Leeds: Smyth drops Poveda update

Graham Smyth has dropped an update on the future of Leeds United winger Ian Poveda.

What’s the latest?

In a recent article for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Smyth revealed that the 22-year-old, who had returned to Thorp Arch from his season-long loan deal at Blackburn Rovers as a result of an ankle injury sustained last November, is now set to return to the Championship side on a trial basis this week.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

The journalist goes on to state that Tony Mowbray will then decide whether or not he would like the former England U20 international to rejoin his first-team squad for the remainder of the second-tier campaign – with Rovers still being in with a shot of securing a top-six finish in the league.

Raphinha replacement

While it is true that, after making 16 first-team appearances in 2020/21, Poveda has not progressed as many at Elland Road would have hoped this season – something that is largely down to his long-term injury – the youngster would nevertheless still appear to have a bright future with the Premier League side.

Indeed, despite Paul Robinson’s recent claim that the 22-year-old’s future at Leeds is “up in the air” at present, Victor Orta’s comments at the time of the winger’s loan switch to Ewood Park would appear to suggest otherwise.

Regarding the forward, the Spanish sporting director said: “We feel Ian can make an impact here in the future and we’ve been very impressed with how Blackburn have developed players such as Harvey Elliott at Liverpool. We hope Ian can get some game time and come back to us next season ready to fight.”

And, while it is undeniable that the £11k-per-week talent – who Robinson also dubbed an “exciting” player – initially struggled to find his feet at Blackburn, his performance in the fixture before he sustained his injury against fellow play-off hopefuls Sheffield United proved that the former Manchester City starlet is a “wonderful talent” – as Mowbray claimed.

Indeed, in Rovers’ 3-1 victory over the Blades, Poveda turned in a man of the match display, scoring one goal and registering one assist, as well as making two key passes, creating one big chance, completing five dribbles and winning eight duels – with these returns seeing the forward earn an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 8.5 – the best of any player to feature in the match.

As such, should the £1.8m-rated prodigy be able to refind this level of form upon his return to Blackburn over the remainder of the season, it would appear highly advisable for Jesse Marsch to consider reinstating the 22-year-old in his first-team squad ahead of the club’s 2022/23 campaign.

Indeed, with Raphinha being heavily linked with a £60m move away from Elland Road this summer, should Poveda go on to fulfil his undoubted potential next season, the Englishman could well go on to become the Whites’ next wide attacking sensation – potentially even turning into a player who is just as important to the club as the Brazilain currently is.

Spurs: Officials to watch Elmali and Yilmaz

According to a report from Ajanspor journalist Salim Manav, Tottenham Hotspur are set to scout two Turkish talents in the upcoming round of Super Lig fixtures.

The lowdown: Targets collide

It will be a mid-table battle when Besiktas face Kasimpasa on Monday night (April 25), but there could be a sub-plot to proceedings as two opposing left-backs – Ridvan Yilmaz and Eren Elmali – vie for superiority on the night.

Yilmaz of Besiktas is the younger of the two at 20-years-old and has already represented Turkey at the senior international level, whilst 21-year-old Elmali remains an Under 21 representative.

As they prepare to do battle, it’s been suggested that eyes from the Premier League and Serie A could be watching with intent…

The latest: Spurs send scouts

As per the report from Ajanspor which has been cited on Twitter by Manav, Tottenham and Atalanta are believed to be preparing to watch the Turkish top-flight encounter.

“Tottenham and Atalanta officials will watch Eren Elmali and Ridvan Yilmaz in the Beşiktaş-Kasımpaşa match,” the journalist tweeted.

Expanding in the article, it’s claimed Spurs officials ‘will report’ on both Yilmaz and Elmali as Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici begin to earmark potential summer transfer targets.

Yilmaz – who made a come-and-get-me plea to Arsenal in 2021 – has been capped six times by the Turkey national team and was previously given a reported £8.35million asking price amidst interest from Leicester City, Torino and VfB Stuttgart.

The verdict: Smart moveWhilst neither youngster can boast a plethora of top-level experience with a combined 124 career outings in the Super Lig, both would represent value for money given the respective ages and likely affordable transfer fees.Elmali holds a perceived market value of just £1.62million (Transfermarkt), making the Istanbul-born starlet the more attainable financial option compared to his compatriot. But, with three goals and four assists in 30 appearances this season, Yilmaz’s ability to play as both a conventional left-back and in a more advanced role makes the Besiktas ace a preferable choice to suit Conte’s chosen 3-4-3 formation at present. When comparing the youngster to current Lilywhites star Sergio Reguilon, Yilmaz actually outperforms the Spaniard in every available aspect on average per 90 minutes (Fbref), albeit in a weaker league.Described as a ‘very smart’ operator by national team manager Stefan Kuntz, early indications would point to the Besiktas starlet being the preferred option to arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer. In other news: ‘That’s for sure’ – Sky Sports reporter backs big transfer news out of Tottenham, find out more here.

