FSG can fund Semenyo by selling Liverpool dud who left Carragher "baffled"

For much of the summer, it was all about Alexander Isak at Liverpool. Then, as the deadline approached, the next saga ramped up regarding Marc Guehi.

The England centre-back, having agonisingly missed out on a last-gasp Anfield switch, might still get his wish in 2026, although attention has shifted to yet another high-profile Premier League target of late.

With Mohamed Salah’s much-debated outburst having thrown his Liverpool future into doubt, the suggestion is that Arne Slot and co could turn to Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo in the New Year, with there an argument that the Ghanaian is needed even if the Egyptian genius doesn’t depart next month.

The word on the street is that Semenyo – who has a £65m release clause – has decided that he wants to make the move to Merseyside, be it in January or next summer.

Regardless of if or when the 25-year-old does arrive, such a deal appears a necessity, with every senior winger under threat right now back at Anfield.

Why Semenyo is now the 'best winger in the country'

It wasn’t too long ago that Liverpool’s wide men looked to be the envy of everyone, with Slot overseeing arguably Salah’s best season last time out, after the 33-year-old racked up 57 goals and assists across all competitions.

The nailed-on starter on the right flank, the Dutchman also conjured up consistency from both Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz off the left – albeit while operating centrally too – with the pair scoring 18 and 17 goals apiece in all, respectively.

With Diaz allowed to depart for Bayern Munich, and Salah having fallen from favour, however, the flanks have become a real problem in 2025/26, with Semenyo now taking on the mantle as arguably the “best winger in the country”, in the view of ex-England international, Chris Waddle.

That status is certainly justified considering that the ex-Bristol City man is currently the joint third-highest scorer in the top-flight right now, beaten by only two players, both out-and-out strikers, in the form of Igor Thiago (11) and Erling Haaland (17).

When throwing assists into the mix too, the Cherries star also ranks fourth for total goal involvements, again only edged out by Thiago, Haaland and Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes.

Lethal from either flank and on either foot, having scored four with his right and three with his left this season, as per Sofascore, the £65m man looks like the complete package, thus representing a real upgrade on Slot’s current options.

Liverpool star could be the casualty of Semenyo's signing

Following an almost £450m spend in the summer, albeit after a muted 2024, it remains to be seen whether the Reds will be able to invest significantly heading into 2026, not least with other areas of the pitch also in need of reinforcement.

Of course, funds could be made available if Salah were to depart, although those days of a potential £200m bid arriving appear to be long gone, amid suggestions the ageing star could even wish to see his contract terminated by mutual agreement.

With £13m signing Federico Chiesa also unlikely to fetch a significant sum, having started just one league game for the club to date, it might be Gakpo whom FSG opt to cash in on, should it come to that.

Now, as already stated, the Netherlands international was central to last season’s title charge, although his tally of 15 goals and assists in the league was actually still bettered by Semenyo, who chalked up 16.

Equally, while the latter man has kicked on with seven goals and four assists in 2025/26, Gakpo – now hampered by injury – appears to have regressed somewhat, registering just four goals and three assists.

With just one goal and one assist in his last seven league games, the 26-year-old is yet to prove he can truly hit those real heights at Premier League level, with last season the only time he has reached double figures for league goals since joining back in January 2023.

Even from the start, there has been concern over his lack of blistering pace and physicality, with club legend Jamie Carragher left “baffled” by what he viewed as “not a typical Klopp signing”.

Such fears have been somewhat eased since then, although there is the sense that Semenyo would fit the Liverpool mould more suitably, considering his blistering pace both in and out of possession.

Despite Gakpo having recently signed a new deal at Anfield, there were claims made over the summer that FSG would consider a sale if a suitable offer were to arrive, amid interest from Bayern.

Perhaps, should such interest be revived again in the new year, the Reds might this time decide to cash in on the £61m-rated dud, thus helping Slot to transition toward an even more exciting style, spearheaded by the electric Semenyo.

Dream Guehi alternative: Liverpool "in the market" to sign £50m "beast"

Liverpool are desperate to strengthen their flagging backline in the January transfer market.

Meireles move is more than just a panic buy?

As the price for Luka Modric continued to rise to almost extortionate amounts, the likelihood that Chelsea were going to look for a cheaper alternative increased in the closing days of the transfer window although few would have predicted that man being Liverpool’s Raul Meireles, joining Chelsea with only minutes left on the deadline day clock.

