Frank can unearth his own Dembele by unleashing "generational" Spurs gem

Tottenham Hotspur are back in action in the Premier League this weekend as they prepare to welcome London rivals Fulham to North London on Saturday night.

Spurs are looking to bounce back from successive defeats to Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain in their last two games, losing 5-3 to the French giants in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

The Lilywhites have not won in the Premier League since they beat Everton 3-0 at the end of October, with one win in six in all competitions since, which is why it is so important for Thomas Frank’s team to win this weekend.

They will have to get one over Fulham in order to do so, though, and it is a club that they have many connections to through players who have played for both.

Ranking Fulham players who have played for Spurs since 2010

Counting all players who played for Spurs since 2010, there have been ten players who either played for Fulham before or after their time in North London.

Perhaps most notably, given that Dimitar Berbatov left Tottenham in 2008, is central midfielder Mousa Dembele, who played 240 matches for Spurs between 2012 and 2018, after signing directly from the Cottagers.

As you can see in the table above, academy players like Ryan Fredericks and Josh Onomah rank at the bottom, with several less notable Spurs players before the top four.

It is hard to say anyone other than Dembele should be at the top, given that the Belgian star, renowned for his ability on the ball, is the only player on the list to play more than 100 games for the club, with 240, per FBref.

He was once ‘irreplaceable’ for Spurs, as shown in the post above from 2018, and Frank can unearth his own version of the midfielder by playing Lucas Bergvall on Saturday night.

Why Lucas Bergvall could be Tottenham's next Mousa Dembele

One of Dembele’s most notable attributes during his time with Spurs was his dribbling. Speaking about his former international teammate, Youri Tielemans once said: “His dribbling was amazing, you just couldn’t take the ball off him.”

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

He was brilliant at carrying the ball up the pitch from the middle of the park, and Bergvall is a central midfielder who can offer similar qualities for Spurs in the present day.

Per FBref, the Sweden international ranks within the top 9% of his positional peers in the Big 5 Leagues and European competitions over the last 365 days for progressive carries per 90 (2.30) and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.55).

This shows that he is one of the most productive dribblers among central midfielders in Europe, which is why he could develop into being Frank’s own version of Dembele in the middle of the park.

Bergvall, like the Belgian, does not carry a huge goal threat, having scored once in the Premier League this season, but he can get the team up the pitch with his ability to drive forward with the ball at his feet.

The Swedish star, who was dubbed a “generational talent” by the club’s head of scouting Rob Mackenzie, started as part of a box midfield against PSG earlier this week, but playing further up the pitch ahead of Archie Gray and Rodrigo Bentancur restricted how much he could drive from deep.

Therefore, unleashing him in a midfield three against Fulham on Saturday could allow him to provide supporters of both teams with a reminder of a player who once starred for them.

Own Kvaratskhelia: Spurs could see £50m bid accepted for PL "superstar"

Tottenham have been told that they could have an offer accepted for their own Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January.

ByDan Emery Nov 28, 2025

Bergvall only attempted one dribble, which he completed, against PSG, and playing him further back on the pitch to use as a threat in transition could help Spurs to win their first Premier League game of the month this weekend.

Rizwan sacked, Shaheen Afridi named new Pakistan ODI captain

Decision was taken after a meeting between selection committee and white-ball coach Hesson

Danyal Rasool20-Oct-2025Mohammad Rizwan has been sacked as Pakistan ODI captain, with Shaheen Shah Afridi replacing him. The decision was announced by the PCB shortly after the first day of the ongoing Test match between Pakistan and South Africa in Rawalpindi, a Test both Rizwan, 33, and Afridi, 25, are currently playing. No reason was provided for replacing Rizwan; indeed, the wicketkeeper batter was not even mentioned in the official statement. The decision, according to the PCB, was taken after a meeting in Islamabad between the selection committee and the white-ball head coach Mike Hesson.Rizwan’s removal was all but inevitable when the PCB put out a statement over the weekend, pointedly declining to confirm him as ODI captain ahead of the white-ball leg of the South Africa tour. Instead, it said Hesson had asked PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to convene a meeting with the selection and advisory committee to appoint a new captain.ESPNcricinfo understands the desire to replace Rizwan was not specifically at the behest of the head coach, but enjoyed wider backing at the highest level of the PCB’s decision-making process.Afridi’s last foray into white-ball captaincy was an unhappy one, when he was tapped to lead the T20I team ahead of a series against New Zealand in January 2024. Pakistan ended up losing 4-1 before he was replaced in similar circumstances to Rizwan’s sacking right now, with chairman Naqvi pointedly declining to confirm he would continue in the role. Afridi was replaced by Babar Azam a week later. While Pakistan had different captains for all formats – a situation that will continue – Rizwan was until recently perceived to be the most secure of a group that includes Shan Masood and Salman Ali Agha. Since becoming captain of the ODI side last year, Rizwan is four runs short of the highest scorer for Pakistan, averaging just under 42. He led Pakistan to series wins in Australia and South Africa in 2024, though results this year have dipped, most notably with an ignominious first-round exit at a home Champions Trophy.Afridi pulls on the armband in good form in the format; he was Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker last year in ODI cricket, and central to their away wins in South Africa and Australia. Since the start of the 2023 World Cup, no fast bowler from a Full Member nation has more wickets than his 45, which have come at more than two wickets a game.Afridi’s first assignment as ODI captain is the white-ball series against South Africa, which comprises three ODIs in Faisalabad next month.