Wolves could find Jimenez upgrade in Origi

Bruno Lage could land a massive upgrade for Raul Jimenez as he aims to rebuild the spine of the Wolves side ahead of next season.

What’s the word?

Liverpool striker Divock Origi is out of contract at the end of the season and journalist Josh Holland believes Wolves should sign the player to boost the side for next season.

The journalist said: “I think he’s better than Jimenez. If they can bring Origi in and have him starting as their number nine going forward, I think that would be perfect.

“I think he is quality and has an eye for goal. He is always in the right place at the right time.”

Italian outlet Calciomercato have reported that AC Milan appears to be the frontrunner for the Belgian’s signature, but Wolves should also consider a move having been linked previously.

Whilst on £82k-per-week at Liverpool, there may be some room for negotiation and the likelihood is he will get more game time at the club compared to Klopp’s side, with Wolves having held an interest in Origi for a while now, a move could materialise during the summer.

Jimenez upgrade at Wolves

Origi is a man for big moments, think back to the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in 2019 and even the final against Tottenham where he secured the trophy for Liverpool.

Holland has said that Origi “would be perfect” and believes he is better than Jimenez. The club has only scored 35 times in the Premier League this season, with the Mexican – the side’s main striker – grabbing only six of them, it clearly shows where the problem lies.

With Klopp dubbing him a “monster” before a Champions League tie against AC Milan last year, then Lage could well be getting themselves a player who could solve their goalscoring woes.

Origi has scored 68 matches in that time.

Another advantage is he has time on his side, he just turned 27 in April and could arguably be said, is still to hit his peak.

Lage needs to build a solid spine to the Wolves team ahead of next season in order to achieve European qualification and Origi must be a key target as the transfer window looms.

Ponting's men brace for first real challenge

Only after Saturday’s match against Sri Lanka, one of the pre-tournament favourites, will we really know how Ricky Ponting’s men are placed in their quest for a fourth consecutive title

Brydon Coverdale in Colombo04-Mar-2011The World Cup is two weeks old, but Australia’s challenge is yet to really begin. Only after Saturday’s match against Sri Lanka, one of the pre-tournament favourites, will we really know how Ricky Ponting’s men are placed in their quest for a fourth consecutive title. Only after they have faced down Lasith Malinga, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis on home soil will the full picture begin to emerge. The points table says Australia have won two from two, and they’ve played 31 World Cup matches since their last defeat. In the light of Ireland’s triumph over England, Australia’s wins over Zimbabwe and an out-of-form New Zealand shouldn’t be ignored, but nor did they reveal anything new about Ponting’s outfit. The Tait-Lee-Johnson triumvirate are a handful for weaker batting orders, Shane Watson makes solid half-centuries, and quality spin can slow the Australians down. No surprises there. The two warm-ups were more instructive, coming as they did against the two favourites to win the World Cup. Australia were beaten by India and then crushed by South Africa, and in that company Zimbabwe and New Zealand look rather irrelevant. Ponting knows this clash with Sri Lanka, finalists at the previous World Cup and a team that triumphed down under earlier this season, is the big one, at least until the quarter-finals.”It’s a little bit hard to judge in the first two games, we really haven’t been pushed too much in the first two games,” Ponting said. “The Zimbabwe game was obviously a very easy win for us and then to bowl New Zealand out the way we did and then pick the runs off pretty easily, we weren’t really tested in that game either. It’s not so much what we’ve done in the games that I’m happy with, it’s just the way we’ve approached every session so far.”Can Cameron break the shackles in the middle overs agaist a top-class spin attack?•Getty ImagesSeven days in Colombo has given them plenty of time to work in and, importantly, acclimatise to a more muggy heat than they experienced in India. It’s seven years since the Australians have been to Sri Lanka, and although five members of the squad have played internationals there – Ponting, Watson, Lee, Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin – much has changed since then. That includes the Premadasa Stadium, which has undergone a major redevelopment, and Ponting doesn’t expect the pitch to turn as much as the Australians had originally anticipated. All the same, Ray Price and his Zimbabwe colleagues showed that facing spin is not a strength of the Australian batsmen on the subcontinent. Muralitharan, at a ground where he’s taken 107 international wickets, won’t be any easier to handle, and nor will the mystery-man Mendis. It’s in those middle overs against the spinners that Cameron White needs to stand up. The selectors have been impressed with White over the past year and gave him the captaincy for the final ODI against England last month, but this summer he’s been scratchy as an old record. In the past, teams had watched White walk to the crease at No. 5 and feared his fireworks; now they see a man they can manacle to the crease. And if it’s not the slow bowlers who keep White and the middle order in check, it could be Malinga. His hat-trick and six-wicket haul against Kenya was a timely reminder that Tait isn’t the only source of slingy missiles in the tournament.”We’ve played a fair bit against Malinga over the years,” Ponting said. “He had a great game the other day against Kenya, and he looks like he’s in pretty good form. He was one of the main focuses for us in the team meeting, talking about the right way to go about playing him. His bowling in the middle overs and with the older ball is particularly good.”There’s also a question over Australia’s spinners. Ponting has been talking up Jason Krejza’s efforts on the tour, but even against an otherwise wobbly New Zealand, he leaked a few too many runs, while Steven Smith faces a major battle against quality batsmen like Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. It all adds up to an intriguing tussle, and Australia’s first serious contest of the tournament. If Ponting’s men come through with flying colours, they can justifiably be talked about among the favourites. If not, at least they’ll know where they stand.