Despite enjoying an impressive first season for the Reds (in which he was a regular fixture, making 44 appearances) Meireles had oddly looked more like a substitute option for Kenny Daglish, new signings pushing him down the pecking order. There had been talk of the potential move in the lead up to deadline day, with a reported cash plus player deal initially rejected by the Reds. But Chelsea’s apparent desperation for midfield cover and a reported late transfer request from the player himself to push through the deal saw the Portuguese international move to Stamford Bridge in what was the one of the latest and most shocking moves on deadline day. But did Chelsea make the right choice in going for Meireles?

The apparent desperation of the deal (something that most late deals can be labeled as the transfer window draws to a close) does initially make you question what role Meireles will play in the team. He joined for £12 million, a reasonable fee based on his performances and a lot cheaper than any potential Modric deal but the midfielder will still need to perform in a Chelsea shirt to justify Andre Villas-Boas’ very late move in the transfer market. The obvious need for creativity in the centre of the park meant that Chelsea spent a lot of the summer chasing Modric and if Chelsea had managed to agree a deal with Tottenham, would Meireles have still been making the move to London?

But it seems very unfair to label Meireles, last season’s PFA Fans’ player of the year, as second choice. He enjoyed a very successful debut season at Liverpool, scoring five goals in six games during a productive month in early 2011 including finding the winner for Liverpool against Chelsea. During that period especially the 28-year-old showed how useful an acquisition he could be for any Premier League team, managing to score and assist goals when given the freedom to roam forward. He may not be as much of a direct creative force as Luka Modric (despite Meireles bettering Modric’s record of three goals and three assists last season) but he will offer versatility and should fit well into Villas-Boas’ 4-3-3 formation.

[ad_pod id=’vip-2′ align=’centre’]

But the success of the move for Meireles and Chelsea will depend on whether he can actually break into the Chelsea manager’s first team plans. The pair spent a very brief spell together at Porto before Meireles left for England so the Chelsea boss will have a good understanding of the player he has just acquired. But Meireles may have trouble displacing the likes of Frank Lampard, Ramires and John Mikel Obi, all of whom have potentially specific roles within the new manager’s midfield set-up. Meireles decision to move and Chelsea’s willingness to pay £12 million very late on for him will look like a terrible waste of Sky Sports News’ deadline day headlines if his Chelsea career goes the same way as another former Liverpool player to make the same move, Yossi Benayoun.

If Chelsea fans see the best of Meireles then he will look like a bargain compared to the hefty fees Chelsea were nearly prepared to pay for Modric but Meireles will have to be given enough of an opportunity at Chelsea to prove he is more than just a second choice panic buy.

Why it is crucial for Chelsea to move on

In recent weeks, Chelsea’s on field exploits have seemingly flown under the radar as the hype surrounding a potential Manchester title race has built following City and United’s impressive unbeaten starts.

Instead, all talk surrounding the London club has been regarding the clubs future at Stamford Bridge.  The issue has arisen following an open letter from Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck to the Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), with the club looking to buy out shareholders as the club considers moving stadium.

CPO was set up in 1993 as the club was in a dire financial position, with the remit of safeguarding Stamford Bridge from potential property development and thus ensuring the club would remain at SW6.

In essence, since Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003 the very job of the CPO has been obsolete. Chelsea’s financial position is now secure and the CPO is an unnecessary obstacle as the club look at options to move away from their spiritual home. Chelsea have already stated that any potential move will be within a 3 mile radius of Stamford Bridge and that any location will have to provide room for a stadium of more than 55,000 seats.

The benefits of moving to a bigger stadium are enormous, take Arsenal for example – a club whose match day revenues have doubled since moving from Highbury to the Emirates in 2006. Some might argue that has led the North London club to stall on the pitch due to a more conservative, youth based transfer policy. Yet for Chelsea, with Abramovich’s millions, such problems would be unlikely.

A 55,000 plus seater stadium would truly announce Chelsea as one of Europe’s long term big players. Indeed, in the same way that influx of foreign players into the Chelsea side of the 90s marked one era and Abramovich’s spending spree marked another – a move to a new stadium would begin a new era in which the club could continue to grow and new memories could be created.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’left’]

Club captain John Terry has already supported any potential move and while he accepts Stamford Bridge will never be forgotten he has stated that he is excited by the idea of kids ‘being able to grow up watching the team play in a big stadium’.