Tigers Announcer Jason Benetti Gives Call of the Year After Crucial Win vs. Rays

There is some magic happening at Comerica Park, as the Detroit Tigers fight to make the postseason amid a sensational second half of the 2024 MLB season.

The Tigers overcame a 3–0 deficit to stun the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, 4–3, in order to keep a firm grasp on one of the final two AL wild-card spots. Following Thursday's victory, Detroit needs just two more wins in their remaining three games in order to clinch a spot in the postseason.

As Jason Foley closed the door on the Rays with a 98-mph fastball to cap off Thursday's win, commentator Jason Benetti delivered an incredible call of the moment.

"A city that doesn't care about the odds has a baseball team to match," Benetti said.

Chills.

Benetti captured the scenes at Comerica Park perfectly, needing just one sentence to offer a fitting description of this year's Tigers squad.

Detroit was a total postseason afterthought at the start of the year and throughout much of the first half of the season. After a slow start, the team is 37–24 since the All-Star break, having turned their fortunes around massively during their unexpected run.

Now knocking on the door of the postseason, it'll be pandemonium in Detroit if they call clinch a berth.

Jose Mourinho aims parting shot at Newcastle fans after watching Benfica suffer bruising Champions League defeat at 'quiet' St James' Park

Jose Mourinho has aimed a veiled dig at Newcastle over the atmosphere created at St James’ Park during the clash with Benfica, which the Magpies won 3-0. The Geordie faithful pride themselves on the hostile reception they generate for away players and fans, with a raucous atmosphere regularly created in the ground, and they will not take kindly to hearing the Special One’s negative comments.

  • Benfica soundly beaten on Tyneside

Newcastle eased past defeated Benfica courtesy of a standout performance from Anthony Gordon and a second-half brace from substitute Harvey Barnes. The first half saw both teams create chances, including a shot from Benfica's Dodi Lukebakio which hit the woodwork. But Gordon broke the deadlock around the half-hour mark with a close-range finish from a Jacob Murphy cross and, after the interval, Barnes doubled the Geordies' lead by expertly finishing off a remarkable long throw from goalkeeper Nick Pope. Gordon then turned provider, setting up Barnes to score his second goal and secure the win for the Magpies. The victory was Newcastle's second on the bounce in the Champions League, boosting their campaign under manager Eddie Howe.

Award-winning atmosphere at St James’ Park

Located in the heart of the city, St James' Park is renowned for its intense and passionate atmosphere. The cathedral-like stadium design ensures the roar of the vocal supporters echoes throughout, creating an intimidating and electric environment for visiting teams. In 2018 the ground was named as having the best atmosphere in the Premier League by popular football fan website Football Ground Map. For many fans, the matchday pilgrimage and being surrounded by such fervour makes the experience truly unforgettable. Players have noted the uniquely special vibe there, recognising how difficult it makes things for opposing teams. Recent high-stakes games have proven that when the atmosphere is 'turned up', St. James' Park truly becomes one of the toughest places to play.