Anderson and Kieswetter to miss Twenty20s

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jan-2011James Anderson is set to fly back to England for the second time in a month, after the England management decided to rest him from both Twenty20 internationals and the first three of England’s seven-match ODI series against Australia that gets underway next week.Anderson has been the spearhead of England’s successful Ashes campaign, claiming 24 wickets at 26.04 to set his side up for their first series win in Australia for 24 years. He claimed four-wicket hauls in the first innings of both innings victories at Adelaide and Melbourne, as well as at Sydney, where England wrapped up another triumph. He flew home for a week between the second and third Tests in mid-December to attend the birth of his second daughter, and the management have decided that it is in the team’s best interests to give him a further chance to spend time at home before the second half of their winter campaign gets underway.”James Anderson will be returning to the UK for a complete break from cricket for ten days,” said England’s coach, Andy Flower. “He has had a heavy workload so far this winter, playing in all five Tests and we feel that he will benefit from a short rest period to ensure that he is fresh for the second half of the Australia ODI series and the World Cup which follows shortly after.”Anderson will leave for the UK on January 8 and will return to Australia on January 22 ahead of the fourth ODI in Adelaide on January 26. Steven Finn will remain with the England squad in Anderson’s absence before joining the England Lions tour of the West Indies.Meanwhile Craig Kieswetter has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series due to an abscess and will undergo minor surgery. Kieswetter’s last match against Australia was the World Twenty20 final in Barbados, in which he won the Man of the Match award for a hard-hitting half-century. He has been replaced by his opening partner in that game, Michael Lumb, who is currently playing for Queensland Bulls.”It is unfortunate that Craig has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series,” said England’s national selector, Geoff Miller, “but having performed well during his time with the England Performance Programme this winter he will have an opportunity to make a full recovery and then continue to push for further international honours when he tours with England Lions later this month.”Michael Lumb has already demonstrated his ability in Twenty20 cricket and it is good to have him back playing cricket again after a long term injury. We are delighted to be able to call a player of his calibre into the squad.”

Malinga returns to Test squad

Sri Lanka have not included spinner Ajantha Mendis in the squad for the three-Test series against India which begins in Galle on July 18