To some fans, the 3 mile radius will be too far but surely for any fan the best interests of the football club must come first. The club have already moved to consider the sensitive issue of club legend Peter Osgood’s ashes – which are buried under the penalty spot at the Shed End of the ground. A club statement read, ‘Peter’s widow Lynn would of course be consulted over this matter and the club has not agreed to move but if it did it would consider transferring the urn and a small part of the old stadium pitch to the new one as a commemoration.’

The ideal situation for the club is that the CPO will accept their proposal and the club will be able to fully explore all avenues open to them. It is clear that the club have been unable to procure a concrete stadium site as of yet but if they can regain the CPO shares it is a start.

The future can only be bright for the club if they move stadium in the next few years; even it will be difficult for fans to accept at first.  Chelsea are currently one of the biggest clubs in Europe, yet if they are to take that next step sentiment must be swept aside.

Manchester United v Sunderland – Match Preview

Sir Alex Ferguson will celebrate 25-years as manager of Manchester United this weekend and his players will be desperate to mark the occasion with a win against Sunderland at Old Trafford.

Since taking over in November 1986 the Scot hasn’t looked back overseeing the clubs most successful period building title winning teams over and again bringing through some of the best footballers the world has ever seen. He is quite simply the greatest manager in British football history but in true Ferguson style he will downplay the occasion and get on with his job and his passion – winning football matches. He’ll certainly be expecting his side to emerge victorious from their tussle with the Black Cats after toiling to a hard fought 1-0 win over Everton last week. It was the perfect response to their derby day humiliation at the hands of neighbours City a fortnight ago – which called for the famous hairdryer treatment. They followed up the victory on Merseyside with a hard fought Champions League win over Romanian minnows Otelul Galati with Wayne Rooney being deployed in an unfamiliar central midfield role. Creativity in the engine room has been a concern for Ferguson this season with his summer pursuit of Wesley Sneijder proving fruitless leaving the midfield without a natural playmaker. Whether Rooney is asked to perform the same role on Saturday remains to be seen. Injury to Tom Cleverley and Ashley Young have further weakened the creative side of the midfield and they’ll both miss the visit of Sunderland.

It’s rather poignant that one of Ferguson’s former players is the manager he will be battling against this week. Former Red Devil’s captain and current Black Cats boss Steve Bruce led United to their first league title back in 1993 and is now trying to emulate his old mentor in the dugout. His side have endured a painful start to the season losing at home to local rivals Newcastle and winning only one of their opening eight games. However their win over Bolton a fortnight ago and last week’s draw with Aston Villa have lifted spirits on Wearside. Bruce was the subject of much derision from his own fans last month but a battling display that saw them peg Villa back twice has alleviated the pressure on his shoulders. The burgeoning partnership of teenager Connor Wickham and on-loan Nicklas Bendtner looks like it could develop into a deadly one with the former scoring his first goal for the club last week. Both will be tasked with physically imposing themselves on a United back line that has looked far from solid in the last few weeks and ending a run of one win in 20 top flight meetings. Sunderland haven’t beaten Ferguson’s side since 2-1 victory at Roker Park in 1997 and they’ve failed to taste victory at Old Trafford since 1968. Bruce himself has yet to get the upper hand on his old boss and will be hoping to spoil is celebrations and finally get the upper hand on him at the 18th attempt.

Key Players

Wayne Rooney – Goals have flowed for Rooney this season with his partnerships with Danny Wellbeck and Javier Hernandez showing he can adapt his game to play with either. Could be asked to drop back into midfield again and use his vision and playmaking abilities to take down Sunderland and give his boss the perfect silver anniversary present.

Stephane Sessegnon – Scored for the second consecutive game last week after heading home a late equaliser to seal a point against Villa. The Frenchman has grown slowly into his role at the Stadium of Light and is now looking every inch the skilful playmaker Bruce say during his time at PSG.

Prediction: 3-1

Wayne Rooney made the Ballon D’Or shortlist this week and remains top of the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index. Rooney covered more ground than any other player in the match against his old club, recording 12,592 metres during the game Rooney also hit the fastest top speed for a United player in that game with 25.72 mph Sebastian Larsson provided the assist for Stephane Sessegnon’s late equaliser and was a constant danger for the Black Cats. Larsson is now ranked 12th in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index having scored three goals and provided four assists Sessegnon’s second goal in as many games made him one of the fastest movers in the Index up to 92nd

Time this Football obsession came to an end?