  • Mourinho takes aim at 'nice' Newcastle

Mourinho said: "In the second half the second goal kills the game and then after that, it was easy for Newcastle to play and easy for the fans to enjoy. But to be honest, the atmosphere was just nice, not difficult and beautiful in the sense of fair play, no problems, good referee, no disciplinary problems. In that sense I think it was a quiet St James'."
He added: "This tells me about the level of Newcastle. While the score was open, and I think it was even unfairly open, because in the first half the team played well on the pitch, the players felt comfortable in a stadium with a palpable atmosphere. The danger they posed for us was obviously from set pieces and everything indirect in the box, because it's difficult to compete with a team with this physicality, but we had great chances to score, three or four. Before they scored, we had a beautiful shot from Lukebakio that hit the post, so I reiterate that the first-half result doesn't reflect the game at all.
"There's a team with a higher horsepower engine than the other, a team with much more intensity, a team with much more speed. As I said, I think in the press conference—if not in the press conference, it was on TV—they have four lightning-fast wingers. They don't have one or two, they have four. And when you change two who come on in the 50th or 60th minute, when you change one and then later change another, we, losing the compact play we had in the first half, were exposed."

Time for Toon to turn up the volume

VIDEO: Cristiano Ronaldo smashes home screamer for Al-Nassr just minutes after missing penalty

Al-Nassr made light work of Al-Fateh on home turf on Saturday night as they eased to a 5-1 win. Victory saw Al-Nassr extend their lead at the top of the Saudi Pro League to four points as they extended their winning start to the season to five matches. It was a match of mixed emotions for Cristiano Ronaldo, however, who experienced an extreme high and low in a matter of moments in the second half.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Felix inspires Al-Nassr to victory

Al-Nassr took the lead in the 13th-minute through Joao Felix, but Al-Fateh drew level in the 54th minute through Sofiane Bendebka. However, Bendebka's equaliser seemed to spur the Saudi Pro League leaders into action.

Ronaldo restored Al-Nassr's lead on the hour mark before Felix added his second and their third eight minutes later. Kingsley Coman bagged the fourth for Jorge Jesus' men before Felix completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute in a dominant home display.

And Ronaldo's strike on the night was one to savour as the Portugal skipper bagged an absolute beauty with an hour on the clock.

Ronaldo received the ball on the left before cutting inside onto his wand of a right foot. Despite pressure from the Al-Fateh full-back, Ronaldo launched an unstoppable effort into the far corner, leaving goalkeeper Amin Al Bukhari clutching at thin air.

  • Mixed emotions for Ronaldo

The evening could have been so much different for Ronaldo and Al-Nassr, however. Just a minute before unleashing his incredible effort, the Portuguese star saw a 59th minute penalty saved by Al Bukhari.

Al-Fateh must have been buoyed by Ronaldo's penalty miss but their hopes were rapidly dashed by the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star.

  • Al-Nassr looking to maintain form

Al-Nassr, who added Inigo Martinez, Felix and Coman to the ranks over the summer, will look to maintain their 100% start to the domestic campaign when they face Al Hazem next weekend. Ronaldo, meanwhile, will hope to continue his solid start to the season having scored five league goals.

Felix, meanwhile, now leads the scoring charts after his hat-trick on Saturday night. The Portuguese forward has hit the ground running in Saudi Arabia after a disappointing 12 months that saw him struggle for form at Chelsea and AC Milan.

Al-Fateh have now collected just one point from their opening matches, and sit 16th in the Saudi Pro League after they were dismantled by Al-Nassr. They'll hope to claim a first league win of the season when they take on Al-Ettifaq next weekend.

Anderson 2.0: Newcastle may rue selling one of the league's best for £3.5m

Newcastle’s summer spending has shown intent.

The additions of Nico Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey, Malick Thiaw, Anthony Elanga, and Aaron Ramsdale all signify ambition and squad strengthening.

Yet, balancing PSR compliance with retaining homegrown or academy-developed talent still remains a challenge.

Unlike the early days of the PIF takeover, when huge sums were spent without the need to sell players, Newcastle must now closely adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

Players who might have stayed for development or depth are sold for compliance, while in the Ashley era, sales were primarily profit-driven.

These different approaches mean that Newcastle have let some talented players slip through the net – some of whom have gone on to flourish elsewhere.

This tension between compliance and talent retention was evident with Elliot Anderson, and it’s echoed in the story of another Premier League star.

Both illustrate how Newcastle’s policies can inadvertently push talent towards rival clubs, where they thrive in ways they may not have done at St James’ Park.

One of their own: Elliot Anderson

Anderson’s exit to Nottingham Forest in 2024 was emblematic of Newcastle’s new realities.