Sa'adi Thawfeeq09-Jul-2010Fast bowler Lasith Malinga has been named in the 16-member Sri Lanka squad for the three-Test series against India beginning on July 18, setting him up for a return to Tests after two-and-a-half years . However, there was no place for spinner Ajantha Mendis, who tormented India during their previous Test visit two years ago.Malinga played his last Test against England at Galle in 2007 before a knee injury laid him low and forced him out of cricket for nine months. Malinga was cured by Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse’s personal physician Dr Eliyantha White and since then his appearances for his country has been only in limited-over internationals and in Twenty20 Internationals.Malinga’s return to Test cricket was slow because the team physio did not want to push him too early to play in the longer version of the game. However selection committee sources stated that they had got the greenlight from physio Tommy Simsek who has been monitoring Malinga’s progress carefully that he was now fully fit to play in a five-day Test match.”Malinga has nine more days before the first Test against India and we are confident he will be fit to play. He has been bowling long spells at the nets and has shown no side effects,” a selection committee source said. Since making his Test debut against Australia at Darwin in 2004, Malinga has played in 28 Tests and captured 91 wickets. The other members of the fast-bowling department are Dilhara Fernando, Chanaka Welegedara and Dammika Prasad.Offspinner Muttiah Muralitharan who is due to retire at the end of Galle Test has also been named in the squad along with left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and young off-spinner Suraj Randiv who is likely to take Muralitharan’s place for the rest of the series. Mendis, who became a star with 26 wickets in three Tests against India when they visited in 2008, was left out.The Sri Lanka Board President’s team to take on India in a three-day practice match ahead of the Tests was also named. Thilan Samaraweera will lead the side which includes first-choice Test keeper Prasanna Jayawardene and promising batsmen Lahiru Thirimanne, Ashan Priyanjan and Dinesh Chandimal.Test squad: Kumar Sangakkara (capt), Muttiah Muralitharan (vc), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Tharanga Paranavitana, Mahela Jayawardene, Thilan Samaraweera, Angelo Mathews, Prasanna Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga, Rangana Herath, Dilhara Fernando, Dammika Prasad, Suraj Randiv, Thilina Kandamby, Chanaka Welegedara, Lahiru Thirimanne.Sri Lanka Board President’s XI: Thilan Samaraweera (capt), Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thilina Kandamby, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Ashan Priyanjana, Kaushal Silva, Chanaka Welegedara, Dilhara Fernando, Chaminda Vidanapathirana, Sachitra Senanayake, Ajantha Mendis, Nuwan Pradeep, Kusal Janith, Dinesh Chandimal

Flower appeals for fans to stay with series

England’s coach, Andy Flower, has appealed to the British public to get involved in the forthcoming one-day series despite the ongoing allegations involving Pakistan’s cricketers

Andrew Miller at Cardiff08-Sep-2010England’s coach, Andy Flower, has appealed to the British public to get involved in the forthcoming one-day series despite the ongoing allegations involving Pakistan’s cricketers, after their six-wicket victory in Tuesday’s second Twenty20 at Sophia Gardens was marred by one of the poorest attendances ever seen for a home international.Only 5,821 tickets were sold for second match in three days in Cardiff, which is barely a third of the ground’s 15,000 capacity. The midweek scheduling didn’t help the ticket sales, nor did the autumnal weather, but the sense of anticlimax was exacerbated by Pakistan’s collapse to 89 all out, their lowest total in 40 Twenty20 internationals.”It was a strange atmosphere,” admitted Flower. “That must be the smallest crowd I’ve ever been involved in with an England team in England [sic]. It’s a real pity. Perhaps the weather didn’t help on Tuesday but no-one wants our national side to play in front of such a small crowd. And the fact that we dominated so completely meant that it wasn’t a great contest for the people who did come either. It was great for us to dominate but not a brilliant match for the crowd.”This time last year, England were being thrashed 6-1 in a dreadfully received seven-match one-day series that took place only days after the completion of the Ashes, and though England are the side in the ascendancy on this occasion, their opponents are in such disarray that a similarly one-sided conclusion to the summer would appear to be on the cards.”There’s inevitably a bit of a gloomy atmosphere at the moment, and with the sullying of cricket’s name and reputation that’s understandable,” said Flower. “It’s a pity because we are playing some outstanding cricket. We have got on with our jobs in a professional manner. We have won two games comfortably and for the skills of the bowlers in particular to be overshadowed so completely is sad.”It’s fair to say it was the same in the Test series too,” he added. “Not just at Lord’s but throughout there were some great performances, like Trott and Broad’s partnership and some others, but they have been overshadowed by controversy. I’m sure the players have some strong views on the issues the game is facing but they have gone about their work and put those issues to the back of their minds, and that’s a tribute to them.”In the aftermath of Tuesday’s second match, England’s Twenty20 captain Paul Collingwood reminded the ECB that he and his fellow international cricketers had been warning of the dangers of overkill for the past ten years. It was a stance that Flower appeared to back in a thinly veiled criticism of the scheduling.”To have two Twenty20 games at the same venue at this stage of the season might have been an error,” he said. “It’s something the ECB might want to look at. None of us want to see small crowds but we don’t know what the attendances will be like at the one-dayers yet. Hopefully the English cricketing public will come and support their team. We’re playing some good cricket and I think our ground-fielding and bowling in the Twenty20 matches provided really good entertainment. We all hope people turn up in great numbers for the last five matches.”He denied, however, that his players were just longing for the summer to come to an end. “The guys are really looking forward to the one-day series,” he said. “They love playing for England and they are highly motivated and proud to represent their country. All the other stuff that is being alleged I think has highlighted our guys’ appreciation of representing their country in a fair and proud manner. Sometimes you can forget simple things like that and I think this business has emphasised to them how proud they are and the responsibilities they face.”Pakistan, meanwhile, face a struggle to raise their game despite the furore that is surrounding them, but Flower insisted that that was not his team’s concern. “That’s a situation that we can’t do too much about at the moment,” he said. “The bottom line for spectators is that they want to be entertained and whatever problems Pakistan have, they will play attacking cricket as we will too. So I’m very hopeful some good cricket will be played in the 50-over games.”

