Reja’s return to Naples turns sour

Lazio manager Edy Reja rued his team’s defensive performance after a 4-3 loss to Napoli in the Serie A.Reja’s team led 2-0 and then 3-2, but fell to two late goals from Edison Cavani, who finished with a hat-trick.

The boss said it was hard to swallow defeat after finding the net three times at Napoli.

“You can’t come to Naples, score three goals at the San Paolo and lose the game,” Reja said.

“We prepared for the match well, but when 2-0 up we lacked a bit of determination to kill off the match.”

“It’s a shame as the lads took the right approach, although some things need to be looked at in defence.”

Reja was the opposition coach at the San Paolo for the first time after he helped Napoli reach the top flight.

Lazio president Claudio Lotito was angry about the manner in which his club suffered defeat.

Cristian Brocchi appeared to score but for the ball to be ruled not to have crossed the line entirely while Giuseppe Biava was sent off after fouling Cavani in the penalty area.

Lotito was far from impressed with Napoli and how the game unfolded.

“I am very proud of my team because we are accustomed to getting our results on the pitch and in deserved fashion,” he said.

“There were incidents that penalised us. The penalty speaks for itself while Brocchi’s shot was clearly over the line.”

“If things continue with this logic then we can already predict now who will be in which position. We play fair and don’t seek to win at all costs, unlike others. Fair play is not optional.”

The result saw Lazio remain narrowly out of the spots for the Champions League with seven games remaining.

Is the trio the way forward in football?

They often say that the best things in life come in threes and that’s hard to disagree with when you take a look at some of the most successful footballing trios over the years. While in terms of football, you might be familiar with famous double acts, such as striking partnerships including SAS (Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton) or managerial duos – Brian Clough and Peter Taylor come to mind; but the world of football isn’t short of a trio or two (or three!) either.

The attacking trio has come to force in recent years as managers across Europe have opted to play the 4-3-3 formation. Jose Mourinho was one of the first bosses in the Premier League to use this formation, with Chelsea still playing the trio of Didier Drogba, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka / Salomon Kalou today, although £50 million man Fernando Torres might have something to say about that!

However, the greatest exponents of the attacking trio are the Spanish giants, Barcelona. Whether he’s in a striking two or three, Lionel Messi will strike fear into any defence, and alongside David Villa and Pedro (formerly Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry) Barca have a fearsome attacking line-up. Alongside the front three you of course have the midfield trio too, and you’d be hard pressed to find a better trio of midfielders than Barcelona’s Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets anywhere in the world.

Arsenal’s trio of Robin van Persie, Andrey Arshavin and Theo Walcott can’t be held in the same regard as Messi and co, but this trio of Gunners are still capable of tearing opposition defences apart on their day. The same goes for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, Nani and Javier Hernadez when they play in a three, which Sir Alex Ferguson has used sparsely in recent weeks. However, when the forward three is working in harmony and they are all in form, they are ‘simply unstoppable’…

One trio to keep an eye on are Travis Barker, Tinie Tempah and Katie Taylor. Featuring in the latest Lucozade ad ‘Yes’, the Blink 182 drummer Travis , pop star Tinie and Irish boxer Taylor are a formidable trio. Taylor herself has played football for the Irish women’s national team, so she’s pretty handy with the ball at her feet. Watch the three ‘Ts’ do their stuff in the video below, featuring a rework of ‘Simply Unstoppable’ – something that can be attributed to Messi right now…

AFC Champions League wrap: Sydney out, Suwon on top

Sydney FC’s Asian Champions League campaign came to an end in the group stages on Tuesday with a 3-1 defeat away to the Suwon Bluewings.Goals from Ha Tae-Kyun, Mato Neretljak and Yeom Ki-Hun were the reward for a dominant display from the Korean side at the Suwon World Cup Stadium, with Bruno Cazarine’s consolation strike from Sydney coming against the run of play.

The win sees Suwon join Kashima Antlers on nine points at the top of Group H.

Sydney are four points behind in third with just one match of the group stage remaining.

In Group G, Cerezo Osaka moved second following a 4-0 win away to Arema Malang, with Taka Inui claiming a brace for the visitors.

Jeonbuk Motors remain top of the group after they beat Shandong Luneng Taishan 2-1 away from home.

Lee Dong-Gook’s double proved enough for Jeonbuk to claim all three points and they are now three points clear of Cerezo Osaka, while Shandong are down to third.

Persepolis recorded their first victory of the tournament, beating Group C leaders Al-Ittihad 3-2.

Hamidreza Dehaghi scored twice, with Shpejtim Arifi netting the other for the Iranian side.

Al-Ittihad remain top of the group, with Kuruvchi Tashkent second after beating Al-Wahda 3-2.