Being top at Christmas, does it mean anything? Is it a genuine sign of future champions, of half a job done, or is it merely a commonly talked about irrelevancy to which we should pay no heed? Yes, it has mathematical relevance, but we all know how quickly form can change in football and what’s a few points difference when there are still nineteen games to be played? The problem with having so much media hype surrounding football is that we are lead to believe at every stage of the season that the race is decided.

When Arsenal started badly at the beginning of the season there were people suggesting that they might be relegated, now they’re fifth. When Manchester United beat Arsenal 8-2 they were going to win the league. Then until recently the press were saying that there was no hope of catching Manchester City, now they’re on the same amount of points as United. The problem is that companies like Sky need to make every match seem as important as possible and although it may seem unbearably painful when your team draws 1-1 at Wolves on a Tuesday evening, ultimately the season is too long and complex to be predicted before March at the earliest. Even then you never know what might happen.

There are plenty of examples of leads being overturned and there are even examples of huge and seemingly unassailable leads being overturned. Just look At Arsene Wenger’s first premier League title; at the beginning of March Arsenal were eleven points behind Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United. Nobody predicted that Arsenal could possibly overcome such odds but they did. Or you could look at Liverpool’s 1981-82 campaign. At Christmas they were tenth and they went on to win the title. Subsequently how can any of us count out any of the top six who, although it might be a big ask, all have the players capable of winning the title should they go on an excellent run of form.

Form is another important factor as well. Some teams tend to perform better in the second half of the season than the first, or vice versa. Take Man Utd for example. They always seem to labour thought the first half of the season picking up draws and 1-0 wins. Then after Christmas they turn it on and push for the finish line. In contrast you have Arsenal who, over the past five years, have started very well only to apparently forget how to play football towards the end of the season.

We all know and love football, and we all know that know that anything can happen in game, no matter how much a team might be winning by the result is never certain (just look at Liverpool in the Champions League final, or the 4-4 between Arsenal and Newcastle last year). We should view individual games as a metaphor for the league. Nothing is ever certain and the only predictable quality of our league is its unpredictability. I’m not saying that anyone can win the league, that would be stupid, but what I am saying is that the constant predictions about champions and relegation are tiresome. There is no way that anyone can be certain of anything. If there was then you wouldn’t see bookies taking bets. Our obsession with who is top at Christmas or New Year is meaningless. Players can get injured, sold, bought or lose form. Managers can be sacked, managers can be hired and no matter what position a team is in come Christmas, there is always the potential to change that circumstance, perhaps it’s time we realised that.

Wenger weighing up a £14m double raid in January

Arsenal are planning a double raid in January for two players whos contracts currently come to an end next summer and will look to make a two bids worth a combined £14m.

First on Arsene Wenger’s list is that of Bolton Wanderers centre-back Gary Cahill for whom the side were reported to have had a bid rejected in the last few days of the summer’s transfer window. With it unlikely that Bolton will extend the 25 year old’s current deal, and with Cahill himself suggesting he wants to get involved in European competition, Arsenal will remain one of his top destinations.

Arsenal will face competition for the England defender though. Most notable competitors for his signature are those of Tottenham Hotspur – who were rumoured to be close to a deal this summer – and Chelsea, who feel the defender could be a long term solution to the aging John Terry.

Arsenal’s second target is that of 26 year old Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo. The Italian’s current deal also ends next summer although the Serie A side still remain hopeful that a new extension to the his contract could go ahead before January. Should it not, the side will look to sell for obvious reasons, mainly the risk of allowing him to sign a pre-deal in January and risk losing the talented player for nothing.

Whilst it is still early days in the season, Arsenal already have certain players marked for attention and with Cahill and Montolivo pencilled in for a possible January acquisition, Wenger will be hoping any new players in January will be enough to push them on for the second half of the season.

Chelsea and Tottenham to fight for £10m winger

Tottenham and Chelsea are ready to enter the race to sign Juventus winger Milos Krasic according to The Sun.

The Serbia international attacking midfielder has found first-team opportunities in Turin limited this season under Antonio Conte, and is very likely to leave the Italian giants in the summer.

It is believed that Fenerbahce have started a battle for the eastern European player’s signature by bidding £10 million for him, with the Premier League dup now being sparked into action.

Krasic revealed that Tottenham made an offer to Juventus to take him on loan in January, but that he decided to stay in Italy to try and fight for a place in the team.

However, with little-to-no opportunities to play, Krasic is set to leave, with the London rivals both keen to add him to their squads.