Rangers handed John Lundstram lift

Rangers have been handed a fresh injury lift over John Lundstram…

What’s the latest?

Gio van Bronckhorst has revealed that the Gers midfielder trained on Friday and is set to be back in action in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Lundstram was taken off in the first half on Sunday in the Premiership as he struggled with a knock, but he has now recovered from that in time to be in contention to play in the European quarter-final second leg clash against Braga.

Speaking on Wednesday morning, the Dutchman said: “Lundstram is training today so hopefully available for tomorrow.”

Van Bronckhorst will be elated

This update will surely leave the Gers head coach feeling elated, as having Lundstram available will be a huge boost to his team.

The ex-Feyenoord boss may have been fearing the worst when the midfielder was forced off the pitch in the 26th minute against St Mirren on Sunday. Steven Davis was pressed into action in the first half of the 4-0 win and the Rangers chief may not have been expecting Lundstram to be back in action quite so soon.

The 28-year-old’s participation in training on Friday suggests that he is fit enough to feature against Braga, which will delight Van Bronckhorst as Lundstram’s recent form has shown that he is a key player for the club, particularly in Europe.

In the Europa League this season, only four other outfield players have averaged a higher SofaScore rating than the ex-Sheffield United man – Alfredo Morelos, Leon Balogun, Ryan Kent and James Tavernier.

He has averaged an impressive score of 6.97 in the competition across 10 appearances. In those matches, he has won 60% of his duels and made 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game, which shows that he has provided a solid defensive base to allow the attackers to go about their business in the final third.

In the Premiership, he has averaged a score of 6.88 across 25 appearances, starting 16 games. He has completed 90% of his attempted passes whilst making 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game, which shows that he has been consistently delivering solid performances domestically and in Europe throughout the campaign.

Therefore, Van Bronckhorst will be eager to be able to name him in the starting XI against Braga at Ibrox on Thursday night. The English midfielder has shown that he is built for the big occasion, netting a stunning goal against Borussia Dortmund, and the statistics suggest that he can have a big say in this upcoming quarter-final match-up.

Newcastle: Luke Edwards drops Bakker update

Newcastle United have been dealt a knockout blow in their bid to bring Mitchel Bakker to St James’ Park in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Luke Edwards, with The Telegraph journalist revealing on Twitter that the Magpies’ hopes of securing a deal to sign the Bayer Leverkusen left-back this month are all but over.

Previous reports had suggested that PIF were in talks with the Bundesliga side regarding a £16m deal for the Netherlands under-21 international, with Leverkusen reportedly open to parting with the 21-year-old this month as long as they could find a replacement for the defender.

However, in his tweet, Edwards said: “Mitchel Bakker deal is off.”

Fans will be livid

Considering just how much potential Bakker quite clearly possesses, the news that Newcastle’s move for the left-back now appears dead in the water is sure to have left the St James’ Park faithful fuming.

Indeed, over his 13 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, the £9m-rated defender has helped his side to keep two clean sheets, in addition to making one interception, 1.3 tackles and 1.9 clearances and winning 4.2 duels per game.

However, it is in an attacking capacity in which the 21-year-old has impressed most in the current campaign. He has scored one goal, registered three assists and created two big chances for his team-mates in 2021/22, as well as taking 0.6 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

As such, it is clear to see that the 21-year-old would have made an exceptional addition to Eddie Howe’s current options on the left-hand side of his Newcastle backline. However, following Edwards’ latest update, it would now appear that the chances of the Magpies landing Bakker over what remains of the January transfer window are slim to none – an outcome which will undoubtedly leave the Toon Army and their 44-year-old manager feeling gutted.
