiliano Allegri last season where he missed ten games through injury.
Despite still having another three years to run on his contract, the 23-year-old striker has reportedly decided to leave the Italian outfit during this window in search of a new adventure, and after establishing himself as their best-performing offensive player during the previous term, he isn’t short of a potential suitor having attracted the interest of Erik Ten Hag.
Back in March, Manchester Evening News relayed an update suggesting that the Red Devils would be at the front of the queue to sign the Serbia international should he leave the black and white stripes, and it appears that they have already taken the first step towards completing a deal.
Are Man United signing Vlahovic?
According to Calciomercato (via TEAMtalk), Vlahovic’s agent has been “speaking” to Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea who are all keen to strike a deal ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Juventus have set their asking price at €90m (£77m) and his representatives are currently in the process of trying to “persuade” the trio that he would be worth it.
Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.
Man United will need to sign a new centre-forward this summer as a result of Wout Weghorst returning to Burnley following his unsuccessful loan spell and Vlahovic could be the perfect replacement having been dubbed a “goal machine” by talent scout Jacek Kulig.
The World Cup participant, who is naturally left-footed, posted 12 goal contributions (ten goals and two assists) in 27 Serie A appearances last season, form which saw him receive three man-of-the-match awards, but he also posed a threat even when the ball didn’t hit the back of the net.
Over the course of the campaign, Vlahovic recorded a total of 65 shots which was higher than any other of his fellow teammates, as per FBRef, so he’s constantly looking to find a breakthrough and would bring that prolific edge that Ten Hag has been missing through the middle in recent times, potentially making him the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle and it looks as if a transfer is one to watch.
Arsenal seem to finally be closing in on a new signing, although surprisingly it is not Declan Rice just yet.
What's the latest on Kai Havertz to Arsenal?
The latest comes from journalist David Ornstein, who broke the news earlier today that Mikel Arteta has now all but confirmed a deal to bring Kai Havertz to the Emirates.
Writing on his Twitter, the Athletic reporter said: "Arsenal have reached an agreement in principle with Chelsea to sign forward Kai Havertz. Deal for 24yo Germany international is worth around £65m. Personal terms are already in place, attacker’s medical will follow in due course."
It seems that for all their frugality in sorting out a deal with West Ham United for their captain, the north London outfit were much more forthright when it came to tempting Havertz.
Would Kai Havertz improve Arsenal?
When Havertz first moved to Stamford Bridge, there was excitement at what this tall but technically gifted maestro could bring to Frank Lampard's team.
However, the magical gem has since overseen three different managers, having even remained in place for the return of the aforementioned Blues legend two years after his initial sacking.
Whilst this tumultuous tenure has somewhat limited his growth, many still remember the fine things he did for Bayer Leverkusen that led to such a mouth-watering £75.8m move.
After all, his final year in his homeland saw him record 27 goal contributions in all competitions as a youngster, with Bundesliga legend Matthias Sammer having already suggested he was capable of "world-class" moments.
Having only managed nine goals and one assist as a central striker most recently, he still remains a creative leader that could help Bukayo Saka flourish further.
When compared to other strikers across Europe, the 24-year-old ranks in the top 9% for progressive passes per 90, the top 8% for passes completed per 90 and the top 6% for pass completion rate, via FBref.
bukayo-saka-arsenal
Given that the England international managed 14 goals and 11 assists in the league last campaign, with Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus the two who shared the role as number nine given the latter's injury woes, to replace this with the ever-reliability of Havertz's creativity would surely allow the 21-year-old to explode and propel these figures even further upwards.
His ability to drop deep and dictate the play could allow Saka to make scything runs in behind, in a similar way to how Roberto Firmino used to supplement Mohamed Salah at Liverpool.
This could be the perfect player to bolster Arteta's front line, which has been craving additional quality and competition for the forwards. Such creativity in a striker is such a rare commodity and could prove imperative in their efforts to maintain another title fight next season with their star man, Saka, set to get even better.