A double from Milos Trifunovic and Shavkat Salomov’s late goal were the difference for the Uzbeks, who had to come from behind after Ismail Matar’s fourth-minute opener.

Al Sadd secured top spot in Group B courtesy of a 2-2 draw at home to second-placed Esteghlal.

Qataris Al Sadd needed goals from Khalfan Ibrahim and Hasan Al Haydos to come from back from two down after Farzad Majidi struck twice in the first half for the visitors.

Esteghlal are second, level on points with third placed Al-Nasr.

Zob-Ahan moved on to 13 points at the top of Group D after beating Al-Emirates 1-0 away from home.

Al Shabab moved second after winning 1-0 at home to Al Rayyan, with Naser Al-Shamrani claiming the winner on 76 minutes.

Al-Emirates are now third, two points behind Al Shabab, while Al Rayyan are bottom with just one point from five matches.

Would Arsenal fans really be sad to see him go?

Reports in Tuesday’s Independent have claimed that Zenit St Petersburg would be willing to offer Andrei Arshavin an escape from Arsenal and a return to Russia. It seems most Arsenal fans wouldn’t shed too many tears if the midfielder was to leave this summer, especially to a club that offers no threat domestically or in Europe. Arsene Wenger would probably try and keep the Russian if one of Europe’s elite clubs came in for the player but a return to Zenit could represent a good deal for Arsenal.

The Independent reports that Andrei Arshavin would be welcomed back to the club with open arms and that the Russian could be the first of many to be shown the door at the Emirates following yet another trophy-less season for Arsenal.

Sporting director Igor Korneev told talkSPORT: “Zenit’s doors are always open for Andrei. If his situation at Arsenal does not improve and he’s not comfortable in London, we can study this issue in time for next season.”

To most fans it seems crazy that Arsenal would want to sell a player that offers so much when he is on his game. There have been games where Arshavin has been totally unplayable and although he has been inconsistent this season, in the big games he has shown his true talents. Without a doubt Arsenal need a shake up this summer but surely the Gunners need to get their priorities straight this summer. He was not the reason Arsenal failed this season, although he seems to be a convenient scapegoat for some fans. Can Arsenal really afford to lose what Arshavin brings to the squad?

He has scored six times in thirty three games, but impressively has claimed 12 assists. In any league and in any team that can’t be sniffed at. If you take those assists away from Arsenal this season, would they have challenged at the top for so long? When you consider that Gareth Bale, the PFA Player of the year, has only contributed seven goals with two assists in the Premier League, Andrey’s worth becomes more apparent.

Arshavin is a quality player and if Arsenal spend this summer it seems that they will look to finance deals with his departure. The Russian is too good a player to be warming the Arsenal bench, finding a system that suits Arshavin seems the most logical path to go down. He has been booed a few times this season and that may sway his decision to leave The Emirates. A return to Russia would demonstrate an easy route out for Arshavin, and a talent would be wasted. Arshavin should be playing in one of the top European leagues and competing for top European medals. Arsenal fans may miss him if he does decide to leave.

Liverpool success will depend on them missing out

“The King has returned”- sorry to disappoint, but I’m not referring to Elvis, I’m talking about Kop Hero Kenny Dalglish. The Scot signed a three year deal last week (along with assistant Steve Clark), after months of fans and pundits calling for Kenny’s homecoming to be made permanent, more than 20 years after he vacated the seat. After what can only be described, by Liverpool’s standards, as a disastrous beginning to the Premier League season under Roy Hodgson’s tenure, Dalglish took over in January and turned the Merseyside outfit’s fortunes right around.

It is crucial for a manager to have the admiration and respect of not only the players but the fans too, and that is quite clearly there for all to see. A united dressing room has been the main achievement by the Scot, “The atmosphere surrounding the club has been transformed by his presence,” (Owner John Henry). The lack of team spirit under Hodgson’s tenure was more obvious than the sexual tension between the Sky Sports News presenters, but since King Kenny’s return there is a new sense of optimism and togetherness around Anfield, a key ingredient in any form or success, and one which will no doubt be essential next season if Liverpool are to recapture the glory days.

There are constant rumours circulating that Liverpool will embark on a huge summer spending spree, as the new owners and Dalglish look to make the club their own. With such promising youngsters who, under Kenny’s management, have been given valuable advice and experience, is a spree really needed? In my honest opinion I would argue that a Manchester City style spend is not required but a couple of additions wouldn’t go amiss. is not of a high enough standard to be back up to Martin Skrtel and Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher, and no doubt Dalglish will look to bolster his side with a few squad players; other than that Liverpool definitely have a well balanced and strong squad to be challenging on all domestic fronts next season.