John Terry eyeing a return

Chelsea skipper John Terry has stated that he hopes to be back in action in a month, after undergoing an operation on his troublesome knee.

The England defender, who was recently stripped of the nation’s captaincy due to the ongoing race scandal, has been missing in action for Andre Villas Boas’ men for  heir last Premier League and Champions League games, due to colliding with a goalpost against Portsmouth in January.

The veteran centre half has revealed that the operation, which took place last week, was a success, and that he should be back in four to six weeks.

“The operation went well and I’m feeling really good,” he told The Sun.

“The surgeon has shaved off a bit of bone in my right knee that was rubbing and causing a lot of swelling.

“We’re all confident the operation has solved the problem and it is looking good for a quick return.

“The medical staff say four to six weeks before I can play again. But, hopefully, it might be sooner.

“I’ll definitely be back before the end of the season to help the team in the Premier League run-in and for the Euros,” he confirmed.

West Brom v Liverpool – Match Preview

Liverpool will be eager to get one over on former boss Roy Hodgson as they travel to the Midlands to face West Brom desperate to avenge the 2-1 defeat suffered at the Hawthorns in April.

Hodgson endured a nightmare six months at Anfield after replacing Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2010 before being shoved out by new owner John W. Henry in favour of Reds god Kenny Dalglish. His time at the Hawthorns hasn’t been as eventful as his spell on Merseyside although despite providing the inspiration and experience in helping them pull away from relegation the current campaign has been disappointing. A disappointing start saw fears creep in about another relegation battle but two consecutive wins have raised the levels of optimism in supporters minds. Beating Midlands rivals Aston Villa in their own backyard certainly allayed fans fears of another flirtation with the dreaded drop as they stretched their unbeaten run to four games. If they beat Liverpool on Saturday it will be their longest winning run in the top flight since 2002 when Gary Megson guided them to three victories on the trot. They’ll have to do it without Shane Long who was ruled out for six weeks after suffering an ankle injury last week. With only three goals going in at the Hawthorns this season the onus on Peter Odemwingie and the likes of Chris Brunt and James Morrison to find the back of the net in what will be their 100th Premier League game at home. Their record against Liverpool isn’t the best and Hodgson will need to provide some telling words to inspire his team to victory.

Dalglish’s men have an admirable record at the Hawthorns having remained unbeaten in 12 of the last 13 meetings against the Baggies until April’s defeat. Their mid-week Carling Cup victory over Stoke will have sapped energy levels but don’t expect the Reds to slack off as they continue their hunt for a top four place. Luis Suarez’s goal took him to seven for the season and his tenacious approach up front will surely give the West Brom defenders nightmares prior to the game. His partnership with record signing Andy Carroll is slowly starting to blossom and if the pair strike the right chord on Saturday then the home side could be in for a world of hurt. Dalglish has worked hard to get the Geordie striker up to speed following a slow start to his Anfield career but recent performances seem to indicate he is getting back to his bulldozing best. The return of Steven Gerrard has also provided a boost with the captain looking fitter and more motivated than he has done in the last 18 months. A win this week is imperative for Merseyside’s though after drawing the last two at home to Manchester United and Norwich.

Key Players

Chris Brunt – Albion skipper Brunt has finally started to show the form that made him one of the most feared left footed wingers in the Premier League. A loss of form coupled with injury had seen the Northern Ireland international man’s performances drop but he now looks back to his best but will be off penalty duty after his embarrassing miss at Villa last week.

Luis Suarez – Seven goals already this season with more certain to come. The Uruguayan has been a revelation since signing from Ajax with Liverpool’s system designed to get the best out of him. It’s certainly worked as Suarez has terrorised defences all season with his pace and determined approach up front.

Prediction: 1-3

West Brom covered 110.005km in that game, with goal scorer Paul Scharner covering the most ground in that game with 11.104km Jonas Olsson scored his first Barclays Premier League goal of the season against Villa, but the  Swedish defender has been using his power in the air for more defensive duties so far this season, having made more clearances than any other player (25) Luis Suarez saw the post and an inspired performance from Norwich ‘keeper John Ruddy prevent him from getting on the score sheet against Norwich The Uruguayan striker is surely due a change in fortunes, as he has now had 36 attempts returning just 4 goals. Suarez has got 67% of those attempts on target, and is second only to Robin van Persie in both overall attempts and efforts on target.