The 22-year-old local talent came through the club’s junior ranks and had been earmarked as one for the future.

Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson.

His transfer, which saw goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos move in the opposite direction, was less about choice and more about balancing the books.

Jankuba Minteh was also reluctantly sold to Brighton, and in a mad dash to comply with regulations, potential moves for Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak were even considered.

Despite the circumstances, Anderson has thrived at Nottingham Forest.

At Forest, he made 37 league appearances last season, contributing two goals and six assists.

According to FBref, his statistical impact is impressive.

He ranked in the 88th percentile for assists per 90 (0.19), 77th for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.07), 89th for successful take-ons per 90 (1.18), 88th for tackles per 90 (3.07), and 87th for clearances per 90 (2.40).

Anderson’s performances were rewarded with his first England call-up, having previously represented Scotland at youth level, and he impressed in midfield against both Andorra and Serbia.

Newcastle may well regret the decision, not because the transfer was financially impractical, but because Anderson’s trajectory shows the club missed out on a homegrown talent that flourished once given first-team opportunities elsewhere.

That said, there’s another cautionary tale elsewhere.

Another cautionary tale for Newcastle

Matz Sels offers another example of Newcastle’s talent management challenges.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper joined Newcastle from Gent in 2016 but only made 14 appearances, sitting behind Karl Darlow in the pecking order.

Matz Sels

A loan to Anderlecht followed, before a permanent departure to Strasbourg in 2018.

After years abroad, Sels returned to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest in 2024, in a deal worth approximately £5m.

There, he became one of the standout goalkeepers in England.

Playing every minute of Forest’s 38 Premier League matches, he helped the club secure European qualification.

Sels’ consistency was rewarded with the Premier League Golden Glove – shared with Arsenal’s David Raya – after 13 clean sheets.

He also earned Forest’s Player of the Month award in February and was instrumental in a defensively resolute back four alongside Neco Williams, Nikola Milenković, Murillo, and Ola Aina.

As journalist Louis Wheeldon put it, Sels was the “best in the league” last season – a remarkable turnaround for a goalkeeper once considered peripheral at St James’ Park.

Statistically, Sels’ 2024/25 season was exceptional.

He ranked in the 78th percentile compared to his peers for save percentage (74.6%) and 67th percentile for clean sheet percentage (31.6%).

While traditionally a more classic, less ball-playing keeper, Sels’ shot-stopping and command of his area proved crucial in Forest’s defensive resilience.

Sels’ story, alongside Anderson’s, illustrates how Newcastle’s prior focus on sales for non-footballing reasons has allowed talent to slip through the net.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

While PSR regulations now necessitate tough choices, these examples serve as a reminder that careful talent management is crucial.

Players like Anderson and Sels, who might have been peripheral at St James’ Park, have flourished when trusted with regular first-team football.

Anderson’s midfield dynamism and Sels’ goalkeeping excellence are now key to Forest’s resurgence, emphasising that talent retention should not only be measured in financial terms but also in footballing impact.

As Newcastle continues to invest in a youthful, high-potential squad, the club must navigate the fine line between compliance and opportunity.

The lesson for Newcastle is clear: fostering talent within the club may offer rewards that outstrip immediate financial gain.

Failing to do so could mean more players slipping through the net and flourishing elsewhere.

Ousmane Dembele reveals Lionel Messi message 'really struck' PSG star as former team-mates and coach reach out to congratulate Ballon d'Or winner

Ousmane Dembele revealed that Lionel Messi's 'direct message' after Ballon d'Or win 'really struck' him as the Frenchman claimed that his former Barcelona colleagues and coach congratulated him. Dembele beat Blaugrana sensation Lamine Yamal to win the Golden Ball earlier this week after starring for PSG in the 2024-25 campaign, where the French giants won the treble.

  • Dembele and PSG's historic 2024-25 campaign

The 2024-25 campaign proved to be the most memorable season in the club's history as Paris Saint-Germain won the Champions League for the first time and also bagged the treble. They also won the UEFA Super Cup last month, beating Tottenham in penalties, while their only disappointment came in the Club World Cup final, where they went down against Chelsea. Dembele played a key role in Luis Enrique's side's success as he contributed with 35 goals and 16 assists in 53 matches across all competitions. For an excellent campaign with the French giants, Dembele was rightfully awarded the Ballon d'Or.