Liverpool’s success next season really depends on them not qualifying for the fifth place booby prize that is the Europa League. Thursday nights in eastern Europe playing obscure teams won’t benefit a team of Liverpool’s standing; a team with such an illustrious European history should be hosting Barcelona, not Slaven Koprivnica. If Liverpool can solely concentrate on the Premier League and regaining their top four status, which, if the current momentum builds is a very likely possibility, then being in the top four will only serve to be a platform for greater things.

Wage system slated for Championship

English Championship clubs are set to agree to a UEFA-style financial fair-play system to curb wage-driven debt. From the 2013/14 season, clubs throughout Europe will be forced to spend only what they earn in revenue in a ‘break-even’ requirement laid out by UEFA.

A similar system governing the Championship will be put forward at the Football League’s AGM in Cyprus on Thursday, and the body’s chairman Greg Clarke said the initial response has been largely positive.

“The Championship clubs voted to look at financial fair play and in principle decided that was the road they wanted to go down,” Clarke said.

“I think it’s essential, and the energy to solve this is coming from the clubs themselves.”

“It’s a perfect storm in that a lot of things have come together to make this happen, including of course the level of debt in the game – 700 million pounds in the Football League, most of that in the Championship – and big losses being racked up by the clubs.”

League One clubs are also expected to adopt a salary cap akin to that which governs League Two, where clubs are permitted to spend a maximum of 60 percent of their turnover on wages.

The news comes as accounting firm Deloitte released their annual report into football finances, revealing that more than one third of Championship clubs are paying more in wages than they are earning.

The report also shows salaries in the Premier League have risen by 64 million pounds to over 1.4 billion, inflating the league’s wages-to-revenue ratio to an all-time high of 68 percent.

Steven Gerrard to miss Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard will sit out his side’s pre-season tour of Asia, as the England international makes an effort to be fit for the start of the 2011/12 season. The 31-year-old has been sidelined with a groin injury since March, undergoing two operations in that time, and will remain in England to work on his fitness.

“I’m sure people will appreciate Steven giving himself the best opportunity to play against Sunderland on the opening day of the new campaign,” manager Kenny Dalglish told the club’s official website.

The Reds leave on Sunday for an eight day trip that includes fixtures in China and Malaysia, and training in Singapore, and Gerrard regrets not having the chance to travel with the squad.

“I’d really been looking to travelling and meeting first hand as many as our fans as possible. I’m really sorry that I won’t now be able to do that,” he stated.

“But after sitting down and talking with our medical experts, it’s been decided that the best course of action is for me to continue my rehabilitation programme at Melwood. It’s disappointing I won’t be with them, but I’m sure the lads who go out there will put a great show on for our fans,” the England man concluded.

The Whiston born player faces a race to be fit in time for the first fixture of the 2011/12 season, which is against The Black Cats on August 13th.

Beckham hopes for All-Star display

LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham believes the MLS All-Stars can spring a surprise when they meet Manchester United. The two sides face off in a friendly in New Jersey on Wednesday, where Beckham will be joined by the likes of Thierry Henry and Landon Donovan in the MLS All-Stars squad.

The match is a repeat of last year’s friendly which Sir Alex Ferguson’s side won 5-2, and although Beckham admits it will be tough to beat his former club, he says an upset is not out of the question.

“I think we have a chance on Wednesday,” Beckham said.

“It will be tough. It’s never easy coming up against Manchester United, no matter where you play in the world.”

Given the prestige of the opposition, Beckham also urged his team-mates to embrace the occasion.

“It’s going to be a difficult game, but it’s going to be a game to enjoy,” he said.

“You don’t get many opportunities to play against the likes of Wayne Rooney and Chicharito (Javier Hernandez) and so many other players that they’ve got.”

“As much as we want to win the game it’s important that we enjoy it.”

Hernandez will feature in Wednesday’s game and wants to improve on a superb debut season at Old Trafford, during which he scored 13 Premier League goals.

“The only thing in my mind now is to work hard every day, keep improving and learning and do my best to help the team,” Hernandez said.

“I am still enjoying my dream, but I just want to keep improving to help my team. If I score goals it’s a consequence of the team’s effort.”

“I’m happy. I’m enjoying it a lot. It’s a dream come true for me. I want to keep improving and do my best to help my team.”

The Anfield club hopeto complete the transfer by the end of the week in preparation for theirPremier League opener against Sunderland at home on August 13.The Spaniard’s contract at Newcastle expires in mid-2012 andlast week he was fined two weeks’ wages for a Twitter rant directed towardsowner Mike Ashley. “The club is allowing all the major players of the teamto go.