    Messi's message 'really struck' Dembele

Speaking to France Football, Dembele revealed that he got a direct message from ex-Barcelona team-mate Messi, as he said: "A message that particularly struck me? It was Lionel Messi. He sent me a direct message. There was Xavi Hernandez (his former coach at FC Barcelona). A lot of (former Barça players). Luis Suarez… they were happy. Those from PSG? I had them by message. Achraf (Hakimi), the coach, Luis Campos, all that."

  • Messi shared a congratulatory message on social media

The Inter Miami star also shared a heartfelt social media post for Dembele after his triumph in Paris, as the Argentine wrote on Instagram: "Grande Ous !!! Congratulations, I’m so happy for you. You deserve it."

Dembele was a clear winner in Ballon d'Or race

Before the ceremony on Monday, many believed that the race for the Golden Ball would be a close contest between Dembele and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, who played a key role in the club winning three domestic titles but when the voting results came out, it was revealed that Dembele finished more than 300 points clear of Yamal.

New Giakoumakis: Celtic in talks for £8m star who can "become world-class"

Celtic are set to be extremely busy in the closing hours of the transfer market.

After failing to qualify for the Champions League this week, dumped out by Kairat on penalties in the play-off round, Brendan Rodgers is demanding signings ahead of a Europa League campaign.

Well, he has so far got his wish, with winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha arriving from Royal Antwerp for £5m, while left-back Marcelo Saracchi has also joined on a season-long loan from Boca Juniors, with a £2m option to buy.

However, Celtic supporters’ main focus remains the striker situation, so could the Celts land their number one target, a forward reminiscent of Giorgos Giakoumakis?

Celtic's search for a striker

Somewhat out of nowhere, as reported by various sources, Swansea City have agreed to sign Adam Idah for £7m.

The Republic of Ireland international only joined Celtic permanently for £9.5m last summer, but has yet to nail down a regular starting spot, hooked at half time of the miserable Champions League first leg against Kairat at Parkhead.

Idah successfully completed a medical in South Wales on Friday, but will only be allowed to leave if the Hoops secure a replacement.

So, as reported by the Herald, Celtic’s first-choice target to be just that is Kasper Dolberg.

The Hoops’ opening bid has been rejected, with Anderlecht valuing the Danish international at around £8m, with the Celts ‘yet to match’ this valuation, after initial talks.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Belgian club are, somewhat, under pressure to sell, having crashed out of the Conference League on Thursday, beaten 2-0 by AEK Athens, but are ‘reluctant’ to lose their star attacker, so will Celtic make an offer that satisfies the record-34-times Belgian champions?

What Kasper Dolberg would bring to Celtic

Still only 27 years old, it feels like Dolberg – who Peter Bosz once claimed can “become absolute world-class” – has been around forever.

The Dane first burst onto the scene at Ajax, scoring an impressive 45 goals in 119 appearances for the Amsterdam-based giants, a key figure in the side that reached the Europa League Final in 2017 and the Champions League semi-finals two years later.

This form earned him a big-money move to Nice in the summer of 2019 but, despite scoring 11 Ligue 1 goals during his first season in the French Riviera, he did not live up to expectations.

He was shipped out on loan to Sevilla and then Hoffenheim, scoring no goals for los Nervionenses and just two in the colours of die Kraichgauer, but has really rediscovered his best form since moving to Anderlecht two summers ago.

In 95 appearances for the Purple and Whites, Dolberg has accumulated 44 goals, only two players bettered his tally of 18 in last season’s Jupiler Pro League, scoring five goals already this season, on target against Häcken, Sheriff Tiraspol and AEK Athens in UEFA qualifiers.

His form in Brussels has also seen Dolberg work his way back into the international picture, likely to be leading the line for Denmark against Scotland in a World Cup qualifier next Friday night.

So which Celtic striker from the not-too-distant past would Dolberg be reminiscent of?

Well, like the Dane, Giakoumakis joined Celtic in his mid-20s, having bounced around various European clubs, as the table below documents.

As the table notes, Dolberg in the present day has achieved far more in his career than Giakoumakis had when he was signed by Ange Postecoglou in August 2021.

Giakoumakis

Well, the Greek international made quite the impact at Parkhead, scoring 26 times in Hoops, averaging a goal every 97 minutes, picking up the Premiership golden boot during his sole full-season in Glasgow.

Thus, if Dolberg could replicate anything like that, he would be a roaring success, surely representing a major upgrade on the outgoing Idah.
